Picked up a turbo Miata yesterday. It was built and tuned by a guy down in Phoenix, AZ a couple years ago. Mods on it as follows....

Engine:
Built 1.6l
Greddy Turbo/Manifold
BEGI downpipe and full exhaust
Custom intercooler and piping
RX7 injectors
Megasquirt plug and play ECU tuned by UMS tuning 186 rwhp at 11 psi
LCI wideband 02 sensor
Koyo radiator

Suspension/Chassis:
NB miata hard S bilstein shocks
NB shock mounts
NB bumpstops
NB Shock tower brace
H&R springs
Flyin' Miata frame rail braces


Wheels/tires/brakes
NB big sport package brakes
Nearly new axxis metal master brake pads
Kosei K1 racing 15x7 wheels
Kumho XS 205/50/15 tires

Drivetrain
ACT Organic Clutch from FlyinMiata and 13.5 lb LW Flywheel
1.8 liter limited slip differential setup
1.8 halfshafts
Rebuilt shifter

I need to retune it due to the change of elevation from Phoenix to Clovis. Apparently its running on maf-less and off Speed Density (maybe?) and it's hard as fuck to get it started in cold temps.

My plans are to add a roll bar, coilovers, sways and get it running right to run in West Texas SCCA autocross events. I downloaded the MegaSquirt tuning software to clean up the tune, hopefully its not too hard.

I got the MegaSquirt software in an attempt to retune this thing for the altitude change...FUCK MY COUCH...the shit is so confusing, so I'm either gonna pay for a dyno tune or maybe someone can do a email tune. ATR has spoiled me, with how simple it is.

I decided that imma stay OEM motor wise, so now I'm searching for a 1.8 from the NB/NC model years, forged rods/pistons and stroke it to a 2.0 and run a GTX3071. Should be good for 350-400hp easily.

When you tune with the MS you have to fully understand how the engine works. PM me if you're interested, I can log in and tune the car remotely for you. I build these ECUs and I am very familiar with them.

That sounds like a plan. I currently have a small SR20 Turbo on mine making a bit over 200whp and about 190ft/lb. It is fun as hell. I am getting a block here this week to start building. I plan on putting a gtx2867 on there and shoot for about 300-350 to the wheels. I got dyno tuned. Nice car looks alot better than my 99.

Yea it's in great shape. I pretty much got it for a steal. It was bought by the guy I bought it from for $5k, 2 years ago. I got it for $3.5k. The turbo kit alone is worth $2k, then factor all the other goodies in....I got lucky.

Now I'm just waiting for Lex to tune this bitch...

I was dyno tuned by a guy here in virginia beach. He races them up at VIR. it is pretty conserative at 10 psi. I would love to get in and mess with the tuning but I just havent started and wanted to get it right for the turbo seeing I dont know anything about the tuning portion. I have messed around with ATR but as you said it is much diffrent.

It was on Craigslist but I saw it on the local FB forum page first, then turned out that the guy lives around the corner from me and we share a lot of mutual friends.

herro on here as well. I have DIYPNP/MS2- sounds like you got a MS1 but I'd be willing to help if you have any questions regarding tuning it. No idea if you followed my last build, but I made 275whp/250tq with a GT2560, stock 1.8 engine.

You're right about the stroker, just not worth it. Build a 1.8 on the side! It will come out to 1.9L, technically, even with a .5mm overbore

Yea I read through your build thread last night. Thats when I decided to build a 1.8 on the side. I'm just gonna have Lex tune it, the once the built 1.9 is complete have him tune it on a dyno.

If i where to every buy a dedicated road/AX car it would be a miata.
The pres of our club has a 1.8 with t25 turbo, thing fucking screams through the course. Still gets beat by a mz3 sedan, but that guy is just an insane driver.

I am kinda curious as to what could be transplanted from the MS3 to the new mx-5 that has the 2.0 MZR. if our mani fits on it, i could see a super cheap turbo kit for a new one. ms3 manifold, k04 or atp turbo, and custom downpipe

That's exactly why I wanted a miata. Perfect autox/road race car. In a good drivers hands it can rape at autox.

I've tossed around the idea of dropping the DISI in my miata. I believe the miatas trans could mount up.

You would have to fab up some custom motor mounts.
Thats why the new mx is so interesting to me, i would imagine they are the same block, just no DI and de stroked. I would almost stay away from DI in the miata because they make so much more stuff for them. If you could just transplant the turbo on to the 2.0MZR possibly even use the DISI crank to make it a 2.3 it would be a beast.

I have been trying to find out how similar the motors are and if any of this is possible but it seems no one has done much with the new miata yet

It's running good, the WOT AFR's were way outta wack, like 13.5 to 12.0. So I changed it to 11.5 and its been great ever since then. Planning on building a 1.8 later this year for next season. Parting out my MS3, so I can trade it in for a crewcab duelly diesel to tow the miata to the tracks.

Awesome. If you turn off EGO correction and acceleration enrichments and you run Autotune with a correct AFR target table it sets up the VE table pretty well. Then turn EGO and accel enrichment back on.

Very nice, clean engine bay and already on megasquirt! its a prototype PNP, is the CPU socketed on it? Drive it like you stole because at the price I think you did...

Its the 1st gen Megasquirt. Previous owner bought if from the guy that built it for $5k, 2 years ago and he barely drove/tracked it. So yea I did get it for a steal...lol
