Wasn't possible to take his friends pump out just for a quick test?

True, we could also swap pumps with his friend to see if that fixes it. I didn't have my deep 18, impact, and 19 mm wrench on me though.

The problem has been identified and resolved (for now). OP purchased a new pump at my request. When I pulled the original pump, the first thing I noticed was that the stock internals' retainer had failed in the exact same manner as the Autotechs. I was very confused. When I pulled the cylinder retainer, all became clear. It was cross-threaded.

There was some decent carnage. There were metal shavings everywhere. The stock internals ate themselves up. The cam follower had a little bit of atypical wear (may have been left over from the AT retainer failure) - I advised OP he might want to replace it in the future. Unfortunately I forgot to bring my spare with me.

It's clear to me that during the original installation of the Autotechs, OP's friend cross-threaded the retainer. This isn't terribly surprising since the retainer has a pretty low thread pitch.

So where did we end up?

1) OP's car is running normally for now and has autotechs installed. He doesn't have any pending codes and fuel pressure is normal. The car has normal driveability and acceleration.
2) There is very likely metal shavings in the hard line and rail, and possibly the injectors as well. I told OP, expect to need to replace all of these items in the future if he starts getting misfires, or if his fuel pressure sensor dies.

What happened during the original diagnosis at Mazda?

Two possibilities in my mind, possibility #1 , they took the pump off, saw what OP's friend did, along with the carnage, and recommended replacing everything (which is what I would do in this scenario honestly). #2 , they really were completely clueless and just took the shotgun approach.

I would actually put money on #2 because they kept insisting that the pump was aftermarket, which it is most definitely not (remember, at the time he took it to the dealer, it had stock internals).
LowFlyin likes this.

Good eye seems to me the plunger wasnt straight I'm assuming. As for the dealership, they most def took the "when in doubt, take it out approach. Mazda would never have us rip the fuel pump apart. Ever!!!

How the hell was it cross threaded though? That's crazy almost as if a couple turns with the good ol' hand wernt enough just run it with an impact straight I guess.

Hmmm I'd hold that money for a little bit just in case the rail and injectors have an unpleasant surprise inside of them but to each his own

He knows @nindoja;, he's been under my car recently. And if you recall, I did give that bolt a couple turns before hitting it with the impact and it cross threaded anyway.

It was like 13. He's exaggerating.

I think all of us are in agreement, if it were our own personal vehicles, we would go ahead and replace the rail, injectors, and hard line. But your call OP.
