Default aaronc5z's C5 Z06 Build

Picked this up about a month ago now. 2003 Corvette Z06 with 35k miles. Bone stock other than an iPod adapter into the factory headunit.

So far I have added:

-Vararam cold air intake
-EFILive Autocal w/ remote tune support from Patrick Guerra / Guerra Group
-Kooks 1 7/8" long tube headers w/ catted 3" X-pipe is on the way (couple week backorder)

Have a Tail of the Dragon trip planned for this summer, so next up on the mod plan is some better seats (Corbeau A4 most likely) and a better shifter setup (stock C6 setup or MGW). Would love to get both of those before the trip, but we'll see if it pans outs. Should have probably got that stuff first, but I just couldn't resist the headers!

Long term stuff:

-More aggressive cam (possibly with set of ported heads to match)
-Possibly a bolt on S/C kit, but unlikely

Well, that's about it for now. I have just been enjoying it in the meantime.. can't wait to put those headers on.

$24,500 (35k miles at the time).

I came across here a really good post on corvette forum today that was spot on with prices (based on my experience anyways and seems like most others too). For a C5Z see below... add about 20k and you will be talking C6Z figures.

Moderate mileage ones (40-60K) in good condition, are going between 21-24K

High mileage ones (75K -100K) in fair condition are selling for about 17-20K.

Super High mileage ones (over 100K) in fair condition are selling for between 13-17K.

All of these prices assumes clean car fax.

I was kinda torn on seats between the A4s in leather or microsuede, but I am set on the suede now. Good compromise between looks and function (grippy).

(not my car)

For shifter I'm still on the fence.... the stock C6 setup will be way better for sure and pretty cheap, just not sure if I want to spend about double for the MGW. MGW I think is more in line with Miata shifter or S2000-- a bit 'notchy', but super precise.

MGW: Corvette Short Throw Shifter

They are very fun cars in stock trim! Everything about them is better!

If those are current prices, I found my pop a steal. '02 Yellow Z06, 7k miles, never driven in the rain, fully stock, and clean carfax for 25k. Just reached 12k miles (purchased 3 years ago).

Now go put some sticky tires on it and go AutoX it!

Nice c5z! I just picked up a CPO 2010 1LT C6 with 19k on it two months ago for a summer car. It came with aftermarket tires/wheels and a Corsa sport exhaust as well as cross drilled discs. Got in touch with the previous owner on a forum and found out it also has Z06 shocks, sways, and SS brake lines. He also had a SC/meth/cam setup pushing 730whp but that's another story. Yeah, got a comp/leakdown test after I found that out lol.

My initial plan was to get a c5z, but around where I live (WI), ones with 50k on them list for $23-25k and I had trouble paying that much for a 10 year old car. I've got a set of kooks 1 7/8" headers sitting in my garage, but I've actually got them up for sale right now because I'm not sure I want to void the powertrain warranty this year yet, and also not 100% sure if I want to stay on this platform/car and build it out. We'll see how long I can stare at those headers. My initial plan was headers/tune, pay it off, then SC it. I'm having a lot of fun with it stock though; it's much more powerful than my speed and the first RWD and high hp NA car I have owned so it's a different world.

Cool to see another vette owner on here. I was starting to feel left out with the 5.0 fever that's been sweeping the place lately lol.

I really want to get a chace to autoX it and hopefully run it at RA this year so I can learn how to handle RWD, I've taken it to the strip once, but I'm very new to drag racing/driving stick/driving fast so I only managed at 12.8@112. Hopefully I will get back there again at least once this summer.

You definitely got a steal!

The tires are basically brand new on it (~300 tread wear summer tires, I can't recall what exactly), but once they are gone I will probably be picking up some NT05s all around or it, not too many good options for the stock sizes.

I have my eyes peeled though for a set of track wheels-- seems like a square setup is most popular (same size all around).

Nice car man. The SC route is pretty tempting... relatively cheap, reliable setup. All depends what you want to do with it. If you want to get into Autox or do some HPDE/track days then NA is the way to go- plenty of power and be able to flog on it all day without a worry. For 1/4 and general street car, S/C would be great, but I'm not really wanting to make a huge project out of it.

I got way into the building side of things on my last car (turbo built motor miata) and it began to feel like a never ending project and I never really got to enjoy driving it, so that is my objective with the C5Z-- enjoy it.

28 y/o, clean record, full coverage w/ 500 deductible, thru USAA- $433/6 months. For comparison my 2013 Tacoma is $353/month. Not too bad IMO. I didn't look into it, but it's less than the new C6s everyone says.

Damn, good acquisition man. I love the C5 Z06! I've always loved the way the rear glass drops down like that.

Also, those Corbeau's definitely make that interior look clean. I'd find a set and jump on them ASAP.

I have been thinking I might go with headers and a mild cam which would put me at 460ish whp. Then, later on, the cam would help if I do go the SC route. For now it's nice having a warranty that I can fall back on which is something I did away with on the speed a few months after owning it.

I'm 24, and insurance on the vette is actually less than my speed.

460 with headers and a cam... I have some serious LS3 envy lol.

Yeah, and with a more aggressive cam they can see ~500whp. There's a lot of guys on the stock block pushing 600+whp as well. The LS6 is considered a very bulletproof motor from what I have read though. The LS3 has oiling issues in very high-g turns, and several people have blown them up when tracking their LS3 with r-compound tires. Luckily I don't plan on getting that crazy at all lol.

So I kinda splurged in preparation for an upcoming tail of the dragon weekend trip.

