Coolant in engine bay

So I was driving yesterday, not hard at all (you can beleive me because my mom was in the car) and I hear a loud bang (during a shift while accelerating from a light). First thought was, oh shit, bent rod, but the car runs and idles fine. Not even a slight sound out of place. Then I start to smell glycol. I figured it was the car that exploded in white smoke about 3 cars in front of me at about the same time (oh the irony).

But when I get to where I'm going, I smell coolant coming from my car. Open the hood, and sure enough the engine bay on the drivers side is covered in coolant. All over the tranny, intake, battery box, radiator fan, etc. Overflow box is empty. Not all the coolant was gone, and it didn't look like any was leaking (no pool starting to form) so I was able to drive it home just fine (kept eyes on temp).

Spent today pulling parts off the car trying to find the leak, and I couldn't find anything. All the hoses were intact and were where they were supposed to be. Most of the coolant pooling was by the bottom driver side of the radiator, which leads me to beleive a cracked radiator but I cant find a crack anywhere yet. Still need to get a few tools from my friend tomorrow to pull the radiator and inspect it, but I wanted to get you all's opinion first. I'm really just curious if you had heard of anything like this before, and what you think attributed to the bang before hand.

not sure if this would make a big bang, but the hose that runs on top of the radiator going form side to side sometimes hits the fan and gets a small hole.

Listen I had the same thing happen to me, except I heard the noise yesterday and saw coolant all over the engine today. Put some coolant in, start the car and look for a leak everywhere you see fresh coolant while the car is idling. Keep an eye on the temps making sure you dont overheat. My leak is coming from my top coolant hose connected to the engine. I think it just popped because of getting old and the pressure in the system getting to it.. Someone post up a part number!!!!!!

Volodya, so you heard the bang as well before the leak? If so, maybe it is one of my hoses. I'll keep looking.

Philly, Is that part # for the 3 or the 6? Just so happens that same hose startin leakin on me this mornin(from both ends at the connections). car hasnt been run in months and is still sitting on jackstands. WTF?

i dont know what is it with all these hoses, dannit!.. Could someone chime in and tell me if thats the same hose that the thermsostat is housed in? because if it is id like to replace it all in one sitting, as better safe than sorry in these cases.

Wow, it was staring me in the face. Phillyb was right, it was the top hose that ran above the radiator, which contacted the fan and got a nice gash in it...
I can't quite make out what hose it is in the diagram though. Anyone know which one I am talking about and can give me a part number? It runs from the top of the radiator on the passenger side, and crosses on the top of the radiator, where it turns and hits the block.

I ordered the hose from onlinemazdaparts.com for 26 bicks. Anyhow, I bought a couple rolls of rescue tape and will apply that as a temporary fix and see how that holds up to pressure tomorrow. My hose will come in on tuesday and maybe itll last me a bit until I get around to installing it the weekend after.

Ok, so it looks like its leaking from the end of the hose where the metal connection is going to it. Unban phillyb, so he can give me that damn part number!!! I think the whole assembly is 61-211 on the diagram. Someone please chime in here with that part number.

OP, did you ever figure your leak out???

I have two. One is definitely coming from (there is a water outlet that attaches to a few coolant hoses and goes into the engne) the hose that attaches to the water outlet and loops around the back of the engine (i think it goes to the heater core).

The second one is coming from the water outlet itself, I believe. However, Im not 100%. I know I changed out at first the upper radiator hose clamp that attached the upper coolant hose to the water outlet and put rescue tape on the hose, and just now I changed out the hose altogether. Its still leaking from that area, and leaking badly.

Volodya84, yes I did. Check post #14. It was the hose that runs on top of the radiator. It popped out of its clip and was riding the radiator fan. Fan wore the hose down, and when it got thin enough, it popped under the pressure when the water got to operating temp. Replaced with OEM hose direct from Mazda. Was an easy swap, and the problem is gone.
