Default Preventing rust - the cancer for cars

I've had a few cars develop rust and decided to experiment with DIY spraying a rust inhibiting spray on the underside of the MS3 since new. 5+ years later and no rust. Yes, I am not on the east coast but by this time in the car's life, even in my area, the underside of the Mazda 3s have rusty suspensions and subframes.

I've found a spray that I am very happy with:

As a bonus, taking off any bolts is a pleasure! Do you guys undercoat?

I've tried several and got this online based on its effectiveness. I was impressed in that it did not drip like the other ones I have tried. It is also used for off shore oil rigs and an industrial product so I think it will be quite effective.

On a new vehicle I would coat it with Monstaliner's Chassis Saver. I've been extremely happy with their prodicts.

I got the permanent rubberized undercoating on my car when I bought it new. For touch ups or new parts or whatever though I use fluid film. Costs about $10 a can, lasts quite a while, doesn't drip or make too big of a mess and can be sprayed literally anywhere without worrying (safe on rubber, paint, etc).

This is what I do for rust prevention. So far it has worked really well.

I'm a big proponent on corrosion inhibitors. I used to be an off-road junkie, where rust/corrosion is a huge problem, especially in areas where the water can become trapped and sit for long periods.

The two products I always had recommended to me were LPS 3 and Boeshield T-9. I've had great success with both of them, however I believe some of the cheaper products will work just as well.

I need to do some rust repair this spring. I may try this stuff out when I get rid of it all.

Thanks for this useful recommendation, I have been looking for a decent rust prevention spray for my car's underside since in New Mexico, they tend to salt the road a lot!

Man, I really wish I would have thought of this when my car was new. I have a 2009, so I'm on my 5th winter in central PA. Do you think it's worth starting this now, or has the damage been done? I suppose it can't hurt to start now; the cars underside isn't horribly rusty or anything. Thanks for the info @Lex;

My lower control arms are quite rusty as is the rear sway bar area. Where do you get this in Canada? Canadian tire doesn't have this brand but they have some other rust inhibitors.

Perfect timing, I just ordered 2 cans from Amazon to try out, prepping for the first winter with the Pu.

Better than nothing considering the nasty chemical shit they are using on the roads here now...apparently CT is too cheap to pay the extra 40 cents a gallon for the 'corrosion inhibitor' additive other states use in their mix.

I have a 2009 and there is some surface rust on the edges underneath my car, is it too late to do this now?

My google ninja skills tell me that Acklunds carries it in Canada. I might go check next week sometime.

It's never too late to start. However don't use it on areas that you plan on painting if you plan on doing any sort of rust repair.

I used the Canadian Tire brands before and this is quite a bit better. One of the big advantages is that it doesn't drip off the chassis making a mess. I bought it from Amazon.

Default Here is what I use. ACF-50

This stuff was recommend to me by people in the aviation industry when I was looking for something to protect my motorcycle. I covered my entire motorcycle with it, fairings, wiring and all. Rode through salty Maryland roads all winter. Nothing sticks to this stuff. I would rinse off the bike afterwards and it looked brand new. 2 full years of riding and it worked great. I'm gonna try it on my speed this year.

thanks for this! I've been researching some undercoat choices and this looks like a great choice. How many cans did you use for 1 application?

I used 2 cans. If you get overspray on the exhaust it will smell a bit the first couple of drives - not a problem at all though.

You can get them in Spray cans. They also sell them in 4liter and up canisters. I got a 32oz bottle that came with a hand pump spray bottle that worked very well. You can use the big hand pump, garden type sprayers for larger applications. Which is what I plan on using to coat the car. I Plan to coat the entire underbody and engine bay. Here is the link to where I got it from.

The speed 3 I just bought has a little rust on the bottom so I've been researching this kind of stuff online.
My plan was to clean as much off as I can, then paint with something like the Eastwood rust encapsulator paint followed by a rubberized undercoating and top it all off with something like the LPS 3

Avoid the exhaust to avoid the smell and avoiding the brake rotors is also a good idea

Not to resurrect, but make sure you take off things that may be in the way of a good spray (like side skirts), and pressure wash the underbody if you can, or just spray wash the underbody and let it dry for a day (best done over the weekend). rust-proof any specific areas and then spray with an underbody coating of your choice. 3M makes good stuff. Hasn't dripped on me and seems pretty bullet proof, 2 salty winters under its belt now.

After trying both I prefer a grease type spray versus paint on stuff. The painted stuff like Por15 are very messy and require a very clean surface and proper adhesion. They also can hide rust forming and create moisture packets. The grease is easy to apply, cheap, not terribly messy, and keeps bolts easy to remove as well.

idk why i havent thought of this but i havent. my car goes thru the ringer in winter and has started rusting up pretty decent. I'm gonna have this thing on jack stands for a week this spring removing and blasting all the rusty parts and repainting all of it. I shoudl definitely give her a coat of this stuff while i'm at it. Thanks for the heads up

Yeah true......Will the spray work good with like slight surface rust?

I planned on at least sanding/light sanding most of it down and painting or doing something. Just want a very clean undericarrage

i wire brushed my underbody this year and repainted it. The key is getting ALL the rust off tho so it wont keep spreading. I wasn't able to get rid of all of it thats why i'll be removing and blasting this spring. Wire brush is much easier than sanding

Ahh yeah, thatd be a lot better using wire brush....Probably would have thought about that after i did all the sanding hahaha.

Are you removing parts or having a place sandblast all underneath and paint it?

Cause i have a buddy that can sandblast for me for next to nothing and i could paint or have a place paint/powdercoat parts......Like all rear end needs a lil loving. only seen one winter with me, last 3 yrs been in garage.....ANd subframe just needs a wire brush and paint which is nothing

I would spray this over underbody surface rust to prevent any more spread. If you sandblast the underbody and paint it you will likely get more rust in the end since the coverage is never ideal unless done by a professional with the right tools.

Remove dirt, leave the paint that remains and just apply this.
