![]() We measure horsepower using a dynamometer, which is typically accompanied by a cooling fan. So when we compare the Nano to the Xcel, we'll have a proper fan blowing fresh air into the engine bay. In that case, we expect the products to make more or less the same power. On the street, you can't bring a dyno fan with you, so when you come to a stop, the Nano will suck up more hot air than the Xcel, and consequently make less power. We're not making the Nano because we think it's better than our Xcel, we're making it because people want it. Does that make sense?

| Not Ranked : 0 score Um, I wouldn't sell a car to buy the exact same car again....that is the position on the intake. He does present a good idea though. I could make a pretty good profit on the cobb intake if I sold it now. However, it may not be comptable with any AP OTS tunes...that remains to be seen. If it is, the cobb sri value will plummet as people will just pick this one up. I think I'll be safe and stick with what works for right now. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Dry filter?? I hope so. I would never use an oiled filter, Cobb should have a dry flter option IMO also. I am sticking with OEM box until I can get a SRI with straightener, dry filter, non metal cool air box option. So far there isnt one.

When we started this company we originally packaged oiled filters with our cold air intake kits. Then there was a lot of noise about oiled filters contaminating mass air sensors, so we decided to switch to dry fow filters. We've been selling aFe's DryFlow variant for a little over a year now, and we're considering once again going back to oiled filters. We recently started communicating with a well known filter manufacturer in the US. They've been forwarding us a lot of technical data regarding their filters, and so far as we can tell their oiled filter is far and away the best filter on the market at the moment. The oiled filter does in fact look to filter solid particles better than a dry flow, and also flow better to boot. The more we look into the whole "MAF contamination problem," the more it looks like dealers trying to weasel their way out of warranty work back when EFI was new technology. How many times have you guys been told that an aftermarket exhaust makes turbos smoke because the free-flowing system "overheats the turbo?" ![]() K&N Mass Air Flow Testing Findings We're going to look into this further, but we wanted to get your input on the matter. So let me ask you guys, if we were to present 3rd-party empirical data that proves without a doubt that oiled filters are better than dry flow, would you all consider making the switch? If need be I'll start a new thread for this topic.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Thanks for the filter info--I've always been attracted to dryflow simply from an ease of maintenance standpoint, but when it comes down to it, if a certain filter flows much better than others, I'll take it regardless of whether it's dry/oiled. ...any update on the timeframe for launch of the nano? |

But the K&N data does not impress me, they produce an oiled filter, they would not publish data negative to their cause. It would have to be independent 3rd party data, that compared flow rate and filtration efficiency of 2 identically sized filters (dry brand and oiled brand) compared under standardized conditions. Tests I have seen in the past showed oiled flow better but dry filter better. Therefore the optimum solution was to use the biggest dry filter that would fit in the space available. This is from my powerstroke diesel days. Why not have a dry or wet filter option?? Shouldnt be too hard to do, let the market decide for real.

Flow and filtration are opposing sides. No filter = best flow, worst filtration, you will dust your engine in no time. Very best filtration flows badly, no performance but doesnt let any particulates through. The key is finding the best balance. The best flowing filter, without destroying your engine in a reasonable time period because of unfiltered contaminents.

Overall, I think that I like the plastic design of Cobb better for heat reasons. That is why I think I will stick with my Cobb likely. But, I want an airbox and Cobb doesn't have immediate plans for an airbox for the 6. So, I dunno...

Just a personal observation on filtering: I've used oiled filters before on ATV's in conditions with huge amounts of incredibly fine dust. After as little as 50 miles in these conditions (with a properly oiled filter), there was visible dust accumulation on the velocity stacks inside the airbox feeding the carbs. That said... I don't plan to drive my MS3 in the Baja 1000, so I'd be content either way. Since the filter is responsible for the intake's velocity stack on this design, that should be a key factor in the filter selection process.

| Not Ranked : 0 score AFE Dryflow? Never heard of them. I've heard nothing but amazing things about AEM's dryflow. I've had K&N and had oil get sucked in from not letting it dry properly. I don't want to go down that road again honestly.

| Not Ranked : 0 score AFE is the filter company that CP-e has been using all along for oiled filters and I think they started using them for dry filters as well. Yeah, this is the problem with oiled filters, not the way they come from the factory but users over-oiling them, etc.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Yeah I over-oiled it and it didn't take long till it happened. I wasn't happy with it at all. And I never knew how often to clean it so I think I cleaned it 3 times in a year. That was a total pita to take the wheel off each time and pull the plastic off (on my old car).

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score This is great feedback guys. It seems like most people here are open to either type, assuming there is data to back up the claims.
We'll do exactly what you suggested though. We plan on running third party tests to show which filters perform best, because like our customers we want to only run the best products out there. So if oiled filters do perform better in terms of either filtration or flow, then we'll have to seriously consider one over the other. On the other hand, if our customers feel strongly one way or another then we'll absolutely listen!
I think once we post some data the opinions will become more polarized

| Not Ranked : 0 score You guys are getting the filter company names mixed up ... AFE makes oiled filters, AEM makes the dry ones. Also, here's "independent" tests from AEM's website: http://www.aempower.com/files/dryflo...iraid9inch.pdf
