Default Billet wheel replacement ???

We all know about the new GTX series of Garrett Turbo and other brand using a CNC machined wheel VS a cast one that is suppose to be way better...!

When we look at difference between x and non x wheel, the X one that permit more flow is also sligtly larger than the old one for Garrett (GTX3071R VS GT3071R)

Is the flow gain comes from the fact that wheel is a little larger or because of is shape?

I'm asking that because i run a rebuilded GT2871R and a GTX2871R wasn't availaible for a GT28 turbine but their is some billet wheel availaible on the market that should be bolt on for my 71R cold side and i wonder if it worth to spent any money for that?

Snail Turbo among the few have one model etc...

Do any of you ever try to replace a cast wheel by a billet one and notice any change in boost response, max flow etc...?

My gt3071 is being rebuilt right now with a 54.9x76 wheel. Hoping it yields some nice results. Its the comp blade that the hta3076 uses I believe.

Talk to turbo lab of america, they have been awesome and have great pricing.

Yeah i would be interrested to know it too but you also change 71mm for 76mm, you will get improvement for sure but what about comparing it VS a GT3076 then ?

what about someone that would change a 71mm cast with a larger cone head for a 71mm billet cnc with a small head and maybe a different amount of blades? This way, it would be plug and play installation + balancing if you dare too....Can it give more flow like some say about it or it is just an useless swap for almost no gains.

I don't know much about flow engeneering and turbine blade but could it be a significant difference according to only the shape of it ?

Garrett say for GT3071 53.1mm x 71mm comp wheel a general max flow of 460-480hp(47-48lbs/min)

For GTX3071 54.1mm x 71.4mm comp wheel with a general max flow of 560hp (55lbs/min)

This make the change of wheel to request a cold side hosing machining...

PS can i ask how much it cost to get the wheel + machining

I am pretty sure the housing has to be machined. There were a whole slew of options he gave me as possible upgrades, I chose the smallest actually. There were some with 11 blade configurations, but with the small A/R I was worried about surging issues. In the end I was looking to get a billet one to replace my cast wheel that I messed up.

These are the options he gave me.

59mm x 76mm x 7 Blade GTX
58mm x 76mm x 6 Blade
58mm x 76mm x 11 Blade GTX
57mm x 76mm x 6 Blade
57mm x 76mm x 11 Blade
54.97mm x 76mm x 6 Blade GTX

Also, it was sent out and high speed balanced. As well as they replaced all the seals.

I will PM you on pricing, I duno if they want that out or not, but I will let them decide as they have been awesome to me.

Just realized I never posted these like I meant to. The billet is the new wheel, the dark cast one is my old GT3071r wheel.

My turbo is out for balancing right now. They should have it all back by the end of the week. I hope to have it next week.

So without machining/ replacing the compressor housing, you cannot run a GTX CHRA in a GT series turbo. You see to have a pretty good grasp on all of this, i just wanted to throw this out there in case. Also, im willing to bet that the gains seen in GTX > GT were not just from one of the differences on the compressor wheel, but due to the increase in size, addition of blades, shape of blades, and the change in material/ weight.

Im curious if it would be easier/ cheaper to simply buy a GTX turbo and just re use your old hotside. Because you can buy them without the hotside.

Also, Garrett has a ball bearing replacement program, where you send them your damaged chra, and they send you a new one for a highly discounted price. I personally have done this and it was a very simple/ smooth swap.

They are machining the housing to make it fit. This is not an 11 blade design like the GTX, I am not 100% but I believe this is a similar blade design to what is used in the HTA 3076 turbo.

I looked at a ton of options, including replacing the hot side with a GTX as well as swapping CHRAs. Both those options were well out of what I could afford and this is much much cheaper.

New CHRA from garret is expensive and you need the cold side hoosing like a new turbo without the hot side housing and re-use the ATP one if you're running a 60m turbine. This will be very expensive for just a conversion for a healty GT3071R. For a blown GT3071R, it could be a good idea to pay extra money to get a GTX3071R if your atp housing is for a 60mm turbine too. The bennefit to pay that much money could be to run a genuine Garrett. I expect it would cost between 1500-2000$.

The wheel replacement could be less expensive and in my case, i have a GT2871 with only a 53.9mm turbine and ATP housing so their is no GTX CHRA availaible with a 71mm wheel but only a 67mm from Garret.
Buying a replacement billet wheel from a shop making them would be my only option.
I wonder if it worth it because 53.9mm turbine may bring some surge at high boost with a compressor wheel too much powerfull for the turbine...

yes but i tought you were asking? when saying ''Im curious if ...'' i Just went into this few month ago with a burned GT28 and compared every ''genuine'' options and figured out that it won't worth the money to do any ''genuine'' swap and re-using any parts from the gt28 because you have to pay almost the same amount as a complete brand new and you lose any value for the remaining parts not used.

But if the question was a statement and my English isn't good enough to understand it, i appologise for the ''repeat''.

Look into the ball bearing replacement program through ATP. I had a damaged turbine wheel and sent them my entire CHRA and they sent me a brand new one for about $500. It may not be a billet wheel, nore GTX, but it is a solid solution that eliminates the need to rebuild your own CHRA.

Just as an FYI ATP quoted me $531.93 for a CHRA exchange, and a $50 inspection fee. The rebuild of my turbo, new seals, balancing, machining and new wheel cost me less than that.

Nice price, is it a third party CHRA ? Because i finally paid 1100$ (Last spring) to get the Garrett CHRA installed by a local shop. Maybe i got scammed but all shop around was asking about the same and none of them was willing to install any third party CHRA in a Garrett turbo....Any options for me with Garrett parts was more expensive.
I should have register here sooner! Next time i will know!
BTW, i also learned that a direct fit CHRA comes balanced so it's useless to pay a turbo shop to install it.

ATP is the middle man, Garrett directly does not handle the exchange program but they do support it as it is their program. Its just easier for them to have other companies provide this service rather than them having too.

Like i said, it was just an option.
