Default BobtailedSnail's LSx MS6 and N/T Nova

Decided to resurrect my account a few weeks back. Some of you know who I am. Not quite OG, but not a Noob.

Trip down memory lane:
Learned a ton from this place when I first got my MS6 about 6 years ago. I built my first top mount kit from what I learned here. A few years back I got the idea of doing a compound turbo build on the 6, ended scraping that idea. Turbo tech was advancing and undermined the purpose of the build.
Ended up building the motor, doing a HX40 top mount setup, PI, etc. I lost interest and never got the car's tuned finished. I began parting the car out with what I considered a brilliant idea.

In the mean time:
I acquired a 69 Chevy Nova than had been sitting on a trailer for 3 years after the owner passed away, raced it one season then broke it down and changed the setup. Put new slicks on it
She ran a best of 9.77, all I did was change the oil in the motor. Lol. 468BBC with a glide

Pulled the motor and trans and sold it off

Acquired a new motor on CL and after a few weeks a decision was made to go Twin turbo. Sent the car to 16W Fabworks and Anthony knocked it out of the park on the turbo mounting and intercooler.

Got rid of the old school rake and slapped some radials on it.

The car's name is The Soul Shaker. It's a N/T car so don't ask what it runs lol.

On to the mazda's current state.
Used a small block I had in the shop since that and the LS are similar lengths.

A few things that will be need to be addressed to get a drivable car:
Steering
Trans Tunnel
Rear Diff in stock sub frame
clearancing the front sub frame some

The setup is going to be a 4.8L truck LS (LR4) twin Borg S366's and a POWERGLIDE. yeah you read that right an auto. Cobra 8.8 IRS. Purpose of the car is to have the outward appearance of any other BT ms6.

PowerGlide has been acquired.
Anthony at 16W already had a cobra 8.8 in his shop so I need to send him a rear subframe so he can make me some billet mounts to fix the 8.8 in the stock subframe.
Once I acquire the 4.8L I'll get my motor plates coming so I can mount it in the chassis. Then I can figure out steering. I have an idea to use a rack common in dirt track measures about 16-18" in length. If I can get it offset enough I should be able to make a passenger side tierod with enough bend in it to clear the oilpan/flexplate/converter lock to lock.

I hope this will counteract the lack of Speed in this car.

Keep in mind this is just mock up stuff until my friend pulls the LS from his truck. I had a bellhousing laying around to simulate the powerglide I can get my measurements so start cutting the firewall.

You're right. I figured if I didn't atleast mount the motor in the 6 it would waste away once I get the Nova running. Shouldn't be long on that though. I'll have oil pressure by February on the Nova.

Also concerning this build, I know you've been racing a while and most certainly in other platforms. Speak up if you see something off. The more minds putting in constructive criticism the better.

I've never done a swap like this, but from just general knowledge and what not everything looks to be in place and surprisingly gonna fit with some room to spare.

Are you gonna be driving this on the street at all, or just simply a fun track car that looks like an MS6? If so, have you considered anything besides the glide, or is that just the easiest fit and gearing for what your combo will be?

As far as autos go the glide is the smallest and would require the least amount of cutting to fit in the driveshaft tunnel. My goal here is to keep all of the interior including the center console w/shifter. All will be concealed under the boot.

In my county of DE all I need to do is pass emissions, no OBD2 checks so making it a street car will be easy. Going with a Glide over a TH400 or a 4L80e was really based on size and SLR (starting line ratio) with the limited tire I can fit in rear while keeping IRS. Street driving a glide with a factory 1.76 or Aftermarket 1.80 1st isn't vastly different than the TH400/80e 2.48, I have a TH400 in the Nova I can mock up for fitment if I decide to pursue that route at some point.

Default BobtailedSnail's LSx MS6 and N/T Nova

Had a collaboration on FB really quick with a few friends about CV axles. I called Mark Williams Ent. Friday and thy basically told me if I wasn't using Porsche 911 CV's I was wasting my time with a 1200hp IRS car. Then they proceeded to tell me a custom set of axles would cost me $5500. Decided to look elsewhere. Found a set of DSS cobra pro level axles that I think I can make work. I'll have to talk to DSS when they are open from their holiday leave.
http://www.driveshaftshop.com/domest...l-axle-hub-kit

Another friend mentioned someone else that I'll talk to at some point this week.
Just so everyone knows this project will move pretty quickly then slow down for a while. I need to finish my Nova and test with that for the good weather that's coming. But I rest assured that the LS and glide will be put in before I store the car and continue on the Nova.

