Let us know what you will found, i have no idea because everything associated to the lower compression would probably affect it at all RPM not just at low range...

The only time i had a low rpm issue it was because my wastegate actuator wasn't adjusted tight enough and was probably opening all the time a little bit when hot under gaz pressure...But it was with a GT28 and adjustable WG rod...So i don't think it is your case

I am 99% certain my problem is another bad torque converter. Not the low compression.
I am going to open the old one up with the angle grinder and take a look.

At the end of the fall last year, I cracked my stock manifold after a hard 2nd-3rd shift, and then power just went to shit. But it didn't sound like there was a crack at all, I think mainly because it was on the top-side under the heat shield. Fuel trims were spot on, no weird AFR, car idled fine. It just refused to make any boost until like 5500rpms, so it was really slow. I didn't find the cause until I checked everything I could think of. Ended up pulling off the heat shield while the car was idling, and then I finally felt the exhaust coming out in the flex piece on the manifold.

Far as i can tell, only the torque converter matches your low rpm symptoms. It's a shame there aren't aftermarket options to choose from.

Yup. I also think the symptoms can only mean crap torque converter.
Car makes boost just fine. Tiny penis terboh gets to 9 psi by 2K rpm.
Is it possible to fry a torque converter if you drive with low oil for say 5 miles?

You should really install Versatuner and log some bit

I dont know about other CX-7, but mine had a weird hesitation on take off (k04 turbo)...rpm rised quickly to 2500, then there was that hesitation , then it took off at 3000rpm (see Versatuner graph in attachment : red line is load, brown line is rpm, purple line is timing and light purple is throttle position)

The hesitation may be related to the engine stall speed (see page 5-50-1 of the CX-7 workshop manual)

Its been a while and I didnt keep my log, but more ignition timing and VVT improved the response

The torque converter has been sliced open.
I am 99% sure the fins on the pump (1st pic) are not supposed to be bent like that. They show no wear marks however so I would say they were bent with oil pressure alone. It does not appear the pump blades had contact wit the stator (2nd pic) as that funny profile doesn't really show any rubbing marks. The profile toward the outer edge of the blades seems to be cast on purpose. I can't see how the two could touch since they are separated by a thrust bearing although the hub of the pump shows some discoloration. Could be from welding though. Meh.
How the fuck those fins get bent from a lack of oil is still beyond my understanding of how torque converters work but I am getting there.

Fins on the turbine look ok.

IDK man, those fins are all bent uniformly and as you say, how could oil pressure bend them, so I think they are supposed to be that way.

are they bent that way as to let oil pass (not get pumped) thus creating the stall point?

so say a 5K RPM stall converter may have 1/2 as many fins so as to not pump fluid to the tranny planetary gear clutches and lock them until it approaches 5Kish?

OEMs bend the fins to achieve a smoother transition?

BTW, i have zero knowledge in this area just attempting to think logically.

At 3:55 "the fins are bent to exact specifications to set the stall range"

so there you have it. they are supposed to be bent. no idea why you POS is...well acting like a POS.

don't worry about and go out and drive the racecar(s)

Dano,

Of course the fins are bent to a specified angle. Usually called the stagger angle. The fins normaly have straight leading edges however. Not curved ones like you see in pic 1. The edges should look like in pic 3.
Like I said, not 100% sure but 99% sure those fins aren't supposed to look that way.

I see what you're saying but at the same time I can't see them getting bent.

I guess it's time to Google "burnd up TQ converter" , to see what to expect.

@torquemaniac; @Ozynigma;

This is on clearance by Rotora.
$2400 for the the set up. You can get it in 380mm or 355mm front rotors.
Rear is 355mm also and it keeps the factory parking brake.
Let's be honest this is total overkill and not needed. But goddamnit its fucking awesome. Please get it so I don't have to. If someone wants it please let me know. I'll get you linked with Loren at Rotora. Otherwise I'll go for it even if its not worth installing in my turd CX7.
I have nothing to do with Rotora and zero experience with their kits. This BBK may be total shit. No idea.

Looks awesome. My slotted CX9 rotors are stopping me just fine.
Before I modded my son took my car to a driver training day.
Even with stock brakes and 235 tyres my car stopped shortest in the emergency brake exercise.
