Maybe not just for weight reduction but consider handling. I think removing it could lower the center of gravity quite a bit. Look at the numbers on the aluminum roof evo. Reduced weight is 8.8 lbs, center of gravity is moved 3 mm or the equivalent of lowering the steel roof 50 mm (~2 inches).

If you want weight reduction tips, PM @Code Monkey; his 6 is stripped and caged.

As far as removing the sunroof, I'd try to find a metal shop that can build a custom plug.

http://www.lighterfaster.com/index2.html

Here is a company that makes carbon fiber ones for Hondas. Not sure if the fit is similar but I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

thank you for the input, but i think you might have missed it, i like the sunroof but i dont care if it opens, id rather save the weight id like something like that carbon fiber but in lexan

so i can have the sunroof for the light and the fact that its kinda cool and keeps the stock look but not have the 50 pounds it adds to the worst part of the car

i think this reduction along with maybe (illegal) lexan glass, carbon fiber hood and trunk
(which i have sitting around) and some really light seats could drop about 150-225 even with out the lexan glass i think 125-150 pounds off the car is a safe bet, all from practially unnoticeable places all from pretty high points dramatically increasing handling, my goal is to keep the car looking like a street car(because it is) i dont want a gutted caged track car

reductions that would lower center of gravity in order from most effective to least

sunroof delete
carbon fiber roof skin
lexan windows
carbonfiber hood/trunk
racing seats/ remove rear seats ( which i would never do)

these items are all the the top half of the car also many of these items sit over the front half of the car which we can all agree will help this heavy ass bitch handle much better

anyone know the weight dist on the 6/3? or both, stock

anyone know if a good rear crash bar replacement or if removing this is safe/matters, i already learned a shit ton and got super flamed for asking about the front in a different post lol

cheers!

Honestly removing my girlfriend was the best weight savings I've done in a while. Car is quieter, too, with less droning.

Not sure any of this will ever be useful but I love data so while I tore my engine apart I weighed everything (on my super accurate bathroom scale)

Crank: 45lbs
Oil Pan: 11.6lbs
Bare short block: 60lbs
Both cams w/timing gears 11.4lbs
1st gen valve cover: 7.4 lbs
Complete head (minus cams and VC): 35lbs

Just pulled the front apart so here's two more data points:

front crash bar -- 20.8 lbs
a/c compressor -- 13.4 lbs
alternator -- 15.0 lbs

This makes the whole a/c system (compressor, condenser, refrigerant lines, shit inside the cabin) a measly 38.2 lbs, maybe 39 lbs if you add random brackets and bolts.

Moved the question here so it will be easy to search in the future.

Biggest weight reducers (approximate weights):

Rear seats + belts, 65 lbs
Trunk spare etc, 53
Front seats, 45
a/c + heater, 39
Dashboard, 22
Battery, 22
------------
Total 246

After that you have to chip away at smaller stuff but it adds up quick to a substantive number, you have another 250 lbs there.
Downmented and MZRSPEED like this.

@qtrmile beast; what does your interior look like on a regular day? Do you roll around with a full interior or a semi-stripped?

I daily mine and this is what mine looks like.

I still have he regular seat belt hooked up. The noise is definitely intensified especially with all 3 motor mounts in the highest duro, however I got used to it.

I have yet to get on an actual scale, (Just been too busy, maybe after the holidays) however assuming the individual weights in this thread are correct, and adjusting on the safe side... The cars weight should at the very least be 3320 without me in it. Still a heavy car. doesn't really make THAT much of a difference but I guess every little bit helps?

@Code Monkey;, do you happen to know steering wheel weight or how much you saved going to a different one? I see airbag weight, but not wheel weight. Thanks!

I don't think I had it weighed. Aftermarket steering wheels are pretty sturdy though, I doubt you will have any weight savings.

@Jh8909; @qtrmile beast; @Code Monkey;. Are you guys running chrome Moley or mild steel cages? I was planning to turn my ms6 into my next track car, but the weight has me a little iffy. With my low 400s hp build I'd need to get this slug closer to 2800 to be worth the investment.

What kind of racing are you doing? My cage is 1.75" DOM with .120 wall tubing, most likely mild steel. You can see my cage build process here. For road racing I am about 300 whp and wtq and this is plenty of power.

HPDE and private track events. Im usually on the track with 458 challenge cars, vipers, mclarens, and other gt3 level cars so I need something at or above a t1 setup corvette ratio otherwise I just get run over all day, which is the problem in my current car(abarth challenge car 250whp/2100lbs)

We estimated the weight of my cage at 170 lbs IIRC, the cage is a bit overbuilt, so I can see it being 150 lbs if needed. Chromoly is like 25% lighter, I think, so you could have a cage that is closer to 110 lbs. Still, I do not see how you plan on dropping the weight to 2,800 lbs, you would have to remove all the windows except the windscreen go get under 3,000 lbs, maybe 2,900 lbs.

My car now sits at 3,156 lbs, no driver, no fuel, so:

Code:
3,156
- 15 BSD
- 60 lighter cage
- 30 passenger seat + harness
- 10 misc
3,041
- ? windows
- ? fuel cell

What about swapping the OE aluminum intake manifold for the FoST mani? I suspect that might save a few pounds, as the OE mani is pretty heavy.

With the mani adapter and extra fueling running low 400 hp I guess the total weight will be close to the stock IM.

If the car does stay below 3,000 lbs, the cage wall tubing can be .095" instead of the required .120" wall tubing for cars over 3,000 lbs, this should shave off another few lbs.

That may well be, but I don't think that aux fueling is a requirement for the FoST mani, so one could save a few pounds there too.
