****2015 update thanks to @Inquisitive;*****

Intercooler: TMIC / FMIC for MS6, MS3 (1st and 2nd Gen)

Purpose of TMIC / FMIC

Our air-to-air intercooler (IC) increases the efficiency of the induction system by reducing induction air heat created by our turbocharger resulting in a more dense intake charge, which promotes more thorough combustion.

As you start modifying, you will notice more KR with higher ambient temperatures. This is reduced somewhat by replacing the stock TMIC with a larger TMIC or FMIC. WMI is another way to cool the cylinder temperatures, but that is for another thread.

Three minutes of standing still can raise the IAT by 30 degrees. Increasing IAT by one degree raises BAT by one degree. For every 10 degrees of increase in IAT, you lose 1% of your wheel horsepower. A 75 degree rise from being stuck in traffic is 7.5%. For a 300 WHP, 7.5% is 22.5 HP. Once your vehicle is moving again, it usually takes from 15 to 30 seconds for the IAT to start dropping towards ambient. @MSMS3; )

FMIC are particularly required in hot ambient temperature areas to prevent heat soaking. Note that FMICs lower the boost pressure @rfinkle2; ) and cause some turbo lag (OTC). FMIC provide the coolest source of air for consistent power delivery, typically a 30º F drop, which helps prevents KR to support more HP. However, TMIC are more popular and do not add turbo lag.

See MSF Wiki Glossary for any terms not understood: Glossary - Mazdaspeed Forums Mazdaspeed 3/6 Wikispeedia

Prices are 2015 ball park figures. You may be able to find better deals from various websites. It's up to you to find the best price.

With threads like this it is often asked, “Which is the best?” This is difficult to answer as some consider best quality at any price, personal preference / bragging rights / street cred (popular brand), best value (quality at a good price), popularity (local Nator), cheapest price, etc. Like the Wiki and my other threads, this is just a list in descending Genpu purchased popularity order.

Good stuff. Now go into the custom kits or at least piping.

I don't know about genones but that ebay piping kit wouldn't work at all for the Pus imo. There isn't any proper bends in any of those pipes to get to the TB and the same goes for the hot pipe. That is unless people want to hack and tack every 3 inches.

Great write-up... You could add the PG piping kit and the Godspeed Type C core, not the best solution but for a DIY IC setup it can be done on the Gen2s without any modding of crashbar/piping.

No, you don't ever have to tune, that's for sissies. Just like upgraded fuel pumps, any kind of monitoring, donating to these forums, and FUCKING SEARCHING. All way overrated.

All of this being said, which TMIC's are preferred by members? I am considering the ETS, Corksport, and cp-e, however I don't like that the hood scoop on the Gen 2 rubs on the corksport or that the cp-e is not customizable in color. That being said, since they are all comparable in core size.

If my car is a DD, and see's winters (Ontario, Canada), would you recommend TMIC (Corksport) or FMIC (Cobb Gen2)?
I'm concerned about how the FMIC will hold up to winter snow\ice build-up on the front bumper as you drive through deep snow ... but like the idea of the IC not sitting on top of the engine on the hot summer days.

Your recommendations or advice appreciated!

Oh, and its a '10 Speed3 with all the other supporting mods (CP-e Nano Intake & TIP, HPFP internals, COBB DP & Accessport)

On hot days, in traffic, even the best top mount becomes a very effective air heater...I watch my dashhawk read up to above 150 deg.

Flip side. A pal has an evo with FMIC... a little slight crash into a curb disconnected the core form the pipes. If you FM, dont hit anything. But Ive never heard of any issues like this on a speed.

Personally I dont drive mine in snow, however Id say FMIC will be fine as its protected by the bumper.

Another thing I'm concerned about besides what you just mentioned about FMIC and risks of damage from a slight collision near the front area is the fact that it'll have more silicone connectors to "pop off" under boost if not tightened properly ... also the fact that there's a lot more volume to fill up from turbo to TB, where as the TMIC's tubing is at a minimal. But the heat soak from the TMIC is the biggest drawback for me.

Those with GenPu's, what do you do with the hood's opening once you go FMIC ... do I need to worry about water puddling up on the valve cover from the rain cause of the hood vent?

Thats a damn good question.
Even more important is what goes on inside the engine bay when you are hitting about 123.
Might create positive pressure and cause some weird shit with steering.
I have had the ETS 3.5 since inception.
It made some more power and it did resist heat soak longer.

Depends on what height snowbanks you are jumping. if the FMIC gets dicked up.
And if you land hard you should be checking alot more bolts than just the t bolt clamps on the 5 ply silicone.

FMIC is the only solution when you are going to keep increasing performance.
It's a fact.
Most excellent article. Nice coverage and helpful i bet.
Thanks

Anyone figure out the questions raised earlier regarding having a front mount and driving in the rain or what shit might fly through there or the air pressure difference?

I saw a pretty big bug splat on my firewall, obvious where it hit where it came from, but didn't think that would happen with the stock tmic and shroud.

I had same question a mechanic friend told me no. Same stuff happens with top mount and the hood scoop. We have been having monsoon conditions here in Florida and my little CXR is running like a champ. Although I am sure it is not great for the engine for star and stop, so I let idle for a couple minutes when I get to my garage.

Question, Gonna go BT next week with a GTX3076 EWG and AEM Meth kit, would i benefit of upgrading my CRX FMIC Core with a bigger core?, Planing to upgrade from 22X7X2.5 to 24X10X3.

Yes if have a k04,no if you are going BT. I've had mine for couple months and still running strong. I check my fittings every week and nothing has shifted or loosened. This is good cause I did install myself and I am far from a mechanic. I change it out when I get my GTX28.

I'm looking at a used, custom fmic kit for the speed6, the core is 29x9x3, and the piping is 2.5'. I'm wondering if a core this big is recommended for an almost stock 6 . Should I just get the piping and buy a smaller core? Thx

has anybody seen this godspeed kit they are selling? I came across it on ebay, it looks to be the exact same piping and brackets as the cx racing kit, but a godspeed core...

Looking at ordering the ATP FMIC kit, but wondering about the "bumper support modification" required with the larger IC -- anybody have experience with that?

@Raider;

It might not be fair to issue the Sure / Street Unit warning for Autoexe, but I could not find another source for this IC.

So far, I have just added the ICs available since the OP’s post and fixed broken image links. Shall I continue with a full 2015 price update like the The Motor Mount Thread thread? The images and text are ready for uploading?
