Default JBarone Short Shift vs J-speed short Shift

I would like to hear from those who have installed either or researched buying one over the other. I believe the JBarone rubs the rubber bushings while the J-speed does not. Cost might also be a factor even though it is not an expensive part.

I've had my jbarone ssp for months without issue. Love the short throws with the stock height. I have his DH mount as well. I posted pics of the dh mount, and made comments about the plate. It's good quality and inexpensive. Not that it matters, he's a hellavu nice guy too. Bushings are mint.

I've had the jbarone since summer with no problems. It seems to have gotten even smoother in the last few weeks. There is no more notchiness and the 1-2 shift isn't as clunky as it used to be (I was probably shifting at too low an RPM). I checked the rubber boot a couple days ago and there wasn't any wear, although I'll probably put some more grease on there just to be safe.

ditto budumfan and wankular's comments. jbarone ssp throws are perfect and no damage to the rubber boot.

I read that 247 post and most posts regarding SSP's and I think it's pretty funny how someone always asks about using it with a short shifter. Geez, how much shorter do you want the throws to be, 90% ?!

I've had the J-speed plate for a few weeks now and i love it. it does not rub the rubber boot, however, i've never heard of any wear issues with the JBarone plate. Unless JBarone has lowered the price, J-speed is a little cheaper, $55 compared to $80. you probably can't go wrong either way.

ive got the jbarone as well and love it. If your looking for a weighted shift knob hes got a special price for both which is a great deal. The shifter weight on jbarone's is heavier than stock too iirc, either way a great product and yes hes hell of a nice guy.

remember that jspeed doesn't come with the counter weight. You can purchase it from us for $25, making it the same price as Jbarrone. It's just personal choice at that point.

i didn't realize that. although the shifts seem just fine without the heavier weight even in these 20 deg temps.

Jbarone plate here and I love it. It doesn't rub on mine, it barely touches it. I haven't even reapplied any lube and I have no issues.

I have read about the J-Speed on the other forum and I feel more confident in Jamie's plates due to his background and the research he puts into it. The price is the same with the counter weight, and the JBarone plate comes with everything you need, even down to loctite!

Read page 4 of this thread and look at the pic of the J-Speed plate someone got. I understand it's just one plate, but whatever method he's using to make them isn't churning them out identical: Link

well it sounds like the jbarone ones aren't identical either seeing as that I'm rubbing to the point of breaking the rubber on mine

That's so weird! Is it possible you over-tightened the counter weight where it connected? When I first installed it I wrenched it down SUPER hard (grip of steel) and I noticed it sat up a tiny bit higher which puts the boot closer in, I backed it off some before my loctite sealed.

Do you also have a grip of steel? I noticed you posted without using the opportunity to use the word "lube" which is sad.

So you really think that if I loosen the weight that the whole thing will move away from the shifter? I mean I tightened them and did use an ample amount of lube (are you happy now? ). Either way the damage has already been done. What do you think will happen to the arm thingy now that the boot is cracked?

I dubt anything will happen, its just a dust cover. Worst case your shifting will become harder until you clean the dirt out.

Can you please send me or post a picture of this ripped boot? You posted the same comment on the other forum but still have not produced a picture. No one has reported any issues with the boot except for you. Over 200 sold worldwide and no issues.

Thanks,
Jamie

Look at what you get for $55, just the plate, no hardware, nothing. You're and adding a 1/4 of material and using the same short stock bolts with out any means of locking them. Very dangerous in my opinion.

I provide new bolts with lock washers AND Loctite. Plus you get the proper counter weight. Utilizing the stock counter weight is too heavy, which causes the transmission to slam in to gear. Why do you think I never sold just the plate? The stock weight is proper for the stock configuration, NOT this configuration. I could have easily sold my plate for $55 alone, but I won't ever it do it that way.

You all wanted short throws right? Mine is 40%. His is not 40%, so he's essentially lying about what it can do.

I also got to wonder how this is even possible. Even if it is a defect, how do you not notice this?