Got in contact with G force sooner than I thought. They are gonna make something work for me. I'll probably have to send in my hubs to get them resplined to 31.

She's gonna rumble hard. Traction will be limited and on SBE I expect to be north of 600hp. Depends on how hard Nishan decides to push it. Once the bottom is built I expect north of 1000hp. Pretty much 9.0-8.90's

Ran up to Lancaster today to pick up a subframe and shot over to 16W so Anthony can work his magic on some mounts and a cover. He's got his work cut out for him. What seems to be a major weakness in the Cobra IRS is the rear cover mounting point, Anthony is gonna address that and maybe we can get a mounting solution figured out for others that want to do the swap.
I just plopped the subframe on the rear to get an idea of the size difference.

Now I've talked to a few interested in the swap and those who don't exactly have the same power goals as mine. I will try to see if it's a viable option to maybe utilize the stock rear by eliminating the viscous coupler in the snout. It's a consideration, not a promise. The factory rear is small and I don't know what kinda of torque it can take as a single unit.

I was planning on picking up a Cobra IRS subframe and seeing what it would take to retrofit it. Theres an entire rear end on eBay for $1300 but I can't justify snagging it with all the house mods I have taking priority.

I don't have nearly your power goals with my swap (I'd be happy with 450rwhp in my gutted shell) so I was also gonna see what it would take to ghettofab an 8.8 Explorer LSD into the MS6 subframe and look into getting custom axles made, but some breathing room would be nice.

I was also really debating just trying out the stock unit, but had the same reservations with what it could hold not being supplemented with AWD.

Def want to see what your guy can come up with.

Yeah I new for even my SBE(stock bottom end) power goals the factory diff wouldn't hold up. Especially on a trans brake. I figured if a speed 6 was making 1000wtq the most the rear would see is 500wtq and that's your average cammed V8 lol so who knows what borrowed time it would be on. I thought about buying the whole cobra subframe just to see if it would come remotely close to fitting but $1300 could be spent else where at the moment. If I happen to come across one closer to me I'll measure it up.

Gonna grab some motor plates and tack the motor in the car then sit it in storage until my Nova is finished.

Still pissed you're beating me to this swap. Still excited someone will actually make this happen. Hoping I can grab an LS/T56 this summer. All I want is 450rwhp, but I still want a clutch pedal.

And to remodel my entire house.

Simultaneously.

Looks like a lot of fun. Have I seen that Nova on Street Outlaws?

I may be a little slow, but you're dropping that single turbo 4.6 into your old MS6 and going 2 wheel drive?

Haha sadly no it's never been on street outlaws. This is a 4.8L LS truck motor. And I'll be doing twin turbos and a powerglide.

Haha sadly no it's never been on street outlaws. This is a 4.8L LS truck motor. And I'll be doing twin turbos and a powerglide.
Nah, thats me. I have a 351W fr a '69 Mustang in my garage I was planning to build, but the more I get into planning it'll cost me as much to stroke a 351W to a 408W, not including the trans, as it will to just buy a straight up LS1- or LS2 + T56 pull out ready to drop in place. And LS will have more headroom.

I wasn't gonna even push the subject of motor. Figured you wanted a Ford motor in it without it being a coyote. But I'm glad to have you on the dark side.

Thank you. The paint is a little wild. I think the color is called Sublime. It's a Mopar color. Hopefully it performs as well as it looks.

That should have an LT1 in it but I understand what you're saying. Hopefully my corksport mufflers won't make it sound too trashy.

I dont know hes on his fourth corvette and i really dont give a fuck

Has had an 85 97 05 and 17

Honestly the 85 was my favorite, you could tell just by looking at it that they were trying to make the best and fastest car in the world, everything since then seems like they are just making a fast chevy.

Bottom line if its fast enough it could sound like fat chicks queefing and it would still be awesome.

Scratch that making it rwd and functional will be all you need
