(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score ok, my bumper is hideous. i figure i'll document what i'm doing here. i'm sure it'll turn out horribly. before pics ![]() ![]() it's got cracks, holes, and stress marks. i just took it off and started hand sanding it. this is the first time i'm going to do any kind of remote "body" work. i painted the gas lid and i'm pleased with results at least, but there were no paint/surface imperfections with it. the bumper is a different story. what do i fill the holes with? bondo? body filler? edited to add a pic of the way the gas cap came out...that's literally with 5 coats of clear. wet sanded with 1500 between the last two coats. eventually, i'll polish it. ![]() at night after the rain ![]() 10/28 edit ![]() bumper's obviously off the car. going at it with some 80 grit, idk if it's too coarse or what. i'm painting everything, so i'm sanding everything. use another finer grit before primer? idk. maybe some 120? i gotta figure out how to use this body filler. edit ![]() holes are outlined in red. i got some adhesive body patch and i still have some body filler. i will start with that stuff tomorrow. 10/30 edit ![]() i really need to figure out wtf i'm doing and get a real camera. hahahha 11/2 edit ![]() more filling and more sanding and more cleaning. i found out the hard way that all the spots that were sanded down to the actual bumper (not paint) need to be filled. so that's what i'm doing. 11/4 edit ![]() filled and sanded more. i think i got it to the point of being able to prime. went 220 all the way around. over the bondo and over the parts that are just painted. we'll see how it comes out. ![]() first coat of primer on after the first coat of primer dried, i noticed two tiny holes the size of a pin head...ugh, fml. got out the body filler and filled them. after it dried, i sanded that area with 220. then i wetsanded everything with 600. then i wetsanded everything with 1000. i dried it and sprayed another coat of primer. ![]() 11/6 this is how the car sat as of this morning... ![]() i'm gonna take the bumper back off and basically start from scratch. sand a whole bunch and do more body filler. it's not up to snuff. ![]() edit - 11/8 sanded the bondo down with 60 and 80 and then 120. went at it with the primer again. looks ok... ![]() edit 11/9 ![]() sanded, filled some more...gonna sand a bit more and put another coat of primer on. probably gonna leave it be for a day, sand and then apply black. edit 11/10 ![]() ![]() ![]() bumper has it's first coat of black on it. the first can of black paint i had was doing that annoying shit where the spray pattern is fucked up and it was spraying dots everywhere. cap clogged? idk. new can of paint went on fine. the coat is way too thick, but whatever. might sand it tonight, might wait until tomorrow. still looks a hell of a lot better than before. edit 11/11 wetsanded with 400. gonna let it dry and then apply another coat. ![]() another coat of paint ![]() edit 11/12 took the bumper outside...this is what it looks like ![]() wet sanded with 800, it currently looks like this ![]() i gotta go get more black paint to lay on another coat. bumper back on the car Last edited by phillyb; 12-23-2010 at 09:58 AM. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score use a guide coat nigro before painting so u can spot high spots..... spray a light primer and use a guide coat and re sand ...if u want great results only after the bumper is nice and smooth (and straight....contoured) then u paint after another coat of primer

| Not Ranked : 0 score Like Lenny said, light gray primer with a couple good coats, then a dark gray or black dusting for a guide coat. You don't want to cover, just enough to give you an indication of high/low/imperfections when you are sanding. If you're rattle canning, you might want to go a little finer than the 220 - down to 320 or 400 maybe.
