Default Lifetime warranty?

So after spending $70 to send my downpipe back to cp-e, they tell me it's too old, they don't have any equipment to cut the cat out and delete it. They can reweld the bellmouth but it'll probably crack again. My only option is to buy the new design downpipe for 50% off or they just send mine back and I eat the cost of sending it there even though I was told if it couldn't be fixed, it would be replaced.

Someone, please tell if I'm just being petty....

UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Josh, we are in agreement with a resolution. The downpipe as no longer being in production, is no longer under warranty. The cracks on the bellmouth will be fixed under whats left of the warranty as that just takes a weld. Due to the age/design of the downpipe, the jig and alignment equipment are no longer in use. There was some missed communication/misunderstanding initially of the details in regards to tooling and equipment needed. Replacing the cat with a straight pipe without using a jig could result in a product that they could not stand behind and could not warranty or could not guarantee fitment back on the vehicle. I feel after the conversation CP-e has stood behind their warranty and made it right, even beyond a discontinued product.

Just tapa it in.

Well if it does have a lifetime warranty and it covers cracks, and weld breaks and now they cant fix it. They should indeed send you a new replacement. I mean 50% is nice but i believe it this is your first warranty claim it should be free or more like 80% off.

Are you the original purchaser? If so, do you have the invoice?

I personally keep a folder of all paper receipts along with digital copies on my external hard drive from all the vendors I do business with, not just CP-E.

If you are not the original purchaser, or you cannot prove that you are, a 50% cut on price towards a new unit is a very favorable option for you.

This is the second time I've had to send back for the cat going bad. This time the cat rattles inside. Their techs suggested I use something break up the cat to be catless. Last I knew, they used spun metallic cats. I can't imagine that'll just break apart.

Just tapa it in.

IMO a clogged cat would be a "wear item", but that doesn't look like the issue. Cracked bellmouth and loose cat should both be workmanship / material defects - but like @SilverDemon; said - are you the original purchaser?

If so, they should replace it with the equivalent part (the redesign if they no longer have the old one), and if not, I'd take their offer for 50% off and express some gratitude.

Same here, was eyeballing a Flex V2 RMM when I BNR upgrade in a few weeks. I'm sure we're not the only ones expecting a clarification before making purchases.

My personal warranty experience hasn't been the best with cpe. Out of any company I've ever dealt with, they were probably one of the worst.

I like their products, but I hate their handling of warranty issues.

It honestly wouldn't have been that big of a deal if they just said up front, there is no warranty anymore. I could have spent the $70 to have a local shop weld the cracks, and delete the cat. I opted to go through cp-e to keep the warranty and their quality. Now I have a bum downpipe, out $70 for shipping, and will still have to pay to get fixed locally.

Just tapa it in.

Yeah, I don't have time for bullshit, when my cat went bad I paid $50 locally to have the pipe cut and the cat removed, the bend near the bellmouth makes it impossible to gut the cat with a rebar.

Looking back, a better deal would be to buy a catless ebay DP with a v-band and the flex section near the top, get a separate cat and have it welded near the bottom where it is less likely to fail over time.

Interesting that they have a "lifetime" warranty but are not honoring it. I will not be purchasing anything more from cp-e based on this experience. I cannot afford for their workmanship to be to blame, and they deny my warranty claim.

Apparently the "lifetime" in "lifetime warranty" is for the lifetime of the model number/revision of the part.

Even the warranty wording on their website is full of "fuck off" as you can see here:

cp-e™ prides itself on the production of quality parts. All of our parts come with a lifetime warranty against defects in workmanship or materials for the original purchaser for the production lifetime of the product. This lifetime warranty does not cover non cp-e™ parts. Any claims with non cp-e™ products should be filed with the manufacturing company. Claims on some products, such as engine blocks, cylinder heads, and SAFEseal™, will be taken on a case-by-case basis as these are considered wear items. You must provide us with a copy of your invoice as proof of purchase. To submit a warranty claim, send us a message.

I like this portion the most. Item that has a known defect? Discontinue that fucker so we don't have to warranty it.

Lifetime Warranty:*not really "lifetime" though, because we can discontinue something and you're fucked.*

When I responded I did not know this was an older, discontinued part. Having said that, how many other performance part manufactures have any type of warranty? For instance TurboXS, I owned several of their products when I first got into modding this car. I just skimmed over their website, guess what? Unless I missed it I could not find any warranty at all, just this little disclaimer hid on the website

Standard Return Policy
Return for refund: 30 days

Merchandise under this Standard Return Policy may be returned within 30 days of the original invoice date for a refund. All returns require an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) number. All items returned for a refund are subject to a 15% restocking fee. Due to the dangerous and stressful nature of racing vehicles, no returns are allowed on installed, opened or used products.

