Weird issue with Steering Wheel
 

So. 07 Gen 1. I'm trying to sort out this odd thing with my steering. It's hard to describe. It's like all of a sudden when I turn the wheel it feels "loose". Not loose like the actual steering wheel is loose. But it's like I have to turn the wheel further to get the same amount of turn? Or when I come out of a turn, the steering wheel is still turned a bit, but the wheels are straight?

No power steering pump whine. No, it's not hard to turn the wheel. The rack & pinion has not been touched. The only thing that's been done is I had the OEM shocks / struts replaced with Koni Reds and I left the stock springs. New end links and bushing in the rear. New Moog Sway bar links in the front. Other than that, stock down to the wheels. But all that was done last summer. This is a new issue.

I had a mechanic put it up on a lift to check it out. He saw nothing. He told me I needed an alignment. The same ish is happening after it was aligned. Nothing visibly broken, that I can see with it on the ground. I do have the front end clunk though. Front sway bar bushings going in soon. What else am I missing?

If you installed new front struts, did you also replace the stock strut bearings and top hats that go between the strut and the top of the strut tower? That is a must.

If you don’t, you’ll get front end clunk and, if they move enough due to wear that might account for the imprecise steering.

And, there are slots up top to make small but important camber adjustments. To maintain camber, the tabs, slots and outside circumference of the bolts should be witness marked before starting so the top of the strut is realigned with those marks when it is put back together.

Notice how I used a small center punch to put witness marks around the three bolts and the index tabs so they could be put back in the exact same place.

@MSMS3 thanks for the tips. But I did replace the mounts and the bushings. I actually bought those before I bought the reds. But you make a good point. I'm going to go double-check to see it things are ok up top.
