How To Actually Disable Traction Control (with pics)

First off, I take no responsibility if you cause harm to yourself. The Info is here, use it as you will.



So after everyone saying it cant be done i have figured out how to disable traction control.

Pros: I can chirp tires and slide the car around turns.
Cons: ABS Light is on, TCS Symbol is ON, Emergency Brake stays lit even when not engaged.
You will not have abs when you have your switch turned off.



Step 1. Open your fuse box. it looks like this

we are looking for the little black box on the left. here is another pic

step 2. you need to pull that box out. it takes some effort, but once it is out it is out. inside that box is the fuses for abs1 abs 2 and tcs. please take them out of the box. here are some pics of the box once it has been removed and fuses have been taken out.

here is what all the fuses look like when the box is taken out and they are in there fuse holders

step 3. re insert the 7.5 amp fuse and 40 amp fuse in there respective locations leaving the 20 amp fuse out

the prong on the right side is the one supplying power. the one on the left is a negative terminal.

step 4. install a switch and 20 amp inline fuse. the 20 amp inline fuse should be hooked to the right prong.

step 5. go drive and enjoy.

.now keep in mind this is not a perfect solution. and i used a very short switch i did not install in the cabin (yet) this was just a test to make sure it worked before i make a permanent installation.

you will have to turn on your switch and then restart the car to re-enable traction control and abs, and the proper function of the emergency brake light.

please use common sense when turning your tcs off.

dsc button doesnt turn off traction control permanently. it comes back on at 30mph

im disabling abs because it is the only way to also diasble the traction control. unless someone comes up with a software solution. the two systems are on the same fuse

im not neccesarrily going to be driving with it off 24/7. just on certain roads here in town where the traction control would otherwise hinder my fun.

its totally a cx-7 thing. the speed 3 and 6 have more hp. ours is tuned differently to give more low end torque and less hp to get the suv moving quickly off the line because it is so heavy.

And I know some of you are going to be saying why did I not buy a sports car. well, I owned 3 cars previous to this. I mazda6s 1st gen, srt-4 modified to 315 whp, and a 91 500sl. I was tired of tiny cars and wanted to try something sporty but bigger. The cx-7 is definitely way slower, but I appreciate how comfortable it is for long trips. and a spacious back seat also comes in handy

update: After driving with tcs off for about 100 miles, I have no check engine light and the smile on my face wont go away. So far I have not felt or seen any ill effects. I did a permanent install in the cabin via a switch. and after the car is off and the tcs is turned on. I do not have to go through the process of resetting tcs by turning the wheel.

I was looking for this since figured out that cannot be turned off.

Only bad thing at your setup is maybe switch- there are some high current since fuse is 20 amps so maybe 40 amps relay and small switch in cabin could do better for longer period of usage.
For others- this is not dangerous if you use it when it have sense. Do not use this on highway or other roads with good grip and high speeds or in rain if you do not know how to slide

Learn to drive. Haven't people driven cars without ABS before? There was a time cars didn't have ABS, nor any traction control, brake assist, nannies, etc... My first car had no electronic nannies, not even power windows, A/C or power steering. And I drove that FWD beater through 7 winters in Canada. To this day, I still have a habit of pumping my brakes, hard to undo the poor man's ABS reflex.

On place of your switch. And switch could remote open/close relay via smaller wires from cabin.
It could not be best if you take main wires into the cabin due to relative high possible current (20 Amps fuse).

Thank You Ro-Bi , I appreciate the help with the relay. I know my solution isn't perfect. I'm just hoping to get things moving in the right direction.

I did this mod for the mercedes benz forum as well. one of the aftermarket companies was trying to charge us $1000 for this mod when i figured it out for $5.00 lol

Also, what is up with all the guys complaining about abs being off. as Mikomi said. ABS hasn't been around forever. I miss my srt due to the fact that there was no traction control. I could just slide it and spin it if I wanted to.

This fix kinda reminds me of when I worked for a company in England that gave us a Vauxhall Corsa, GM's European equivalent of a Geo Metro, I think. We had a limited mileage allowance, so we looked for ways to drive the car without clocking mileage. We would pull the fuse on the speedometer. The trip- and odometers ran off the speedometer, or at least the same fuse, so that's all it took to disable them. I was shocked it was so simple to 'tamper' with the odometer, seemed like a major oversight.

I drove ro 25 years without ABS or traction control.
Still have my 70 Bug which has neither.

You can drive without it. But you cannot be a bad driver without it.

Same with new sport bikes. They nanny ware them so guys who lack to skill to ride them can buy them and maybe not die. But for those who can it interferes with our fun.

BTW if you do not understand these then just close your hood and go watch tv. This is in correspondence to the Fuses as seen when looking into the engine bay with the guide above. I am merely posing this to help with a more safe way of switching the system off and on.
The first one is a outside powered switch setup. Meaning the switch receives its power from say the battery. Not sure if it needs fused or not but do it to be safe.

The next one is a self powering system, It uses power from the relays line itself to power the switch. Also not entirely sure if this one is correct but i dont see why not, i will be running it by my mod buddy tomorrow.

UPDATE: ok i just built the relay self powering system today and installed it on my 2009 CX7 Touring and it works flawlessly. Now you dont have to stress about burning up a switch.

For those who can't understand why anyone would bypass the TCS, here is a very real problems with the CX7 version.
Since the CX7 is drive by wire, the TCS will essentially close the throttle if the slightest wheel spin is detected thus causing a very dangerous scenario when entering traffic or crossing a busy intersection. I have seen so many people report close calls thinking it was "turbo lag" when it was actually the TCS taking over the throttle. You romp on the gas pedal to get across the intersection before the next car approaches, the tires slip a little on the painted stripes then the TCS kills the engine as to stop the wheel spin (which is so slight) then has to recover when the so called slippage has ended. This process can take as much as a full second for each instance of spin. Now you are in the middle of the intersection with traffic barreling down on you and your fist instinct is to mash on the gas harder but nothing happens.
Traction control can be a very useful tool for safety sake but Mazda got this one so wrong. It's far more dangerous in my opinion because of the way it controls the throttle so aggressively, not to mention that this being a turbo charged engine, every time the TCS kicks in, you loose whatever boost has spooled up because it gets bypassed when the throttle closes. I have experienced this problem first hand and pushing the button at every stop is retarded.
In closing, there are better ways of invoking traction control other than killing the throttle but this probably was the easiest and least costly way to do it.
Oh yeah I almost forgot, I almost got stranded in some mud because the TCS would not allow the throttle to go beyond idle and the only way the car was going to move was to get some wheel spin.Then it dawned on me that I should try pushing the button... It worked! Since the vehicle speed seems to be read from the rear wheels, it allowed the drive wheels to spin freely at least till the vehicle got up to the speed threshold.
It may be possible to trick the computer into only seeing a speed less than 30mph while in TCS bypass. Just an idea.

and would this new installed switch (in diagram above) flipped in the off position, disable the stock TCS button?
