Default Big Turbo Antisurge ?

I think my k04 has finally bit the bullet, so im getting ready to order a 3071 from atp with ewg setup. Ive seen a ffew different options for anti surge however and I cant seem to find which option is better. I know atp offers anti surge Porting, and another dealer also offers the standard garrett anti surge compressor housing option. Does anyone know if ATP's porting is better than garrett's standard anti surge housing?

I can't speak from rubber-to-road experience, but I am waiting to install the ATP 3071r EWG anti-surge ported kit I bought from @EdgeAutosport.com; . I did a bit of lurking in the BT threads and read This sticky along with the posts within it to make my decision.

On the GTX3071r I'd be surprised if the standard 4" inlet 2" outlet ATP compressor housing is different to the Garrett one.

Are you talking anti surge or anti creep?

Two different events.

Anti-surge housings are explained by Edge and myself above.

Surging at low RPMS, occur (simply) when the engine is not flowing enough (think exhausting enough or fast enough) for what the turbo is trying to "force" into the engine, causing a significant pressure rise (opposing the compressor flow direction) at the compressor outlet.

Essentially, the turbo is trying to move more air into the engine than the engine is capable to ingest (high PR at the low RPM issue). The housing allows this excess air to be relieved through ports in the compressor housing as opposed to causing huge swings in pressure over the compressor wheels and causing shock waves. This can damage a turbo if left unattended. Anti-surge housings also do not increase compressor efficiency or flow and in some (very few) cases, can actually lower the compressor efficiency by 1 or 2 points. But nothing that is an issue.

Because of the larger size (volume) and the ability of the DI 2.3 engine to flow fairly well at low RPMS (not a volume or flow restriction), IMHO, an anti surge housing for a T3 series Garrett is not a "necessity" on the street. But, that is just my opinion and nothing else.

Thanks for clearing that up. I suppose its just a difference in design of the porting. Id rather buy ported and not need it, then buy ported and fing out I need it.

I would suppose they are pretty similar and the results are minute enough on a "street" setup, you wouldn't even know the difference.

The idea for anti-surge housing is to push the surge line to the left somewhat. Good for small engines with a somewhat larger sized turbo. For the DISI 2.3, it has fairly good flow at low RPM/hi PR on the turbo. However, it's mostly used for the "bigger" type turbos so I am not sure what benefits you would see if any by going that route and spending the extra $$$ for it. Just my 0.02c

Anti surge prevents damage to the turbo in the event that surge occurs by giving the air a path of least resistance to escape around the blades rather than back out through the blades.
