Default SCCA Philadelphia

Another fun day on street tires in DS.

I met two other MS3 owners as well, good times!

Sorry for the crappy video quality.

I am running Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2s in 235-40-18. They scream a lot but seem to grip reasonably well. I wish I could get another set of wheels with R-comps! I begin to wonder if I should try competing in a road tire class, I can't match the grip other guys are getting... Funny you mentioned my steering because I've been told that I'm too rough and I need to be more smooth in my inputs. However, to me, it seems that the MS3 needs to be treated roughly to drive fast. I have a lot to learn, its only my second full season.

I wouldn't go R-comp if you want to stay in DS:

next year, only 140 treadwear and up in the new D "street" category.

Yeah, I've noticed that my fastest runs are those that are more aggressive. I'm running about center PAX for each event. However, there's a GS Focus ST that's been running top 1/3 PAX. I've been watching his driving very closely and he's definitely smooth.
Also, i'm pretty that same GS driver is using the Eagle Asymmetrics 235/40-18 too.

Both of us need more driver mod

First event for 2014!

I finished in PAX 31/150ish. Not bad!

Comment, tips or insults, or all welcome.

This one is from last weekend in my MS3. video has my experimental GPS based speed information. It’s too laggy.
Run #4, Best run of the day

Also a cool pic of my car

So you were the guy in the other MS3? Did not know you were on here. I finished right behind you in PAX.

One thing I noticed is your steering input can definitely be smoother through the slalom (could just be how the camera is as well). Not sure of your pedal position, but keeping it steady through the slalom is key! This car loves to be easy in hard out. Too hard in you kill all your momentum through the center and on exit.

Of course I'll add my video of my fastest run as well

What a small world. I ran 1st and worked second so I was leaving when you were going on the course (3rd group?). I did see a dark gen1 on the grid, I guess it must have been you!

I looked at your video and you're definitely much smoother than I am, I can tell even without seeing your steering inputs. I tend to get overly anxious once I realize it's a good run and then I go way too fast into each gate and try to compensate with power. I will have to force myself to slow down to be faster.

What tires are you running? I'm on 235/40/18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 summer tires.

Hope to see you at the next event, I've had shitty interactions in the Nator PA section on the forum so it will be nice to chat with a friendly person for a change.

Yup, that was me!

Definitely work on not driving in as deep. You'll be surprised how much time you can pick up! Practice practice practice! Try different lines etc...

Currently I am on a pretty used up set of hankook rs3's 255/40/17 on TRC3 17x9 wheels. Would love to get a set of hoosiers, but I am still undecided if I want to do away with the front mount so I can move into STX since these cars are a little more competitive in that class. DSP is dominated by BMW's and now RX8's are slowly coming around. The other guy that was running in DSP with the lettered up/trailered car is nationally competitive. His car won Nationals at Lincoln last year.

Right now I should be able to attend the next event. Who was giving you a hard time in the Nator PA section?

Long story short, I asked for some help with HPFP on Nator PA and I ended up being told to shut up since I'm a "newb" (based on my post count). I don't have any tolerance for people who think they have acquired some special rights on a forum because of post count. Fuck this.

Anyway, so there was a rust off session on 4/13. I went to practice my lines and so forth, not much tweaking for me since I'm stock. In the afternoon we setup a full course and I was practicing my slaloms.

For the first part of the course, I was trying to tap my brakes a little to get the front end to turn in, I discovered it's a very fine line between slowing too much or loosing front end grip and attaining the desired effect. Do you frequently use your brakes on the turn in?

The second part was a long straight slalom and I could hold a steady 41-43 mph in this second section. I did notice that I seemed to do better when I threw the car into a turn aggressively rather then trying to be smooth, seems like I was getting more rotation out of the back end, which was helping me to go through the slalom.

SCCA Philly 5/17.

It was nice to meet 461_SS and thanks for the ride along.

Not a great day for me but I had fun, my best run was ruined by one cone in a spot I never had issues with, it would have been good for 53.5ish if recall?

Nice to meet you as well. A shame the first run I went off course but o well. I'll upload my video at some point today. Ended up in the low 51s.

And another one from June 8th at Wells Fargo in Philly. Great day, with close to 160 drivers. I met another MS3 with a red gen pu, forgot to ask if he is on here.

Possibly? He's on the PA Mazdas facebook page since I was talking to him on there. He mentioned he spoke with you. Should be seeing him at other events as well. He had a blast!

Excellent, it's nice to see some MS3s out there. Unfortunately, I only spoke to him very briefly, I was on my way out and he was about to start his runs. I think he mentioned he was new to auto-x, if that's the case he is really good because his times were great and he hit no cones nor went off course- impressive!

When are you coming back? This was a really nice course, I think you would have enjoyed it. Next one is at Wells Fargo again.

Yeah I saw your video. Would have definitely enjoyed it! I'll be back for the next one as long as I have some tires left form this weekend. NEPA is hosting a 2 day regional event at Pocono Saturday and Sunday. Registration is still open. Supposed to be a fast course!

Yes, I did look into it. In fact, Rich (black Focus ST, DSP) was also mentioning this event to me last weekend- he is going up there to stay with his family for the weekend. Unfortunately, for me, it's 2 hours away and I would prefer to go for two days which means I should get a hotel and probably come up on Friday night... Also, I don't know if I read this correctly but gates are opening at 6 am. Anyway, not enough time to coordinate all this so I'll have to skip this year, with a heavy heart of course.