Failure to comply with the return policy will result in refusal of items sent back for return. Many manufacturers offer additional warranty coverage. With regard to such, you should contact the manufacturer of your item directly for information regarding eligibility and specific Terms and Conditions.

Cancellation

In the event you would like to cancel your order. You will need to contact us by 2:30 pm eastern standard time the same day you placed the order. This is to ensure that the order is not shipped and your money will be refunded.
Source: Return Policy - TurboXS

Here is a case of a company (CP-E) that has a warranty spelled out, and they have tried to make it right and offered to mark 50% off of a new unit, long after the model you have has been discontinued.

Actually MagnaFlow has an amazing warranty policy: https://www.magnaflow.com/wideopen/warranty.asp

I had a muffler rust through a bit, they asked me to send a picture with proof it was my car, and at their expense they sent me all brand new parts. No fighting with them or any back and forth emails trying to get support.

Just from my past experience, CPE put more effort in trying not to warranty the faulty parts than owning up and replacing it. I just overall had a bad warranty experience.

Warantee or not what kind of company that manufactures downpipes doesn't "have any equipment" to do this fix? Do little fucking elves come by each night and spin straw into parts for them? I hope you at least got a reach around.

Here is some reading from an after market manufacture.....probably the most well known name in the hot rod world, been in business for 60 plus years. Try and get Edelbrock to offer 50% off of a new product years after the discontinuation of the original product.

The mere fact that CP-E is extending a sizable discount to help you out speaks volumes on how dedicated they are to the Mazda community.

For those in this thread that state they will not buy from CP-E because of this, get a life and enter the real world of modding a car. Most of the responsibility falls on the consumer, it's like this across platforms and genre of hot rodding.

There are quite a few "fuck offs" in the first paragraph of Edelbrock's warranty. Who gets to determine how it is installed properly, and what is defined as normal use?

General Warranty

It is the constant endeavor of the Edelbrock, LLC to give our customers the highest quality products obtainable. Edelbrock warrants each new product, except Edelbrock Crate Engines, Performer Series Carburetors, Race Division Parts, Stainless Steel Tubular Exhaust Systems and Edelbrock IAS Shock Absorbers which are warranted separately, to be free from defects in both workmanship and material for a period of one (1) year from the date of purchase, provided that the product is properly installed, subjected to normal use and service and that the product is not modified or changed in any way, nor damaged because of negligence by customer or installer or used for racing or competition purposes. Our warranty service and repair facility is located at 2700 California Street, Torrance, California 90503. Customers who believe they have a defective product should either return it to the dealer from which it was purchased or ship it directly to Edelbrock, LLC along with proof of purchase and a complete description of the problem. The product must be returned freight prepaid. If a thorough inspection of the product by the factory indicates defects in workmanship or material, our sole obligation shall be to repair or replace the product. Warranty covers only the product itself and not the cost of installation or removal.

Performer Series® Carburetor and Race Division Parts Warranty

Edelbrock, LLC warrants all Performer Series Carburetors and Race Division Products to be free from defects in material and workmanship. This warranty is extended to the original consumer/purchaser and has a duration of ninety (90) days from date of original purchase by such consumer, provided that the products are properly installed, subjected to normal use and service, is not modified or changed in any way. Remanufactured carburetor units are warranted for a period of thirty (30) days. This warranty is void if any Carburetor or Race Division Products are used for race or competition purposes. Any implied warranty determined to be applicable is limited in duration to the duration of this warranty. Some states do not allow limitation on how long an implied warranty is so the above limitation may not apply in your state. Should a part become defective, it should be returned to the original selling dealer or shipped freight prepaid to Edelbrock, LLC. It must be accompanied with the sales receipt and a clear description of the problem. Edelbrock, LLC reserves the right to replace or repair the defective part and return said part freight prepaid. This warranty covers the replacement or repair of the product only and does not cover the cost of removal and installation.

Thunder Series AVS® Carburetor

Edelbrock, LLC warrants all Thunder Series AVS Carburetor Products to be free from defects in material and workmanship. This warranty is extended to the original consumer/purchaser and has a duration of one (1) year from date of original purchase by such consumer, provided that the products are properly installed, subjected to normal use and service, is not modified or changed in any way. Remanufactured carburetor units are warranted for a period of thirty (30) days. This warranty is void if any Thunder Series AVS Carburetor Products are used for race or competition purposes.