Thanks,
Jamie

Well, I'm not 100% sure but it did on mine! Seriously though, it's amazing anything ripped that boot because those things are HARDCORE. Like a previous poster said, it's just a dust cover so it's probably not a big deal. I'm just really surprised it happened since I haven't heard of that before.

Thank you for saying lube.

I have a post in the 2010 section here that shows the rubber boot. It barely touches on mine and that is with my wife cycling through the gears and me watching it.

Neutral  +1 score
Default JSPEED vs. JBARONE STSP **THE FACTS**

The following information contains ONLY the facts.

All data contained herein can be reproduce by anyone, anytime, anywhere.

Here is what both kits contain. JBARONE on the left, JSPEED on the right.

Back side of both. JBARONE on the left, JSPEED on the right.

Front side of both. JBARONE on the left, JSPEED on the right.

JSPEED ball stud removed.
Locktite appears to be applied, only 4 threads in to the plate.

This next picture is very important as I will now reveal the exact throw reduction of both the
JBARONE and JSPEED short throw shift plates.

Out to the shop for installation
Test vehicle is a 2009 MAZDASPEED 3

All measurements were taken from same location of the dash to the center line of the shift knob.

In the stock configuration the shifter travels 2.0" from neutral to the top of
3rd gear. The next shot is of the stock configuration in 3rd gear.

Neutral is at 6.75"
3rd is at 4.75"
Difference of 2.0"

A shot of the JSPEED installed.

With the JSPEED installed the shifter travel
from neutral to the top of 3rd is 1.625". The next shot is of the JSPEED in 3rd.

Neutral is at 6.625"
3rd is at 5"
Difference of 1.625"

A shot of JBARONE installed.

With the JBARONE installed the shifter travel
from neutral to the top of 3rd is 1.25". The next shot is of the JBARONE in 3rd.

Neutral is at 6.625"
3rd is at 5.375"
Difference of 1.25"

Now the math

JSPEED

1.625” to go in to 3rd gear.

1.625” is 81.25% of 2”

100%-81.25%=18.75%

The JSPEED STSP reduces the throw by 18.75%

JBARONE

1.25” to go in to 3rd gear.

1.25” is 62.5% of 2”

100%-62.5%=37.5%

The JBARONE STSP reduces the throw by 37.5%

I believe if you keep it lubed, like at each oil change, you will have no problems.

Thanks,

Have Jbarone ss kit and E4 black shift nob defintely the perfect combo in my opinion.
the boot does rub but just lub it well with lithium grease. No worries have had
it on for about 2 weeks now wouldn't even think about going back to stock..

Huge difference thanks jamie and E4

Well certainly looks like yours is a helluva lot better jbarone! I'm just curious tho, will these work for a speed6 like jspeed says his will? I'd imagine so, but when I looked at your site I didn't see any listed under the speed6 section, is that cause they all say speed3 on them?

By the way if anyone has the E4 shift nob and u ever get into any kind of
Road Rage incident u can use it for self defense. Man that thing weighs a TON!

Feel like ordering a second one to have it as back up.

Sorry but no mine does not work for the MS6. Technically his does, but only reduces the throw by about 19%. If mine only reduced the throw by 19% then it would work too. Pretty much a waste of time an money.

In the next few weeks I should have an STSP for the MS6 as well as the regular Mazda 3.

Thanks,
Jamie

In the next few weeks I should have an STSP for the MS6 as well as the regular Mazda 3.

Thanks,
Jamie
Cool cool. Personally I'd rather have a quality piece, so waiting is no biggie. I will now be following you very closely tho on the forums to see that final product released

I agree! That's why this is taking longer. Believe me when it's done you'll know it.

Thanks,
Jamie

I have a JBarone STSP and it works flawlessly...no rubbing, no torn boot.

I experience nice short shifts made with the right materials and the proper design.

The J Speed looks more fancy until you really look at it. I work in the metalworking tool industry and I wouldn't use the J Speed just based on the material and mediocre machining.

Thanks, Jamie, for a great product that does EXACTLY what it's designed to do...
