(Thread Starter) | Neutral : +1 score I used a dei 8616 relay, it's very small, and can be found for less than $10. Just about any 1~3 amp diode will work just fine.. Red Connects to green/black at the vacume solenoid(86) Black Connects to black/red at the vacume soleniod(85) Brown No connection(87) Orange Connects to a wire at the plunger(87a) Yellow Connects to a wire at the plunger (30) It's basically a starter kill relay with the triggers connected to the vacume soleniod and the contacts connected the to the plunger(the polarity doesn't matter here, just cut the plug off the pluger and wire it up). I used a DEI 8616 relay(because it's small), and a diode I had laying around. You could probably just go down to a stereo shop and buy a starter kill relay, the wire colors might be different, but it will still work.. Wire it up and you can completly remove the VTCS solenoid, vacume reservoir and the plunger, and you wont throw any codes. Just make sure to plug the extra vacume ports.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score When you remove the complete VTCS system you can throw two codes..IIRC you will get P2006 VTCS shutter valve stuck closed, and you might get VTCS P2009 variable swirl soleniod valve control circuit low. The relays coil being wired in elimiates P2009, and the connections to the pluger mimic the action of the switch on the pluger getting rid of the P2006. The computer thinks everything is there so it doesn't throw any codes..

| Not Ranked : 0 score HAHA sorry to be picking your brain here but I was also checking the wiring for this trick on the Sped 3. Just to be clear the "vac solenoid" is on the black plastic box between the #2 and #3 runners. Then the "plunger" is the cylindrical thing under the gray plastic dohicky on the trans side of the intake manifold. The plunger has 2 wires and goes to a gray connector on the opposite side of the gray plastic do hicky. The 3's wire colors match what the 6 has on the vac solenoid so this write up should work on both cars then. I will try it before I take off the manifold and gut it just incase though. |

That plunger needs to move when the VTCS is actuated, if it doesn't the ECM thinks the flaps are stuck...and throws the DTC P2006 (variable swirl shutter valve stuck closed). I checked into this last year for whoosh.. The EGR has 4 differnt modes of operation, and must return the corresponding proper voltage change to the ECM when each is activated. The problem is that the EGR test is done by the computer using the dealer scan tool and the neither the service manual nor the electrical manual list the specific voltage changes that should occur. That's not a huge issue as long as you are willing to leave the EGR itself in place and connected. The real issue is that the ECM actually monitors the MAP to insure the EGR system is flowing enough exhaust--there is no mention in either service manual of the voltage change that should occur when the egr is active. Even if there was it would be overly complicated to simulate the 4 difffernt modes of the egr operation while not influencing the MAP output at other times--even the resistance of a simple relay could effect the map ouput during normal driving. This is a problem that will need to be solved in the ECM itself. Luckily I've been talking back a forth with Jordan at CP-E about thsi for a while now and they are very close to being able to delete these specific MIl's from the ECM firmware...

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Once the manifold is off it's easy to see what needs to be done, that's probably why there isn't a step by step how to. Just remove the actual flappers, and either leave the rod, or remove the rod completely and have the hole welded shut.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Because then I will be up to 4 not ready when I go in for testing. I am not sure if that test in my state only looks at emmsions items or the over all system. If it's the over all system I would fail the test big time which is why I want to solve it this way.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Don't see why the dei 8616 you link to would be different than the one the OP posted. I assume you don't have a way or don't want to install the oem actuator? |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Any pictures of what this looks like? The white plastic part broke near the plunger so I'll have to wire this in to eliminate cel and pass smog in Ca.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I did figure it out. The part that confused me was on the plunger. The plunger has a green and a black wire. I don't remember which one I connected to which, but it worked and CEL went away. I can confirm tonight if you need me too. Orange Connects to a wire at the plunger(87a) Yellow Connects to a wire at the plunger (30)
