ms3johanna above says that she feels that the vinyl looks better on any imperfections than she had thought.

From her vids and pics, it is obvious that she and Clint are doing a meticulous job, so I'd trust her judgement.

Yeah, I was REALLY hung up on that, and almost put myself in the same situation as you when it came time to start last weekend (while claybarring, i noticed that the prevalence of rock chips was worse than I thought). Not only was i concerned about how they'd look through the vinyl, bit I was concerned about what would be going on under there for the next few years. In the end, I figured I'm not about to redo my entire hood and roof (that's pretty much what it would have taken) since they'd probably end up uneven after that, which would show through even worse anyway. And they probably/hopefully aren't any worse off under the vinyl than they would be otherwise. In hoping the vinyl may actually slow the process, but only time will tell.

As Rob said, I wrapped over mine and you can really only see one or two really deep ones on my roof. And at the end of the day, with the car looking as awesome as it does overall, those don't really bother me. So don't be a fool, get out there and wrap your tool.

I will mention 2 things that I'm assuming helped my situation: I choose a metallic [matte] wrap for this reason- I assume a totally flat color may be less forgiving, and I got the high quality 3M 1080 wrap, which I believe to be thicker and easier to work with.

I've had 2 wraps now over the course of about 4 or 5 years, The wrap is more durable than the mazda paint, the rock chips will barely show, unless they are really bad. I recently had to rewrap my hood and there is no sign of rust or anything going on with the chips. SO get to it and wrap that bitch up!

As alway looking good Rob!

I have been saying I am wrapping my car about a year now. I wrap cars during the day time to usually the last thing I want to do is wrap my own. Well with the turbo crapping out and getting exchanged I decided it was time. I ended up going with 3M's Dark metallic Gray. Hopefully it will be done around the same time ATP ships my new CHRA.

Good looking cars here!!
My machine is dipped. The color is "Stormcloud gray". Gunmetal as a base coat and clear dip mixed with the pearls.

I still have to wrap the front bumper and side skirts, which will hopefully happen tonight.

lol, thanks. Your car looks awesome. Do you have any autox videos?

@MS3johanna; and I have been concerned about her vinyl getting permanently scuffed or burned by cones. That's really awesome to hear it holds up well. When you say fractures, do you mean the lip or the vinyl?

Did you say yours is dipped, anyway?

Here's my autoX armor for my poor car. I've put too much time and money into that job to risk damaging with cones. Magnetic sheeting on the doors (Duplicolor-painted to match the vinyl), and a DIY bra (made from clear vinyl furniture protector) on the front bumper, along with a boat-load of painter's tape.

Your finish looks good. I saw a few pics from Kyle.
Mine is dipped. It's in not too good of a shape atm, had a fuel spill, meth spill, and bug spray marks on the front end and a few cone hits. I plan on getting it redipped for next season, but I'll keep this dip on to protect the paint from the winter. BUT, i'd never have the patience to body armor the car for every event. No way haha

Well, the door panels take ~1 second each to apply (as long as it's warm enough out for the magnets to be flexible). I just have to line up the magnets, and they're done. The bumper, however, takes about 45 minutes each, to apply and remove. It sucks a little, but if you'll notice the wonderful white speed6 next to me, #167 , you might take note that I race that car the majority of the time. Prepping my armor isn't so bad, if only a few times a year. At least not when I consider the aesthetic appeal over what it used to be!

I was gonna say, I see videos of both of you and Clint beating on the white beast lol. 45 minutes is way too long. I barely have time to swap wheels and prep the car in the morning after the 80 min drive to the event. I'll just let the dip absorb the abuse. It's rubbery for a reason

taking the handles off pretty easy? i know theres the bolt behind that black cap on the side of the door and then are you just popping the panel and disconnecting the rod on the inside connected to the handle?

Unscrew the bolt behind cap, this bolt doesn't actually come out it has retainers that keep it in place. Then pulled handle like your opening the door and wiggle the small part of the door handle out. Then grab the big part and slide it towards the rear of the door and hinge it out. That's it.

Damn, some of these cars look great. That red paint on my car is getting worse and worse every year. I might retire the car from DD duty forever and keep it for a track/weekend car.

Paint on the hood and hatch is screwed, might replace them both with carbon fiber and plasti dip the rest of the car, getting the car re-painted is uber expensive and not an option. I have been thinking of maybe doing battleship grey.

Inspiration came from the S2000

Does anyone here know if its possible to maybe do a a light coat of dip so it's possible to see the carbon weave while still having colour? I have never really played with the stuff before.

I finally got around to doing necessary body work on my speed and wrap was cheaper than paint + I hate blending so this happened. It was a bitch of a job and luckily, I had all my speed buddies help me during the weekend. We don't have Nator here but our own little thing works out just fine

The wrap is Avery Supreme gunmetal matte metallic with a satin black top and mirrors. The job is not perfect and I can blame my noobness for them. Nothing that can't be easily rectified so it's all good. Maintenance is a dream, and the though of future dings and scratches a mere annoyance in my subconscious, lol.

Weather permitting, I had time for a quick shoot beside my shop Wednesday so here it is with some of the install pics. I got a lot of good feedback on the MS owners FB page, but felt I owed it to this forum to post here too, as the car would not run or look anywhere as good as it does without the info I soaked in from hours of late night reading these past years!

The Montreal matte trio was at it again yesterday for a quick shooting at our undisclosed location.

In other news, I need a better lighting setup and lenses...

You wrapped for the same reason as me! Did you have to bondo? Also, what do you mean "THE" weekend? Is that to say it took you and your buddies a single weekend to wrap your car? If so, how many buddies are we talking...?

Hell no... The guys helped me out during the weekend OF MY WEEK VACATION I took to wrap this sunuvabitch lol... I started Saturday morning at 10am and finished next Saturday at 10am haha.

I could go in detail of my many fails during this install, but lets just say lack of heat during those long nights made it... interesting... for lack of nothing but swears.

And as I stated before in other conversations about this whole ordeal, guys who do this for a living earn every single cent of it, that's all I can say! Btw, thanks. I followed your thread closely and some mental notes taken came in handy during the job!

hey guys. im sure this question has been asked before in this thread, but how long does vinyl wrap typically last?

im about to buy a 370z (2014 with 200 miles for cheap) but im not too fond of the color and was considering wrapping as a semi-permanent solution. ill do it if itll last two years at least, given the price it usually costs

You can make the vinyl last for 4 years or so but personally I like to change it up every two years. The longer it is on the harder it is to get off (depending on your climate). Vinyl tends to dry out, when it dries out it cracks.