Edelbrock IAS®, Performer Shock & Strut,VS-3, Shock Absorbers Warranty

Edelbrock, LLC warrants each new Edelbrock IAS, Performer or VS-3 shock absorber including strut applications to be free from factory defects (except for finish and shock boot). This warranty is extended to the original consumer/purchaser and has a duration of one (1) year from date of original purchase by such consumer provided that the product is properly installed, subjected to normal use and service and that the product is not modified or changed in any way, nor damaged because of negligence by customer or installer, or used for racing or competition purposes. Should a part become defective, it should be returned to the original selling dealer or shipped freight prepaid to Edelbrock, LLC. It must be accompanied with the sales receipt and a clear description of the problem. This warranty is void on shocks used in racing applications except for known, proven defects in material or workmanship. Edelbrock, LLC reserves the right to replace or repair the defective part and return said part freight prepaid. This warranty covers the replacement or repair of the product only and does not cover the cost of removal and installation. Damage or defects resulting from collision, improper installation, off-road use, road hazards or racing, are not covered by this warranty.

Tubular Exhaust System, Patented Chambered Mufflers, and Shorty Headers Warranty

Edelbrock, LLC guarantees each new Tubular Exhaust System, patented Chambered Muffler and Shorty Header to be free from defects in materials and workmanship, including tube cracks and welds for a period of one (1) year from date of purchase, provided that the product is properly installed, subjected to normal use and service and that the product is not modified or changed in any way, negligence by customer or installer, or used for racing or competition purposes. NOTE: Engines that generate exhaust tubing temperatures above 1000° F will cause discoloration, peeling and possible burn out, thereby voiding this warranty. Should a part become defective it should be returned to the original selling dealer or shipped freight prepaid to Edelbrock, LLC. It must be accompanied with the sales receipt and a clear description of the problem. Edelbrock, LLC reserves the right to replace or repair the defective part and return said part freight prepaid. This warranty covers the replacement or repair of the product only and does not cover the cost of removal and installation. Nor does it cover the cost of customer applied aftermarket coatings. Damage or defects resulting from collision, improper installation, off-road use, road hazards, internal rust, discoloration caused by excessive engine temperature, or exposure to alkali-based chemicals are not covered by this warranty. This product is only to be cleaned with soap and water. External rust is covered on stainless steel units only.

EnduraShine® Finish

With proper care and cleaning, your EnduraShine parts will continue to look good and keep their high gloss shine for years. Never clean your EnduraShine parts with solvents or carburetor cleaners of any kind. Use of these cleaners will dull the luster and will remove the coating. Never use solvents or carburetor cleaners when rebuilding your EnduraShine carburetor. Do not use paper towels to wipe or clean your EnduraShine parts; always clean your EnduraShine parts using mild soap, water or non solvent cleaners such as Simple Green. Do not use a chrome polish or a scratch remover that is not clear coat safe. For best results, a high quality polish such as Novus No. 2 Fine Scratch Remover, Meguiars or Mothers Plastic Lens Cleaner should be used. Any cleaning product used on your EnduraShine parts MUST be clear coat safe or developed for the cleaning of acrylic coatings. We suggest applying any automotive wax coat after cleaning to help to seal the surface and protect the finish. Use of abrasive or solvent cleaners will void your manufacturer’s warranty.

Conditional Warranty

All Pro-Flo 2, Pro-Flo XT or Multi-Point Fuel Injection Systems, Crate Engines, Turbo Systems, E-Force Supercharger Systems, Cylinder Heads and QwikData 2 Systems maintain a conditional warranty. These products must not be returned to the dealer; they should be sent to Edelbrock only. The product must be returned freight prepaid. If a thorough inspection of the product by the factory indicates defects in workmanship or material, our sole obligation on all products shall be to repair or replace the product. Warranty covers only the product itself and not the cost of installation or removal.

Off-Highway Use

Many of the parts described or listed herein are designed for off-highway use only. Installation of “off-highway” parts may impair your vehicle’s emission control system performance, these parts should not be installed on any vehicle used on any street or highway. Any installation as such could adversely affect the warranty coverage for an on-street or highway vehicle and violates state or federal emission laws.

I don't see "lifetime" anywhere on edlebrocks warranty.

As I said, had they told me this up front, it would be annoying but I would have fixed locally. Instead, I was originally told by Chunie it would be covered, then confirmed again by Trip. So I drop $70 to ship it back... And all they can say is "I apologize, we'll cover shipping back to you."

Edit: last I checked, they still produce a downpipe for the first gen speed 3. Updated revision? Sure. When Mazda swaps turbos out under warranty with revisions to they don't charge the customer half price for replacement revision.

Again, replacement with new wasn't the goal, merely deleting the cat that has been a problem since I've had the downpipe. And an engineering company not have the means to do that is just lazy.

Just tapa it in.

You really need to understand how this production stuff works. When a part is obsolete, everything that has to do with that part is obsolete, fixtures, components and brackets. How do you think they will replace the cat with out the fixture? Once the pipe is cut to remove the cat, and with out the car there is no way to index the pipe correctly.

