P0096
 

Hey guys,

My car gave me a CEL and my OBD2 scanner gave me the P0096 IAT code. My dealer and myself have both cleaned the MAF, but based on my reading, the problem might actually be the MAP sensor?

I'm not sure which avenue to go with this issue. My car drives perfectly fine, but obviously I'd like to resolve whatever issue it is.

I'd probably try inspecting/cleaning the MAP sensor, as this thread leads me to believe the IAT sensor located there ( http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...-input-125345/ ). I'd start there and see where that takes you.

Edit: After reading a few threads and some other sources the IAT sensor is definitely in the MAP sensor, not the MAF. If cleaning doesn't fix it try to swap it out with a friend's and see if that works. If you can't I'd probably just replace it.

I believe IAT is on the MAF sensor.
boost air temperature is detected at the MAP sensor

That's what I thought too, as all the cars I've owned always had the IAT in the MAF. Some research pointed towards the MAP sensor, though. I could absolutely be wrong though.

In either case I'd check both the MAP and the MAF out and see where that takes you.

I have since spoken with the dealership and they agreed the P0096 code comes from the MAP sensor. So they are going to do a few diagnostics for me tomorrow at no charge. They've been good to me!

I asked if the MAP sensor can be cleaned like the MAF sensor and they said no...but I'm not so sure. It seems others have cleaned theirs? I'm assuming the same MAF cleaner could be used to clean the bulb on the MAP sensor.

From my research, the IAT2 error (P0096) is the MAP and the IAT1 is the MAF (P2199?) I think? I could be blowing smoke out of my ass though, haha

One last thing; obviously I don't want to drive around like this too long, but could I cause any harm to my engine with these DTC codes?

Yeah you really shouldn't have any issues running around with it temporarily. It will probably just be annoying more than anything.

Thank you both again so much. The dealership did some diagnostics on the T-MAP sensor and it is indeed out of spec. They hooked it up to their voltmeter to confirm. So I have a new one ordered!

So, as confusing as it is, do not rush out to purchase a new MAF if the main code is P0096 and cleaning the MAF wasn't successful. It is most likely a fault in the T-MAP sensor :)
