Default Cp-E customer service...?

So, my Standback went out for the second time in two years. I contacted Cp-e and was told they no longer service the unit, their electrical engineering department is closed. I can understand that and I'd be glad to work with them resolving the issue- I reminded Cp-e that I paid for a lifetime warranty with my Standback.

"We are pushing the Cobb now", Chunie tells me.

So, Cp-e's solution to my Standbacks lifetime warranty is a discount on a Cobb AP.

Pure garbage! Not that the Cobb AP is bad, it's better than what I have because it apparently works!
What's garbage is their 'lifetime warranty' and their word mean nothing.

What did you spend on your standback?

I think that amount should be your credit towards an AP.

Well it does have a lifetime warranty, so IMO, that's what they should be doing...

If you give it to him, what are you going to do to keep your door from closing?

I would get the AP if they make it cost you $450 or less. The Standback is so outdated.

The lifetime warranty was in place 6 years ago when it came out. But when like 4 years ago, the guy who knew how to program it, left, the standback unofficially became an expensive doorstop.

Lifetime does mean lifetime.

If they cannot fix it, they must replace it or provide a solution, at no cost to the customer.

I hope CP-E still has the ability to flash your stock MAP onto the ECU.

Cp-E

As we discussed by phone, the problem isn't with the harness- The problem goes away once I bypass the unit. The problem is the unit itself, so you didn't offer me a solution to honoring the lifetime warranty.
I told you I wanted to send the whole thing back, harness and Standback. You told me it would simply be returned to me untouched and not to do that.

As for the 'significant discount on an Accessport'.. again, as we discussed by phone, Thank you.... but, I paid for a lifetime warranty on a twice failed tuning solution. Offering me a discount on another tuning solution is not honoring the lifetime warranty.
Why should the customer pay twice for something that should function and is warranted for a lifetime?

You have my phone number, sir..

No sir, I made it clear in my first post when I said:

So, Cp-e's solution to my Standbacks lifetime warranty is a discount on a Cobb AP.
If you mean returning the harness, it's not a harness issue so I didn't feel it was worth noting. I suggested to Chunie that I send the whole thing back, but was told it would be shipped back to me untouched.
My apology if you feel I was misleading.

I would think they know how the unit works. If they say it is a harness issue it probably it. Sounds like you are just being a bitch.

Take the AP and run, you're being an idiot.

Lifetime warranty typically means for the lifetime/viable life of a product, the sb has been long discontinued.

"A lifetime warranty is usually a guarantee on the lifetime of the product on the market rather than the lifetime of the consumer [1] (the exact meaning should be defined in the actual warranty documentation). If a product has been discontinued and is no longer available, the warranty may last a limited period longer."

What he said.^^^^^^^^^^

lifetime warranty does sometimes mean the life of the product you own, and can also mean the lifetime the product is available.

Please just get the AP and save yourself the Judge Judy bullshit.

If they won't fix the thing they need to refund the purchase price or give you the ap. As far as I'm concerned.

Actually, the OP inspired me. I bought a brand new 15" CRT monitor for $500 in 1998 with lifetime warranty. It stopped working a while back. Imma call them and have them send me a factory fresh replacement or refund me the full $500.

Anyone know if Tandy still makes computer monitors?

I have an 8-track player that has stopped working years ago, has a lifetime warranty. I wonder if they'll honor it.

Pretty sure they were owned/bought out by Radioshack. It would be pretty funny if you took that thing in to you local RadioShack and demanded a refund/repair.

Apparently my position is misunderstood. I am in no way demanding that Cp-e fix the Standback unit. It's malfunctioned twice in two years, I have no confidence in the product at this point.
I am certainly willing to entertain other tuning options like the Accessport, but if it's less than the cost of my Standback unit I am not willing to pay for it. If it's more I will gladly pay the difference. I don't think that's an unreasonable position.

Do you have any of the flashes, and are they of any significant impact to transitioning to an AP?

Since the AP copies the existing tune, often the stock tune, to memory, is there reason to be concerned about transitioning from a fully flashed SB install to an AP?

Presuming the move to an AP is safe, if you wanted to sell the car at a later date, would it be possible to put the car on a tune/map that could be sold?

