Default Post your Megasquirt tunes/tables!

Starting to see more and more turbo miatas and build threads on here.... figured we should get a tuning thread going as well.

Won't even bother attaching on current tune, as I'm still waiting on the engine to get done, so I just threw in a lot guesses to get started. Changed a lot of things like CR, cams, injectors, etc., so going to have to start from scratch basically. I have a DIYPNP running MS2Extra pre3.3alpha5 gslender v2.8 firmware (quite the mouthful). They have newer betas, but I have not bothered to upgrade until I have a running car.

To get this thing started, here are my spark table and datalogs from the dyno runs on my old GT2560R setup on stock 99 motor. (Datalogs attached, msl format is not supported, so I just zipped it). Perhaps a little aggressive on the timing, but I was running 50/50 water/meth with a 3gph nozzle, in addition to 93 pump gas. Don't have the VE table anymore, but I believe it was around the 11.5 AFR range. On the dyno, it's a bit rich as you can see in the print out, as I had just swapped in a new fuel pump earlier that day and didn't have time to re-tune.

not too shabby.

I have about a 4 month break before my next race--whether it be TT or Time Attack, and a tune is on the short list.

A miata may be gay, but its probably faster than your car around a track. That's pretty gay.

Aaron did you take this to MBT or have any sort of knock detection device?

Neither. I did a lot of digging around the net and came across a few guys who had spark tuned their cars with very similar setups to mine on 99 engines/heads. Tried to compile all the data as best I could, smooth it out, and tone it down a little bit to be on the safe side. Plus I was spraying the 50/50 mix, so I was pretty comfortable with that. During motor disassembly, there was nothing noted showing evidence of knock/detonation, etc.

I now have some detcans and plan to spark tune my built motor once its ready. I will definitely need to, to get the most out of it, as I bought the lowest CR pistons I could find, and my custom cams will lower the dynamic compression ratio even more...might be kinda a dog out of boost.

When I bought my DIYPNP there didn't seem to be any great built-in active knock systems...but maybe there are now. I wouldn't mind throwing something simple on, to at least give me some sort of warning that, "hey i hear some knock". I am not sure what my best route is though. I see the new MSPNP2s have built in knock circuits, not sure if that's something I can adapt into my DIYPNP or what. IIRC DIYPNP has knock input and a basic 'sensitivity' adjustment...but really no proper conditioning circuitry.

Stay away from the MSPNP2 stuff unless it has changed. It is not very good at filtering. The MS3 using the texas instruments chip designed for this might be better.

I feel proper knock detection is the one thing missing from the MS repertoire and I also feel the MS3 is overkill for any of the cars that can switch to full standalones. For a long time I've been thinking of putting together a refined knock filtering circuit but just haven't had the time.

The Phormula units seem to be nice but expensive.

Have you used it extensively? How effective is it?

Dont have a knock sensor and the car is still NA so i haven't touched it. but im sure with the right tuning its pretty killer. The Ms3 as a whole was super easy to get setup and running especially running e85.

Pretty cool all the knock stuff MS3 has built in. I'm still going to hold out for some sort of mod to MS2 I think though- other than this knock stuff, the MS2 with new firmware is great, no complaints.

I saw Reverant was working on some sort of knock circuit for use on his MS2s, but I don't really know any of the details or if it would be possible on a vanilla DIYPNP.

The Megasquirt has had a knock input for a long time. The problem is that it never had a good filtering circuit and filtering is crucial in separating real knock from noise. Link to Reveran't circuit?

Knock control on the MS2 - Miata Turbo Forum - Turbo Kitten is watching you test compression.

Enhanced Megasquirt - now with more features! - Miata Turbo Forum - Turbo Kitten is watching you test compression.

MS Labs Enhanced MS2 ECU for the 01-05 and 04-05 MSM out now! - Miata Turbo Forum - Turbo Kitten is watching you test compression.

TPIC8101 DSP chip, it says

@Lex, you should develop some sort of "external knock module" for DIYPNP/MS2, I'd buy it! On the miata forum I believe there would be a good market for it, assuming price was reasonable (they are cheap asses)

Yup that's the correct dsp. I know all about the cheapness Also I wouldn't make an add-in board, it would be a standalone knock detector that you can plug into any standalone. The key is making a simple interface to bring in some nice to have signals for signal filtering such as engine speed. It's on the backburner at the moment.

Here's a good thread, if you haven't already seen it.
