Default Question for the Corksport Turbo guys

Hi,

I am getting my CS turbo fitted in a few days and had a question for those who are running it. I am aiming for between 300 - 350fwhp. I am officially out of money (and out of time to add more parts) so I am stuck with my COBB SRI being my main restriction (stock intake size?). The rest is fairly good as in my sig.

Achievable with the COBB? I will replace it one day, but I do like the design etc and only got it a few months ago and can't justify right now (and it wouldn't deliver in time anyway) after the many AU thousands I have spent on the car.

Thanks

You most likely won't make more than 320 or so to the wheels without meth or e85.

What about with a different intake, but on pump fuel?

I have heard the cobb airbox is restrictive but I may be wrong. You should do some logs with and without it just to see. Even with the cobb maf being about oem size the tih is only 2.25" so that is more of a restriction at the moment vs the maf.

Freek said you can make ~350whp before running out of MAF volts on a stock ID short ram.

It may help with spool due to higher velocity and then impede it at higher rates of flow, just like any other small vs large orifice on the intake and exhaust side.

Interesting, I always assumed the opposite- bigger the intake the faster the spool.

It's an interesting concept and I don't know for sure. The VTCS in your IM is there to increase low flow air velocity for a stable idle, and tubular exhaust manis either spool faster for small ID piping or flow more up top with larger diameter piping, so I'd imagine there has to be some correlation.

I'm going to have to disagree @JgamB; A higher airflow velocity is going to have a lower pressure associated with it, so the turbo will have to make a larger pressure differential for the same boost pressure (relative to atmospheric).

I would need proof. Same way I hunted for a year that a larger intake produced more power on the K04 before making my purchase for a BNR S3 instead. (inflated g/s but no 60-100 improvement logs aside)

I was able to hit 295ish whp on full E85 with a K04, hackjob sri, tiny spectre (autozone) filter and stock TIP while waiting to find a full intake. I'm sure 320+ is attainable with the CS turbo.

It would also have to flow less air to fill the pipe at the same pressure. You than also get into pressure ratios across the compressor and associated heating of the air which will vary depending on where you are on the efficiency map. There are too many variables claim a direct correlation with just math. Good thing @Raider; has @rfinkle2; tuning him. We should get some good data points to compare shortly.

I have ordered the CS 3" intake to get on at a later date as it won't come in time. I have COBB TIH, which I assumed was a bit less restrictive than OEM, is that correct?

I am looking at the CS website and they have a CS TIH listed, is this any bigger than the COBB one? Can't see a sizing...

Unless otherwise noted the tih and tips are all 2.25" diameter which is basically stock sized but round instead of pancake

COBB is rated at 2.25" (57mm) and CS is rated at 60mm (2.36") ...Doesn't seem like a 400AU + shipping investment to me...

Is there a recommended intake in another brand that is bigger?

they offer both 3" and 3.5" intake systems.

CorkSport Power Series 2007-2013 Mazdaspeed 3 MAF 3" Intake
Mazdaspeed 3 Power Series 3.5? Intake System

edit: i should note that i'm note sure if they offer a "true" 3 inch inside diameter on the inlet pipe. but they do note a 3" inlet pipe on their page. they're gearing more toward the bigger maf housings on these.

Only thing I can see on the corksport page for gen 2 3's is the 3" and over intake system. They do list a power TIH (only 1, in alum) , but it says 60mm, which is stock size.

Turbo Inlet Pipe | Mazda Intake only TIH listed on corksport website. Guess i'm gonna have to go another brand..

You're still talking about intakes I think?? I have ordered a 3" CS intake based on advice, now I am asking about turbo inlet hose, of which it looks like corksport only has engineered a stock size one by the looks of it. I could be mistaken though...

that is only the inlet pipe. the three inch one comes with their system (maf housing, couplers, and clamps included). you could always call or email them to see if they can set you up with the inlet pipe only. you won't contract any diseases by asking.

If my initial assessment wasn't counter-intuitive enough (small intake, potentially faster spool), I'll just go a step further and suggest that the "pancake", which I prefer to call a calzone, uses HVAC principles for air velocity, and a lack of turbulence by spreading flow across a flattened and widened arc, which equalizes the speed of the air moving through it.

I couldn't find any metrics showing a round turbo inlet pipe was more than cosmetic either, lol. I'm just full of piss and vinegar tonight.

A long time ago when like five parts existed for the platform, someone took the time to run comparison logs. The stock tip while terrible to look at is pretty well designed, stock turbo at least there was no benefit to changing to a different stock size tip.

I wish that I had the time to design a 3 or 3.5 inch equivalent tip that was modeled after the stock. With an equivalent flow area and squashed to get by the ecu I think it would appeal to a lot of people. Shit even just sitting on an available aluminum one would probably get you close.

@Easter Bunny;
Didn't it just impact the spool time of the k04 like reducing it by a little? Like basically nothing to worry about on a k04.

But OP supposedly has a cs turbo which may benefit from a large 3"-3.5" tih.

Its been too long to remember all of the details, just that changing the tip was more of a why not do it while your there.

Now larger size full intakes (filter to turbo) have shown gains on all turbos even if you aren't maxing the maf
