Default A quick question about routers

Currently I am running a 100 ft. ethernet cable across the backyard from the main house to my back house. That cable is coming from the router inside the main house. As of now, I need to unplug the cable from the computer in order to play the PS3 online. I would like to be able to operate both the computer and PS3 without switching the cable manually.

So, can I run from one router to another router?

If so, will I still get a decent connection??

Here is a cheesy diagram of what I want to do so you can get a good idea.

If you want to watch internet porn, just do it at the main house after everyone's asleep.

Ok get a switch to replace the router in the backyard house OR log into it and turn off the router operations and make it a switch, like no dhcp, nat etc. Then it will work. You are having ip, routing and nat conflicts between the two.

yeah you can use another router or switch liek you want. you could also go ad-hoc with the back house computer and use that internet connection. google is your friend.

Sorry, I'm a noob to this. I don't have the second router yet, just the one ethernet cable from the main house. Basically, when i want to play PS3 online, I unplug the cable from the computer and plug it into the PS3. It works, but I'd prefer to not have to do it manually.

A switch sounds good. Something that directs the ethernet connection to either the computer or the PS3 by means of a switch. That would be cool.

Can you recommend anything??

Thanks for your help fellas.

Yes, you can run one router from another. Plug the Ethernet into a wireless router in your place. Equip your computer and PS3 with wireless cards. You should be able to use them both...at once.

IT right here.... get a Ethernet Switch.. Plug and play... a router u will have to change the Ip Address on it because it will most likely conflict with the other router.. cant have 2 192.168.1.xxx addreses on the same subnet trying to connect to each other..

Get a Ethernet switch an plug it in and go to town..

I got it all working. I picked up an ethernet hub and that did it. I can now run both the computer and PS3 simultaneously.

Thanks again for all your replies.

np.. a hub is kinda like a switch, the only differance is a Hub, splits the connection in half if you use 2 ports, a 3rd for 3.. etc.. so u have a 100mbps connection, with 2 active ports, each will get 50mbps... with a switch, Every port gets 100mbps... u prolly wont notice a differance with 2 devices on it..

I haven't noticed a difference. Last night I played MW2 and was on the internet at the same time and nothing was slow.

you can use 2 routers, just make sure you also setup their ip ranges...192.168.1.x for the first and 192.168.2.x for the second. That way you don't have any IP conflicts

Thanks for all the help boys. The hub is working beautifully. Although it is splitting the connection between the two components, there hasn't been any problems.

if you notice any issues or hiccups when using multiple devices that put a high bandwidth demand on the hub, you'll want to toss it for a switch...

this is 2010. you should have got a switch instead of a hub. lol.

in reality though, if youre only using it for internet traffic, then it really doesn't matter.

why on earth would you want to use a router behind a router? You'll be double NAT'ing...its beyond inefficient. All you need to do is turn off the routing protocols, like natting, dhcp etc. and turn it into a switch and it will work great.

or just plug it into the internal switch (which 99% of home routers have...)

in reality though, if youre only using it for internet traffic, then it really doesn't matter.
I really don't think it'll be a problem. It's only for internet and online gaming. Plus, The hub was only $20 bucks. The switch was close to $40. That and two 3' ethernet cables from Radio Shit for $10 bucks each.

$40 to get it all working or $60 to use a switch instead of a hub. I took the cheaper route.

It doesn't seem to be straining the connection. Even when both components are running simultaneously, the lights on the hub don't blink, they stay constant. That usually means a good, solid connection.
