Tire Suggestions

Well it's almost time for me to change out the tires on my Genpu. I have Bridgestone Potenza all seasons on it now and they have been on the car since I bought it about 6 months ago. I drive spirited with the occasional road rally, and my daily commute is about an hour and a half each way(mostly highway 80mph+). These tires have lasted very long and perform quite well in rain and dry, and not too bad in snow. I will however be purchasing winter tires this winter. I haven't really got a clue what tires to pick up for this I guess since I'm planning on purchasing winter tires I can get some summer tires, but I will be driving in the rain some days. So if anyone out there has any suggestions of tires in the all season category I'd appreciate the input. I would like to spend at most $150 a tire.

TireRack has $80 off a set of Goodyear or Dunlops right now. I run the Dunlop Direzza Z1 on my car and love them, but when they are done I have no idea what I'll replace them with. They are noisy as all get out, but the lateral traction is phenomenal.

Purely summer. The Z1 was replaced with the Z2 but I'd guess they are just as noisy. I run a dedicated winter tire when it comes around, but I'm considering the DWS for summer duty because it has decent grip and is pretty quiet. Also, the Z1/2 and tires like it that are built for track/autox have horrible straight-line traction so if you do the 1320 you are going to hate them.

Well I love my twisty roads and the road rallies I do are all winding roads so something for daily drive and road rallies

I've been through 2 sets of Bridgestone Potenza RE760 and love them. Great wet and dry traction and pretty quiet. I've gotten about 30k on each set. I'm just about due for some new rubber and I'm thinking about trying out the Nitto Neogen.

Id have to recommend the continental extreme contacts. there is a DW for dry/wet and the DWS for the all season. I have the DW and I find them to be a very well rounded tire, pun intended. The wet performance is great and is a pretty quiet tire.

Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 is what I'm currently running on my stocks. They're a little expensive but they are an exceptional tire. If there is a Costco near you, they are on sale. If you buy a set of 4 you get $70 off and they come with a free 5 year road hazard warranty =P

On my GenPu, due to a recommendation from a trusted friend at discount tire I ran BF-Goodrich Sport Comp2's I believe. I was going to buy the Michelin but for the price the BFG's are hard to beat and my buddy said he's run both and they performed similar on his car. To my pleasant surprise they performed great during the summer, good when cold, good when wet. Surprisingly enough in Arizona, wet traction is important because we go though a couple months of rain known as monsoon season here. They are about as loud as the Dunlop's where because of the sidewallbut I can corner in confidence. I have 25,000 miles of 70% highway and 30% city on them. I drive all my cars pretty hard and they have held up longer than I expected. I'm due for replacement in the next 3-5,000 miles but 30K out of a performance tire is pretty good in my opinion.

FWIW: I am running Bridgestone Potenza SO4's on my Speed6. I don't know what kind of mileage I can expect but I think they are a phenomenal tire. Great traction, I can corner in confidence, ride comfort is good, and they are pretty quiet.

I switched out the OEM Dunlops after about 5K and went with the Conti DW's. Is it the best tire? No, it has it short comings as do all brands,the sidewalls are soft, but they are the best tire I have driven in wet conditions and the dry grip is not bad either......We use the DWS's in the Winter here in NO Ohio and even in 8-10" of Snow, they did a great job, the DWS's are on our Mazda 6s's.

I am leaning heavily towards a set of Conti DW for year round driving in Oregon (lots of wet driving). How do the DW's compare to the stockers in the dry? I am curious to learn more about my conti club... I assume you buy through the club? I can get a dealer discount on these through a friend.

No worries about the delay - thanks for the explanation. I will definitely PM you if I end up with the DW's. I am on the fence whether I want good road tires year round (DW's) or tires a little more suited for AutoX which will perform less in the wet...

DWS's are the all season tires, D=Dry W-Wet S=Snow

Dw's are the Summer Performance tire. The DW's are very good on the wet, the dry grip is great, the side walls are a bit soft, dpends on your tastes.

If anyone is interested in a set of stock tires off a 2012 Speed 3 let me know...they have less than 300 miles on them. I do not own the car any loner as I am back in a WRX.

@Mike@Stratified; if you run winters get the Conti DW.

That said I have the DWS and have found them to be superior in all conditiOns compared to the stock dunlops. They have a slightly lower ultimate lateral grip but are much more drivable at or beyond the limt. In other words if you slid or spun the stockers you were done not so with the DWS.

For an inexpensive summer tire that has good wet performance I always like to suggest Nitto NT555. They are not the best on the scale of summer tires but they will out perform any all season you can pick up for the money. And you can usually pick up a set of 235/40/18 from tire buyer for ~$135/each. I prefer the NT05 myself, but they don't last as long and can get sketchy in the rain so probably not a route you would want to go.

Have the NT05's and love them. Haven't had any problems with them in the rain. And dat tread doe. Love it. Picked up mine for $660 otd with road hazard warranty.

They're decent when you know what you're on and what to expect; I have no problems with them either. But they are arguably not the best wet tire out there in heavy downpours, because of that delicious tread which comes brand new at like 8/10ths of an inch lol. I love love these tires. But for someone that drives a lot, they need to be prepared to replace them after every summer. They stick so nicely you can't resist roasting them off.

I'm trying to get 2 summers out of them. Switching between those and winters.
Edit: No problems in the rain, yet. Only about 3k miles on them and one bad rain. And for the price I couldn't pass them up.

I just pulled DSW's off my car (not bad for dry, great in the rain and in the snow leave that bitch in the driveway or garage!) and put on Hankook V12 evo's (235 40 18) and I'm very happy with them. They've been fantastic in the rain and I'm very happy with overall daily driver performance.

I just had a set 245/40/18 Bridgestone RE11A's mounted and so far so good, tomorrow I'll see how they are in the rain if the local weatherman is right

I had DWS, nice all season. Noisy at its peak limit. Sidewall is a little too soft for me.

My hankook v12's were nice half way through its tread life. After that, dry and wet traction was not great at all.

My Potenza s-04 pole positions are fairly new and alot better then my impressions with the v12's

My v12's I'd loose traction in 3rd. The s-04 barely loose traction through 2nd.

Ran the stock Lops for about 7k because as soon as the temps dropped below 45* they were useless (and are advertised as such).

Had good luck in the past with PZero Neros--decent AS tire that actually did pretty well in the wet and snow for me.

Running DWS now and love them for what they are--a compromise. Not great in the summer or winter, but enough of a straddle that they'll do fine for 90% of your needs if you don't want to change out tires. They do wear quickly though. Gots to rotate the heck outta them for even wear.

So how do I get that continental promo? It's between them or some other summer tire with a stiffer wall and that can handle these MS rain storms. Any suggestions?

I run Conti DWS for everyday driving and am extremely happy with them. Though the weird thing is I'm already down to 4/32" on the whole set and it's only been about 24k miles. Didn't think I drove them that hard, but I guess I must have. They definitely lose traction towards the end, but that's to be expected.

Good thing the warrantied miles carryover as credit to my next set!
