Default Rust fix

I hope this is in the right place.

I have this rust spot on the back directly under the rear windshield wiper that i could use some tips on. I tried to fix it last winter but it was an incredibly cold day and the paint didn't dry right, and the rust is coming back through anyway.

Any tips on technique of how to fix this spot before i start sanding? Anyone else have rust in this same spot? Seems like a weird spot

I don't need a show quality car, or I'd take it to a body shop, but I'm hoping i can at least hide it fairly well and stop the rust

use something like por15 or Eastwood rust encapsulator as your base. When applied properly it lasts a long time.

To do it right you'd have to pull the window, because there'll be some rust under there that you can't mitigate if you leave it in place.

You need to remove paint from rusted area. Clean off as much rust as you can. Then, use something like phosphoric acid to convert the rust. Spots will turn black. Next, you should apply primer. If you have access to a compressor using epoxy primer would be best. It has good corrosion protection and it is the primer I'm going to use on the undercarriage when I go to restore it. Then you apply paint.

I hope this helps.

Also, I think POR15 sucks. I have used it and it didn't last long. However, some people swear by it.

2005 Mazda 3 SP23: mods include rusty quarter panels and grinding 3rd gear. It does have a fusion motor, so I guess that's a mod too.
