Default BOOST HELP!!!

So my brother just bought a 03 MSP with 28,000 miles on it. A few weeks after he bought it he said it feels like the turbo isn't working. I installed a boost gauge and turbo xs manual boost controller. I'm pretty sure they are both hooked up correctly. I t'd the boost gauge off the vac line off the top of the intake manifold. And the MBC is also t'd off the same vac line and the wastegate line. With the bottom of the MBC going to the wastegate line. But his boost gauge reads nothing. With the MBC all the way turned down I turned it up 1/4 of a turn. And still nothing at all. Anyone have any solutions? I read that the wastegates in these cars go bad pretty easily? Maybe I have something hooked up wrong? He's been driving it and it drives fine just no boost. Turbo isn't grinding or making any noise or anything. If more info is needed let me know. I can get pictures of whatever is needed. It also looks like his turbo is leaking oil. I'm hoping it's not a bad turbo but it's looking like it. Thanks for the help!!!

Wow, so people only help others on this forum if they have paid money? Out of all the forums I've been apart of this is the only one where you apparently have to pay for people's help. I'll just stick with another mazda forum where I've already been given some good info for free.

Thanks,
Ryan

Well if someone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. My brother bought the car to enjoy but currently the car doesn't seem to be building any boost. I have the boost gauge t'd up to the u-shaped vacuum line at the back of the manifold. I have the vacuum hose coming out of the wastegate running to the bottom of the turbo xs MBC and the other line on the MBC is t'd into the vacuum line that connects to the BPV. Does this make sense and seem like the correct way to have everything hooked up? With the MBC turned all the way down I turned up 1/4 of a turn counter clock wise and I still wasn't getting a reading on the boost gauge. My thought are either bad wastegate or turbo. The turbo does seem to be leaking oil as well. Any HELPFUL comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

This is unlike any forum you've ever been a part of. Here's what you need to know, and this is coming from someone who hasn't even been on this particular forum half a year.

1. You need thick skin. These guys are assholes, it's hilarious, sometimes you're the butt of the joke... sometimes you can add to the joke.

2. That said... the same "assholes" are some of the most knowledgeable guys I've ever dealt with... even some of the "you need to learn how to search" answers contain more useful information than you'll get from other forums.

3. Donating is optional... but those of us who have donated and know you're willing to CONTRIBUTE to the community in order to get help are far more willing to provide answers and help, sometimes with questions that have been answered countless times. Yes, donating is optional... but when you do donate, it shows the rest of the community that you're IN. You've made your contribution, and now you can be taken more seriously.

4. This is the internet. We embrace it here... VIP gets you free pr0nz, and that's just the tip of the iceberg... you get a lot for being a VIP here, and that includes the respect of those who know (I'll reiterate this over and over again) that you're willing to contribute to the community because those we know contribute are those we help. You help us, we help you, simple as that.

ALSO.. as far as your problem is concerned... get some pictures... explanations only go so far, when we can actually SEE what you're talking about, we can help.

I''m not upset in the slightest. Like I said if no one wants to help here it's really not going to hurt my feelings at all. I have received some helpful comments on another mazda forum. Just looking for some more opinions into the problem my brothers car is having that's all. Hopefully someone can help me out.

Thanks,
Ryan

That is understandable I guess, although the fact that people are willing to really help only those that have contributed seems slightly ignorant. I mean I thought the whole idea of car forums was so people could share their interests in a particular car and help that platform progress? Guess I'm wrong. But it is what it is I guess. My feelings aren't hurt.

sure why not...ill give it a go.

first off. if u are trying to discern if you have a bad wastegate ...eliminate as many variables as you can.

get rid of the mbc and hook up the shit stock....because a) this eliminates the possibility of u having had hooked mbc incorrectly and b) eliminates the possibility of the mbc being bad.

the gauge should be simple enough to leave...so use it for monitoring shit..but re check you dont have loose shit.

now...next step is check for boost leaks....dont assume its the wastegate right off the bat because they might have a history....keep an open mind.

once you check for leaks....then address the wg.

if u can reach the turbo....take the rod from the flapper valve ..usually kept on with a lil E clip....and once its free see if u can move the flapper valve freely....if u can then u no u have no binding or sticking.

next hook wg back together....and take a hose and use compressed air to introduce "boost" into he diaphragm ...(vacuum canister looking shit) use like 20 psi of compressed air and see if u can force the wg rod to move back and forth....if u cant..then yo shit is fucked right there.... if it works....then im out of ideas.

good luck

Don't the MSP's run at wastegate pressure? I don't remember them having any form of boost control on the car stock. Dunno if this makes any difference but I'm just thinking out loud from what I remember.

Thank you for you help. When he bought the car it had a shitty looking MBC already hooked up and whoever did the install did a really shitty job. So I ordered him a new turbo XS MBC and new boost gauge. With that being said I'm not sure where the vacuum line from the WG goes from the factory? This is the first mazda i've worked on so this is a completely new platform for me so sorry if I seem ignorant. I'm trying to learn as fast as I can. Again thanks for the help.

Itks located above the turbo inlet. Mine just took a shit, 1 line goes to the inlet as a recirc and the other goes to the WG. Do what they said prev... return it to stock and start over.

Don't let the guys get to u. They mean well.

also, a bad wastegate won't create NO BOOST unless it is stock open, which is very unlikely...a bad wastegate created high boost..meaning your boost gauge should be reading upwards of 14PSI.
this will create fuel cut which means you will hit a wall any time you boost.

now, if you had boost leak (if you are 100% stock, it is very likely one of the plastic pipes has a hole in it or just came off) then yea...

also, make sure the vacuum line you are feeding from doens't have a restrictor or one way valve.