If I was a betting person, CP-E would probably give you a new cat.

Exactly what I meant in red.

"Lifetime" is the run of the part at the manufacture, this is common practice on most everything that you purchase.

How long ago did you talk to Chunie? If I remember correctly he has not worked there for quite some time now.

I would also like to hear all the facts about this down pipe

I understand they dont have their jig setup anymore to mass produce this downpipe. i wouldnt expect them too. I would also imagine unless the bends have all changed, it shouldnt be a far cry from the new design being that its still from the same vehicle. i can also assure you my local shop wont have the production jig either, but can still get the job done. is it as easy, No, can it be done, yes.
I cannot find the emails from Chunie as it appears i had setup a pop3 email client and they were downloaded and deleted from Gmail's server, but the email string with Trip started in November, ended in December which he also confirmed the downpipe would be fixed under warranty. With the holidays i didnt have a extra $70 to blow on shipping a downpipe across country, so shipping was delayed.

Downpipe Facts:
Purchased and installed in 2007

Pulled in 2009 to send back for the cat to be replaced as it was causing a checkengine light (was told this was happening becuase they didnt expect the EGT our coars produce)

2011 the check engine light came back on, at this point i wasnt too concerned anymore since this was the 2nd time i didnt have to go through emissions yet.

In march of 13 is when i noticed there was a crack on the welds on the bellmouth. I had sent CP-e a pm on here about the crack and the cat and they said it would be covered but to email support. I can only assume the email with Chunie started then. At that time I no longer had the stock downpipe to put back on the car so i could remove the Cp-e and send it back and i informed Chunie of this at the time.

In november, @Enki; let me use his downpipe so i could remove mine and send it off. this is when i had emailed support again since i got no response from Chunies email and got Trip. He again said it wouldnt be a problem, but would have to check if there would be a charge to have the cat deleted. I had told him while talking to Chunie that it shouldnt be a problem at which point he said that they would honor that under warranty.
the downpipe was sent back on Feb 11th.

Here we are today.

I think that is everything.

A compenent local shop could swap out a cat without CPEs fixtures, jigs, etc. It's not that hard to make a couple of marks, a couple of cuts, and a couple of welds all the while keeping the indexing straight. Just sayin...

Just saying....they (the local shop) will have the car... CP-E will not have the car to index the pipes...

Whether it's right or not for them to replace it, if they were smart they would at this point. The last thing you want is a customer that's pissed off because you didn't handle a warranty claim. If they played their cards right, they should offer him a downpipe at cost and call it good at that. They aren't losing money, and he would be happy.

That'll never happen. This isn't a legitimate lifetime warranty, it's a "Lifetime Warranty...read the fine fuck off print".. lol

Thanks for the facts, I appreciate your honesty.

Shortly after that pipe was produced (version 1) it was replaced with version 2. I believe the time frame was about a year or so. This was probably due to not being able to keep up with the demand of the machine cut flanges. This started the cast bell mouth version, which is produced at a casting facility at a much faster rate to keep up with the demand.

By the time you had the first issue of the cat, the down pipe was already discontinued, but CP-E still warrantied the pipe.

It does not look like anything was done in 2011, but in 2013 (4 years after the part is obsolete) you want a replacement. I can't speak about what was promised with Chunie and Trip, but there is a reason they do not work there anymore. At this point I feel that CP-E has went out of their way to make things right with you, whether or not you want to take advantage of the discount is up to you.

You might want to remove the email from the forum, there is a confidentiality clause on all communications with CP-E.

You never answered my question. Was the part that was replaced by Magnaflow a discontinued part?

CP-E has went above the call of customer service by repairing a wear item after the part is obsolete, and on top of that offered a huge discount on a replacement.

Exactly what part of the warranty did they not honor? The offer on the new pipe is below their manufacturing cost....so I am not sure what you are getting at. They (CP-E) has lost money at this point on the entire transaction trying to keep the customer happy.

If you read what I said I didn't say whether they honored it or not. I'm saying sometimes things should be done in good faith.

Didn't handle a warranty claim ... in red for your viewing pleasure.

The fact is they did handle the claim, even after the part was discontinued, and offered a replacement below their manufacturing cost.

Well do you think this guys going to go around saying "cp-e didn't handle my expired warranty claim?" Or will he possibly leave one word out of that sentence?

That is determined by the type of person he is. He seems like an honest person, and I doubt that now this is on an open forum he will have a hard time saying anything to the contrary.

I feel after the conversation CP-e has stood behind their warranty and made it right, even beyond a discontinued product.

mods, i dont see a need to keep the thread open beyond this point.
