(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score ![]() As with most of our products, we /really/ try to do things differently, and these mounts are no exception. They're special not only because of the tremendous engineering effort that went into designing them and sophisticated the manufacturing techniques, but also because the part is functional and attractive. This upgraded engine mount set really has no compromises, and I'm excited to share a little information about what went into making these suckers. First, I should mention that this project was all created in CAD space. We used a very sophisticated Faro Arm (Introduction - The Platinum FaroArm) which is more or less a mobile coordinate measuring machine. We can "map out" the engine bay, obstructions and all, and then design the mount around the obstructions in CAD space with tolerances of about +/-0.005" (on the high side). You can see one of our employees below mapping out the engine bay before he begins any work designing the mount: Once we imported the digitized information into our CAD software we were able to start designing the mount. Interestingly, we were able to glean information from the Faro data that may have otherwise been very difficult to see. This is part of the reason why the Faro Arm is so invaluable. Here's what I mean: Above is a CAD drawing of our tranny side mount. The first feature that's immediately noticeable is the fact that the top plate isn't parallel with the bushing. When we digitized the frame, we found that it isn't exactly level, and it actually sweeps in three dimensions. Because we could accurately measure this complex angle, we could model the top plate to exactly contour it for a precise fitment. That would be very difficult to do correctly with traditional measuring tools, and neglecting this feature would likely result in poor fitment. We also tried very hard to make the stock mount consistent with ours in an effort to keep this a true bolt-on part. The factory tranny mount has a very gentle bend in it which is difficult to replicate, but is present on our mount. This maintains the stock battery tray location, and if we deleted the jog bend the battery tray would have to be modified in order to clear the turbo inlet pipe. The top plate is also slotted to allow for easier installation. Here's one more shot of the tranny mount from a different angle (The red plate represents the top of the transmission, orange are the factory studs): Notice how large the bushing is. We use an oversized 2.5" O.D., 3.5" long EPDM bushing, which is important for strength and reducing vibration. The combination of our EPDM bushing and a relatively low durometer will provide the best compromise between ride comfort and motor movement. The matching side mount is pictured above. Notice that the bushing is 'facing' the same way as the driver's side bushing. This is critical for the engine mounts to work properly. If the bushing were turned 90°, the natural motion of the engine swinging would put a great deal of stress on the mount itself, as opposed to allowing the bushing to control engine movement. This is how the factory mounts work, so ours follow the same recipe. Also notice the beefy gussets for added rigidity. We're pretty proud of our engine mounts, and as such they're going to be proudly displaying the cp-e logo. All parts are CNC machined and laser cut for the highest quality pre-welding fitment. But wait, there's more! We also wanted to give you a glimpse as to how these mounts will be manufactured. These mounts will be welded using our twin robotic welding cell. We prefer to use robots to do our welding because they're so consistent. CAD drawings are great, but if you don't manufacture the product to the engineering drawing's specifications, then you can't expect the part to perform as the CAD model expects. For instance, if a human employee has a bad day and rushes a weld bead, well then mount may fail prematurely because of that. So we take the human error out of the most critical steps of the manufacturing process to ensure the parts are consistent, and perform as we expect them to. Our first project that utilized automated welding in production were the MS3 TowPlates. You can see in the YouTube video below one of the welding robots laying down a MIG weld bead: The side engine mounts will be manufactured using the same process, so all of the welds will be perfectly formed and placed precisely each and every time. And none of the components will be cut by a human either. All of the components will either be laser cut, CNC machined, or CNC bent, so again all of the components will have nearly perfect fitment. Even the welding jigs will be CNC machined, which makes this a 100% CAD based project. That's special because we've taken the majority human error out of the production. We can't wait to get one of these on a car, and I'm hesitant to provide and any estimates or price points. It will be soon though as the design process is finished. If you guys have any burning questions please post them up! |

| Not Ranked : 0 score The fact you guys are using a faro cmm is enough for me to become excited about these mounts. Thank you for being a company that has a great attitude about the details! So are you using Solidworks for your CAD package? The shadow effect on the assemblies looks like it.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Jordan, Can you comment on your decision to orient the main bolt? It's similar to PTP, and perpendicular to Medieval's design. |