Kooks 1 7/8" header + catted 3" x-pipe, Corbeau microsuede A4 seats +sliders, and MGW short shifter have been ordered and are on the way. All of them are on a PTP 2 weeks backorder, so we'll see if I ever get them before the trip, lol.

Got a bunch of crap planned for this weekend. Lots of fluid swaps/flushes: Redline trans fluid, Redline differential fluid, brake fluid, clutch fluid, coolant flush. Bought one of those "power bleeders".... curious to see how it works for this brake fluid flush.

Some goodies are starting to show up too:

Are you going to drop the pan on the tranny or just drain the fluid? Does it have a transmission filter? Those headers look nice, 4-1. I recently changed all the fluids on my 4x4. It was so much easier because i have 2 1/2 feet of room with the tires on the ground lol vs. my miata.

Just going to use the drain plug and drain out all I can. Haven't heard of a trans filter... thing only has 36k miles on it though.

I know what you mean about the fluid swaps... oil change is so easy on my Tacoma. I had to go buy wood last night so I can jack up the vette. Need 2x12s for each tire so I can fit the jack under the car, and then I need 2x6s to jack up the car with and place between the car and the jack stands. A lot of the bottom of the car is hydroformed aluminum, so you have to spread the load out or it can crack, apparently. What a PITA though.

I bought a set of pucks but have not installed them yet. I think using the cross members will be easiest for at home on jack stands etc...but I got the pucks for the when I use a lift on the car (headers install) to make it easy and safe.

As a side note, there is no "pan" to drop as it is a manual. And definitely no filter either.

Install was not bad at all. If you've done any research into headers, you've probably come across countless threads about how the install on Kooks is horrid- you have to remove half of the stuff on the engine, undo motor mounts and jack the motor up, etc. etc.

It's a little known fact that about a year ago, Kooks redesigned all of their headers. They have a video online of them slipping in their 2" primary version from the bottom with no issues. I got 1 7/8" and had similar experience. I got the car as high as I could in the air with my jackstands + single 2 x 6of wood-- bottom of car was ~18" from the floor. This was plenty for me to install both headers from the bottom. The only thing "extra" that you need to remove is a single ground strap wire on the driver side...1 bolt, lol.

I looked at/followed this guide and it's generally a nice reference to what sort of stuff you need to remove:

LS1Howto.com

The instructions that came with the Kooks were outdated and terrible-- I gave them feedback on it. But the actual product was very nice. I guess I did have one issue, but it seems I am the exception. Part of the X-pipe connection is a slip-fit, and one of the pipes connecting to the stock exhaust section wasn't "expanded" enough to fit over the x-pipe section. I was able to rent a pipe expander tool from auto parts store and continue the install with little drama.

I don't really have any installed pics, but everything fit well. One of the pipes was kinda close to the trans, but I spent all weekend up at the tail of the dragon and had no rubbing or contact issues.

You probably can't go wrong with any of the big name headers out there. The cheap ones have way too many fitment issues from what I saw....not worth rolling the dice IMO. Very happy with Kooks overall, I feel they were awesome for the price. It seems like American Racing may have the absolute best fit/finish, but you certainly pay extra for it. I like LG's super long primaries, but it seems in practice, there are really no advantages power wise. They also use slip fit for all connections- meh. Kooks was seem to be all around solid and you can get a great deal on them thru the vendors-- I went with Marylandspeed (great stuff to say about them as well... had a few week delay on parts, they let me know right away and gave me prompt updates).

Incase you're curious what open headers sounds like with the Kooks.... lol (I removed that bracket after I took the pic, not needed with Kooks).

Been busy the past few weeks with the car. Installed headers w/ x-pipe, MGW short shifter, and Corbeau A4 seats in microsuede. Also did a bunch of maintenance related junk: Redline trans fluid, Redline differential fluid, coolant flush, brake fluid flush, clutch fluid flush.

For the 4th of July weekend I went up to the Tail of the Dragon with a few speeds/MSFers here in the local area. Had a blast and the car worked flawlessly. Got 28 MPG on the drive back home too! Looking into doing an open track day at NOLA motorsports park in November.

Pics below. Took a video, but my phone has some weird constant autofocus issue going on which makes it really painful to watch. Guy behind me got video, but he had cam inside his car as well and said glare was a big issue... oh well.

Car looks beautiful. I was only looking for a yellow or a black car but that red is growing on me.

How's the power post headers? What kind of tires are you running and what are your impressions? I bought my car with 7 year old OEM GY F1 SC tires and get a lot of wheel hop on hard shifts into 2nd.

Yeah I just can't decide on what I should buy. Not sure if I want to buy a drag radial or pick up a super sticky street tire like the BF G-force Rival.

Definite power increase. I already had a tune before the headers (remote tune via EFI Live Autocal) and it was updated post headers as well. No real dyno figures or anything but my traction control system would hardly ever kick in before-- on 1-2 shift, that's about it. Now it will come on everytime I go WOT in first gear. More spinning on the 1-2 shift. Take that for what it's worth-- it's definitely noticeable and plenty of guys who have done before/after dyno to back it up (probably around 30 hp?).

Previous owner put on brand new tires not long before selling it. Michelin pilot sport PS2 up front and Continental ExtremeContact DW in the back. IIRC the michelins are 200 something tread wear and the DWs in the 300 range. They seem to work pretty well, but I am looking forward to burning thru them so I can put something more sticky on. I am planning on running Nitto NT05s all around (275 up front, 295 in back). I just like the idea of running the same tire all the way around and lots of guys have ran the NT05s to confirm the sizes won't cause any AH issues, etc.

GM ignition recall. Had nothing to do with corvettes. Just had to screw with him some how . The manliness of those extra 4 cylinders were just to much for us to bear.
