Thumbs up Installed JBarone Short Shift Plate in 2010 Speed3

So I got my JBarone Short Shift Plate and installed it the other day.

Dude... seriously I thought the HID install was the easiest mod ever until I tried this one. I didn't even have to take off my CAI (With the stock airbox you would have to remove it though)

I think this is totally worth $80 (half of a STS kit) and made a huge difference. I wasn't going to install a short shifter because I am NOT tearing up my interior on my brand new car with 2,000 miles, so when I heard these were working good I decided to give it a shot.

The shifter feels very similar to a Miata/MR2 throw where it is notchy, but not in an annoying way.

This guy JBarone that makes them seems to be a great guy. He responded to my emails quick and I got the shifter two days after ordering. The piece is hefty and feels solid. Everything you need for the install is included, even loctite for the bolts. That is a big deal for me since I don't have a bunch of half opened bottles of lube (lube... hah) and loctite lying around. He finally set up a page so you can order online instead of having to PM/Email him, so if you want to buy online it's here: www.jamiesplanet.com

I was worried because on the pictures of the other ones I had seen installed, it looks like the shifter boot was rubbing on this metal piece, but after the install I found out it is barely brushing it. I put the lube (I love the word lube, I'm stoked I got to say it twice here) on the boot anyway, but those boots would be probably be almost impossible to tear even if you were trying.

Here are some pics and a video of the install (and yes, every video I make has to be waaaay too dramatic because that's just how I roll...

So what is a short shift plate and how is it different than a short shifter? Never done one so some clarification would be great! Thanks!

Basically instead of opening up the center console of your car and replacing the actual shifter (and reducing the height of the shift knob which I dislike) you just unhook where the shifter connects inside the engine bay, and bolt it on top of this metal plate which changes the throw. You basically get a 40% reduction in shift throw (and I can hit third good now) and it's easily reversable

The short shift plate takes the cable linkage off the stock ball (over the "EE" in the Mazdaspeed sticker) and moves it to the right (like 3/4" or so) resulting in a shorter throw. A short throw shifter shortens the throw near the shifter but also usually lowers the shift knob height, which not everyone wants. The plate is also a lot easier to swap back out if you need to (cough) (dealership). I have the plate and it seriously rules. Sometimes it's a tiny bit harder to get into 1st, but not always and you get used to it after a couple days.

Also, by the looks of it, you got the 07-09 instead of the 10 one. Any reason for that?

You da Man Aetherfury! You're a modding fool lately.

Can't wait to get in my led license plate bulbs and reverse lights. I guess I need to be convinced more about the HID replacement

I know it looks simple enough, but can you post up the directions on how to install this shifter kit? Are there directions you could scan in?

Thanks!

Sure! He has 'em online Here

Didn't you like my shiny HIDs in the video?! You know you wanna get 'em. Okay so that was a Sony Vegas filter a little overdone, they're not really that bright hahaha.

It's a 2010 kit, but I got a first run before the sweet new "cut" logo! I might upgrade to the new plate a little later, but for now I refuse to even take my plate off long enough to switch it. The car should come stock like this

Damn, I didn't even know this existed. I must get this. I was considering a short shift kit, but I'm pretty happy with the stock shifter height, so this part looks like the perfect solution.

Thanks for the pics and vid, Aetherfury (dude, the music you use friggin' kills me, lol).

damn, i did this on my jetta, swapped the trans mount with one from an audi TT, loved it but made shifting a bit notchy. I just ordered a SS for mine... I would have just bought the plate but always wanted to reduce the height as well. 40% is a great reduction for 80 bones. well done!

This is very tempting, the throws aren't overly long right now, but could certainly be cleaned up a little.

Cool. I'm glad you like it.

I'm surprised more 2010 owners are not all over this.

Painted. Still very durable though. Paint was getting to be very difficult and messy so I had to switch.

I'm still undecided as to whether I want to keep the stock shifter height or lower it a bit. I definitely want shorter throws, and the price of your part is inticing, but I just haven't made up my mind yet. Plus, after dropping 26k for a brand new car, it's difficult to convince the wife just how important mods are. She's about the furthest thing from a 'car person' there is.

Let her drive your car! My wife was unsure about stuff until she drove it a few times and now she likes to drive it after any mod to see the difference. She recently fessed up to having a modded 200sx many years ago with some mods and even ricer neon lights hahaha.

Seriously though, that is the reason I get so much authorization for changing stuff. She drives it harder than I do

She doesn't know how to drive a manual. Well, actually she did, because I taught her how to in 2002 when we had to take my Explorer to Texas and I didn't want to do all the driving. So the only experience she's had is highway driving for one trip to Texas and back 7 years ago.

The problem is, she has no desire to drive stick. She doesn't understand the advantages of a MTX, and can't even grasp how it could actually be fun. Yes, I've tried to convince her of all of this. I was fortunate that she was ok with me getting a manual; we used to have 3 cars--2 of them auto--so we'd each have at least two cars we could drive. I got rid of two (well, I totaled the MX5) to get the MS3.

Hey Jbarone I'm the guy that lives in Washington state and I received your shipment today and just got done installing it. Install took about thirty minutes and it was just from taking the intake off. I'm real happy with the purchase and love how my shifter feels. I will recommend this to some of my friends here in WA. Thanks again

HAH! I think our wives are related.

That's awesome! I'm glad you like it.

Question... How much different was removing the intake compared to the directions I supplied? I didn't have a 2010 in my possession long enough to make up directions specific to that model.

Thanks,
Jamie

It was perfect I think.... I'm pretty sure I used your instructions when I installed it. They were definitely better than CP-E's removal instructions. They main difference is that the 2010 doesn't have that big piece of plastic underneath that scoops the ram air in.

The instructions were perfect. I just ment the whole install took about thirty minutes but the longest part was taking the intake out. Sorry for confusion.

Still running great J-Bone! (That's your new nickname just so you know...)

I'm totally used to the shifts now which is even better.

No new mods. I'm going to be doing a racepipe shortly!

Glad to hear things are working well for you. Word on the street has it that Pika is planning major upgrades.
