Cars look great guys. Rob, yours is very clean and tasteful!

Got a couple of questions:

Does water leave marks on the matte finishes?
How much would a shop charge to do this? Ballpark? (Just no time for something like this).
Would white be much harder to maintain compared to black/darker finishes?
If there are rock chips for example on the hood (minor ones) would it prevent proper adhesion or a smooth finish?
What kind of prep is required for the paint before applying this?

Thanks Lex...

Does water leave marks on the matte finishes?
-I haven't found hard water to be any more damaging to the vinyl than paint. I've actually had a few hard water spots that I've been able to remove with either p21s paintwork cleansing lotion or a very mild clear coat polish (Menzerna po085rd).

I've also been using something called Permanon Platinum as a protectant, and Stoners invisible glass with rain repel also works well.

How much would a shop charge to do this? Ballpark?
-I've seen the quotes for a professional installation run the gamut, and it seems that most of the cost is labor if the shop is going to take off the door handles, front and rear clip etc.
Quotes I've seen have been as low as $500.00 and as high as $~4000.00 for labor.
...word of mouth in your area may help find a good installer for a good price

Would white be much harder to maintain compared to black/darker finishes?
-I would request / purchase a sample of the different manufacturer's matte white for 2 reasons:
1) some have a satin finish (easier to maintain) and others have a pearl effect...
2) you can soil the sample and test how easy it will be to maintain without a big commitment

If there are rock chips for example on the hood (minor ones) would it prevent proper adhesion or a smooth finish?
-rock chips will not prevent good adhesion, but may be visible. (although the vinyl is awesome because it is very conformable, it becomes a double edged sword because the vinyl conforms to any divots or foreign matter.) Some shops will touch up the paint before applying the vinyl (see $500-$4000.00 quote). IMO, the vinyl over the chips will look better than chipped paint just because of uniformity of color.

Vinyl seems to be more resilient in terms of chipping than Mazda factory paint on my front bumper btw.

What kind of prep is required for the paint before applying this?[/QUOTE]
-A paint safe solvent is used to remove all wax / tar etc. and then the paint is wiped down with isopropyl alcohol. Newer technology "air release / pressure sensitive" vinyl) can be applied and removed without damaging the paint and without leaving adhesive residue.

how much vinyl did you need to cover the whole car? Also what do you use for normal washes?

My roof is matte black with 3m material.

Wash it like any other part of my car. Dries easier too without spots. You can wax it if you want.

Regular car wash soap that is not a "wash and wax" product will work. The wash and wax products may leave the finish blotchy until the next wash / rain.

If you go to Auto Vinyl Solutions, you can check out their vehicle packages and get a rough estimate of cost and amount of material needed.

finkle got it covered. for matte finishes you CANNOT use anything that has any type of wax in it. It will ruin the matte finish. regular car wash soap works, but as finkle said not wash and wax soap. I use mother's california gold car wash once a week and wipe it down with a 50/50 rubbing alcohol/water mix whenever I can. Washing the car takes me about 10-15 minutes matte wrap is awesome that way

I will do my best to see if I can bring a model. I doubt it though, much easier to get a model up here.

I'm kidding about the model. That one in your Konig photo just really looked good.

Interesting. My vinyl guy told me I could wax it if I wanted. Really the only reason I would, is for the ease of drying due to beading, but after the washes Ive done since having my roof, drying hasnt been an issue.

In fact, I looked at it as one less thing to wax on my car haha. Saves a lot of time, especially if Im layering carnuba. Did a 4 layer stint with some dodo juice products I have. Good stuff!

But yeah, the matte wrap is definitely way easier to maintain than paint haha.

This is from 3m's website,
"No polish is recommended for matte or textured films, and no wax-based product is recommended for any of
film series 1080. In these instances, the product tends to fill in the inherent texture of the film's surface and can
cause the film to develop a haze."
Not saying your vinyl guy is wrong, but if you think about it what 3m says makes sense.
Your car looks awesom BTW..MORE PICS!!!!!

Wrapped cars are the sex! Very nice job on them!
@rfinkle2 love the way your tails came out too, any tips for the novices out there that would like to candy their tails?

I tried and it came out like crap, so I took some goo-gone to it. It may also have been too humid when I tried.

The VHT red that I used did not like a clear coat to be sprayed over top.

In general, spraypaint looks best with 2 light coats followed by 1 wet coat to reduce orange peel.

For the life of me, I couldn't build enough paint with the vht to wet sand the tails, so I'm redoing them soon.

Thanks for the compliments btw.

A photo I really like that Kelz took for me:

It is a bit of a pain, but I use p21s paint cleanser to get the spots off (only thing I can find mild enough to remove them without jacking up the vinyl), and then denatured alcohol to remove the paint cleaner.

The paint cleaner leaves the finish blotchy, so I follow it with the denatured alcohol.

I have had a few people say to use rubbing alcohol to remove spots. Have you tried this at all?

Yes. Depending on the composition of the spots, it may work, it may not.

Some spots are primarily calcium, some are rust, some are lime, hard to say but worth a try.

@rfinkle2; what's the difference between denatured and rubbing/isoprophyl alcohol? I saw a gallon conatiner of denatured in lowes and was tempted to buy it just so I didn;t have to keep buying 1 liter at a time of rubbing alcohol.
