MSR Cresson 3.1 9/10&11/2011

Video from this weekend. Really enjoyed the capability of low end spool of the GT28 in the left-right-left combo and on the hairpin left just after I pass the corvette. Allowed me to stay in 3rd gear in both places and had enough grunt to maximize traction as I exited the corner. Shifting to second would have been hairball as throttle modulation would have been even twichier. Dissappointing about the clutch, but if everything was perfect I guess there wouldn't be much of a reason to keep going. Still running in blue group with drivers edge, and there was a wide variance in speeds so alot of my laps got held up in traffic.

Instructor helped me with minimizing my braking prior to this session, which helped me make it through all my sessions without boiling the fluid. He was a miata guy so never uses the brakes. Had another great experience with drivers edge. Assuming I can get the clutch sorted out, I will definitely be running with them again in December.

They are 235/40s sorry, getting my last set (225/45) mixed up with this set.

That track should be fun, but my turbo is certainly too small for there. Rumor is it's going to cost like 600+ for a weekend there so I don't know if I will be able to justify it. I could get twice the time in elsewhere for the same amount of money.

Nothing against HPDE, but it wouldn't hurt to start off smaller, such as autox if you have limited seat time. It's certainly cheaper to do so.

What was your instructors name?

Rick. Never got a last name, but he was great. He took me out twice in his Miata which taught me more than I got in the classroom sessions honestly. While the classroom sessions are great, in blue at least they are mostly a rehash of things I learned previously.

What color was the miata? I'm pretty sure I rode with an instructor named Rick at TWS back in March. His name was either Rick or Robert (can't remember)... He had a silver Miata that, to the best of my knowledge, didn't even have brakes.

Auto-x mistakes certainly cost alot less than road course ones, but I don't know if its really cheaper from a seat time perspective. The upfront cost is higher for HPDE, but seat time is also a lot higher.

A weekend with drivers edge costs me $295, but I end up with over 2.5 hours of "hot" seat time. Thats $118/hr, compared to an autocross where a single day usually runs ~$90 but you only get like 10min max seat time, and that's if your lucky, which works out to 540$/hr

Then factor in drivers edge assigns you an instructor (both if which have been great) and provides classroom instruction it's no contest for the learning value per dollar. They are well setup to handle noob drivers in everything from civics to ferraris. To run green (beginner) group you don't need anything other than a helmet. Your speeds wont justify better tires/brake pads etc till you are in blue.

Might be the same guy. He was driving a green NB, but he also has a supercharged one, I don't know the color. His brother was there too with his beautiful V8 miata that I jokingly posted in the rice of the day thread.

that's an expensive autox, clubs around here run 30 bucks, 25 for scca members. Every now and then we will get a roadcourse/autox hybrid at a US Army training facility and that costs 100 for a two day event.

You also don't get in 10' of seat time usually. 90$ is for a practice event put on by a club that is maintaining the course the whole day and providing the event. Those $30 ones usually mean you are working the course at some point and you don't get in more than 5-6 runs on a sub 1min course.

Auto-x is a great way to learn basic car control in a safe environment. But you do not have to start there if you are interested in running road courses. Alot of skills required for advanced auto-x driving are not useful on the road course and vice versa. Hell the optimum car setup is miles apart between the two.