From cp-e.com (bold for important part)

Warranty
cp-e™ prides itself on the production of quality parts. All of our parts come with a lifetime warranty against defects in workmanship or materials for the original purchaser. Our lifetime warranty does not include short blocks, cylinder heads, and non cp-e™ parts. You must provide us with a copy of your invoice as proof of purchase. In the event that a defect occurs cp-e™ will repair the item. If the item cannot be repaired cp-e™ will then replace the item.

cp-e says they will replace an item that they can not repair, from what the OP has said cp-e said do not bother sending it in because they cannot repair it... therefore cp-e has to replace the item.
Now since the product is discontinued, it would be fair that the replacement be the product of equal or better function, in this case an AP.

Lawyered!?

PS Off topic but does anyone know if the SB can be used on other cars? I have one collecting dust and I was wondering if I could use it to do some basic tuning on a mitsubishi gsr

Product life is a determining factor though. If an item is discontinued, you may be out of luck. Hell, take the free harness and be 100% sure that it doesn't fix anything. If it doesn't then continue with another option. But a lifetime warranty is just that, the life of the product. The above guys examples are extreme, but correct. Legally cp-e probably doesn't HAVE to do anything if the item was officially discontinued. They probably SHOULD from a customer service standpoint though, which seems like what they're trying to do.

NO disclaimer on discontinued items, NO disclaimer on exactly what "lifetime warranty" is, no "NOTICE FOR STANDBACK CUSTOMERS"

Cp-e should be replacing this or making it right...they are not warranting there lifetime warranty because the lifetime warranty isnt shit, its just a selling point.

IF They dont expect you to use the LIFETIME part of warranty maybe they should not have offered it if they could not handle it, or have CLEARLY STATED WHAT "LIFETIME" is.

Hell CP-E should have a NOTICE FOR STANDBACK USERS to let them know that there standback is not suppprted, not warrantable, and if they have a problem, buy a cobb product instead, because cp-e doesnt wanna touch there own product.

I dont care if cp-e stopped making the standback, if they dont/cant replace it or provide service, they should at LEAST have a standback disclaimer on there website for problems like this.

--------

I buy lifetime warranty tools from snap on/mac tools...they are fucking LIFETIME WARRANTY, not "oh we dont make that wrench anymore"

Then they GIVE YOU A NEW ONE FREE OF CHARGE when they dont have your old wrench, they do this TO KEEP THE CUSTOMER COMING BACK.

-------_
I bought a fuckin backpack with a "lifetime warranty" and i had an issue 6 YEARS after purchase...called up CLEVELAND GOLF/OGIO

They said "our lifetime warranty is 35 years, we can send you a new bag, yours has been discontinued for 4 years" sure enough i got a brand new $300 snowboard bag to replace my cheapo $150 one. GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE.

The problem was 100% wear on my end an they replaced it with a 2x the cost bag NO PROBLEM...TO KEEP ME THE CUSTOMER HAPPY AND COMING BACK.

---------

My keurig coffee maker had problems, with a limited 1 year warranty, the company SENT A NEW UPGRADED unit FREE OF CHARGE because they knew of issues with my unit.
GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Cp-e should update the website with disclaimers so people dont get te wrong idea with "lifetime warranty"

Just to keep the customer happy, bite the fuckin bullet jesus christ, the community will respect you alot more. But then again cp-e does not rely on the mazdaspeed community at all like some other's do..so they dont really care when it comes down to it...

A hard part is not the same as any sort of electronic. So what you're saying is that if I bought a Standback, and put it on a shelf for 30 years and then hooked it up and it didn't work I should get a full refund just because the plastic and parts haven't disintegrated? Lifetime doesn't mean for the rest of your life or forever and ever. It's the lifetime of the product line.

That being said, I would be ticked off too if I had one and it kept breaking. I'm not saying this guy has no cause to be pissed, I would be too. I'm just saying that jumping at a company for not instantly providing a new replacement for an electronic module they don't make anymore is a bit over the top. I'm sure they won't post the amount here but if they're giving a legit discount on an AP, AND offering a free harness to troubleshoot his problem, I'd say that's trying to remedy the situation.

Lastly, I do completely agree that cp-e should just bite the bullet on this one for service reasons. I'd imagine either way it will be worked out in private so standback owners don't bombard them with demands.

You're all over the place. Obviously they honored the warranty once when it malfunctioned before. They're trying to help you troubleshoot the problem. If you want them to remedy the problem via the standback then work with them. If you're looking for a refund then I think the discount they offered you for an accessport is plenty more than the product is worth after 2 years of use.
Eitherway, PM me and maybe I can help work something out that both parties will be happy with.
