BP's arent that strong unless ya build them. Even with a motor from an MSM which has a forged crank but nothing else. When you started getting to the 260-270+ mark is terriotory for zoom zoom boom because the rods are weak.

I think all 1.8s have a forged crank. The rods are the weak spot, but 250whp is already alot of power for most uses except drag racing. Even then, you'd want to deal with gearing issues first before adding even more power.

In the end, forged rods for BP are cheap, like $300 and change for either m-tuned or eagle rods. If you shop around, you can get a spare BP block for around that price, and build it at your leisure.

I still think fuel mgmt choice is more critical for making power in a mx5. There's no simple way out like a cobb ap.

I think ur right bout the 1.8s having forged. Its the msms tranny I was thinking of maybe, it was beefed up compared to all the others. The gearing on the msm kinda sucks which is why a lot of people switch to 3.63 gearing.

MSM trannies only have stronger synchro's and everyone who switches to a 3.63 is a moron if they have less then 250+ whp. 3.9 is the ticket on stock turbo. You will lose the incredible 4-6 highway roll acceleration that dropped jaws though.

Glad you are finally going to a 1.8 kilik. Have you decided on a BP05 or 4W? I am struggling with that decision now.

The gears in the msm tranny were shot peened and somethin else I believe not just synchros to make it stronger. I also agree with you on the rearend gearing.

Yea, shot-peened gears to resist surface cracking. Not sure how much it actually helps, but I think only one documented case of a msm tranny blowing up, and the same guy blew up multiple 5speeds quickly.

I was considering 3.63 gears, but the price went up significantly, and add in labor, it'll be like $1200+ to reduce your acceleration across the band. I figured for autox, I'll only really need 2nd to hit 60mph, and a redline raise would get real close to that.

Megasquirts work well on msm, begi has done a few. The only guy who documented it was using a custom MS1, on a custom parallel harness. Quite a few ppl running MS2 on msm, but for some reason none of them post about it. Guess I'll be the first, maybe.

Adaptronics is another good option, cheaper than hydra, with good support from boundary engineering.

Wow just checked resources for the gears (havent looked in sometime) your right thats crazy how much they want for the gears and speedo. i dont ever remember it being 629.00 was like around 400 or less. Yea i totally forgot about adaptronics, they were just gettin into stuff when i had my msm. i remember them working on their ecu and was showing it at sema, something in the law changed about emissions or something and had to scrap out a section of the ecu and change it. Alot of people were disappointed because it was a solution everyone was waiting for.

Yea, the 3.63 gears + speedo fix went up in price a few increments already, when I was ready to buy, they jumped to $500 and change, and then I decided I'd be happy with a redline raised.

Adaptronic never really took off for the msm, although I think they were finally able to get it to pass emissions after lots of troubleshooting. The price on their e420 wasn't bad at $1k, but when they upgraded to the 440, the price went up to like $1500. Only one msm in the states documented it, the guy's in seattle. Most of the other adaptronics users are from Australia (who have 3.63 gears stock). These things are technically a piggyback, since they still need to be hooked up to the stock ecu to work.