I'll try to get myself organizer for next year for sure.

Yup I talked the guy (Rich) with the black focus to check out NEPA SCCA and that event. I'm leaving at 4am to head up there. No time needed to coordinate just show up! They won't turn you down and i'll just talk to Chris. haha.

rndms3 this weekend is your perfect weekend! two days of autocross on Pocono east course!

That event does look like it will be awesome and my lady and I have actually been looking to camp out around there this summer, and I've never been to the Pocono Raceway before, but it's a bad weekend. Both parents birthdays plus father's day. Shit.

You're more brave than me. I actually managed to catch a cold so I have no energy for any of this, lame excuse, I know. Good luck this weekend and post some videos if you can.

I've never seen a course set up like that @461_SS; there were some long straight runs in there. Chances for 3rd gear? How many people ran that day?

You'll only see a course like that at Pocono! Never left third gear! I could have a few times, but I wasn't going to beat the shit out of my tranny. I figured the torque would pull me through since that is what gets you out of the turns! 104 people ran that day if memory serves me correct.

If you are asking who is driving, that is me lol. It is a blast! Much more fun then going in a straight line!

Anyone else also notice the wheel hop at the start? JBR Rear and Passenger (Highest durometer bushings) and TRZ Tranny mount and they can't handle 255 RS-3's lolololol Fail Wheel Drive 4tw!

Wheel hop on all those mounts? That's pretty crazy. Just a rmm did away with mine, but then again I've never driven on super sticky wheels 2 inches wider than mine haha.

Looks like the next one on that track is September 20th? I can haz 3rd gear course?

That's a really nice course, as expected for this event. Definitely making sure to attend next year. An entire auto-x course in 3rd gear, that's fantastic!

Great driving as always. I watched Eric Simmons video from the same event (driving the BRZ): he was in 65.x range which means you were a second away from one of the fastest auto-x drivers in attendance. On a faster courses like this, the MS3 certainly starts to shine. How is GC kit by the way?

Yup, I want to go over them all and check them to make sure they are alright. The engine really shouldn't be moving at all. Never had a problem at any of the other AutoX events. The tires aren't super sticky, but much better than most. Definitely a lot more grip that is for sure!

I am thinking it most likely will be a 3rd gear course again! Both times I have been to the Pocono events were 3rd gear!

Great driving as always. I watched Eric Simmons video from the same event (driving the BRZ): he was in 65.x range which means you were a second away from one of the fastest auto-x drivers in attendance. On a faster courses like this, the MS3 certainly starts to shine. How is GC kit by the way?
It was awesome! Hence why I was trying to get people to come! Maybe now more people will make the trek out!

I definitely think with tires that weren't as worn (if I ran STX or Hoosiers for DSP) and new suspension I could have easily been in the 65's. Sadly enough suspension still has not come in.... Was told that it will be leaving Monday. Hopefully for the next AutoX I will have the Suspension in! And yes, the MS3 enjoys a more flowing course over the really tight ones. The turbo helps big time when in between gears since the torque pulls you out of wherever you are. Trick is to not break the tires loose haha.

Another great event with Mr. 461_SS breaking into the 39s.

Here's my fastest run. 41.6s and first event on the new Bridgestone S04 pole position 235/40/18. Comments and tips are always welcome.

I'll be out again sometime soon. I want to so bad! I'm in the middle of a tune and would rather be finished before I run another event. I'd like to get out and do one of the Susquehanna events as well.

I got my eye on that 9/20 Pocono Raceway event too! That looked like too much fun!

I'm gonna have to take a trip and come down and race with you guys. I've heard good things about the region.

It's a well run organization, I really can't complain. It would be nice to see more people from the forum out there.

The Pocono event in August is NOT on the racetrack like the one before, it's in the parking lot. I'm going to skip this one and attend the last two ones.

More videos from the two day Al Holbert event in July. I had a great time and did okay.

461_SS ended up sharing a Focus ST on the second day with the owner, I'm actually curious to hear about his impressions on the Ford. 461_SS was also the fastest out of us 3.

The course was 0.6 miles long, weather was perfect and lots of people showed up. We ran the same course both days, just reversing start/finish and a few elements near these two areas. On day one, the last section before the long 180 turn was really fast, I was on the rev limiter in 2nd gear at 60 MPH but other drivers who shifted into 3rd or had longer gears were hitting close to 70. They made this section a little more tight on the second day.

I did have a few issues with my car popping out of 2nd gear and my center console eating my key fob (thanks for helping me out Rich!) but otherwise everything went well. We did 7 runs the first day (4 am and 3 pm) but unfortunately had to cut it short to only 4 runs on the second day due to some delays (cars breaking down on the course, etc.). So, I actually did not do my very best on the 2nd day, I was still leaving some room in a few braking zones, etc.

Day 1

2nd gear popped out!

Fastest run, clean

1 cone but the time was 50.163s, I can't quite figure out why I was faster compared to my clean run above.

Day 2
Fastest Run, clean

Pictures. This is the SCCA Philly forum, posts have a bunch of links. Lots of cool cars!
