Default Blew up again...Doing it right this time!

Alright so I bought this car in August of '08, blew up the first time 12,000 miles later (363 Days) and Mazda replaced the motor under warranty. I messed around with bolt-ons for a while after that, then decided to go BT last year. Got 20K on it with the BT (GTX3076) and I blew up again. The first time I blew up on a 3-4 FFS, but this time I was literally cruising in 3rd a half mile from my house...on my way home from opening my new parts from Edgeautosport ...which I was going to install the next day lol.

The blow up happened at about 10:30... And this is what the car looked like at midnight...

And the slice around the block...

And the exit hole for the rod...

The piston (wrist pin was seized btw)

And my favorite, the bucket 'o fun

So at about this time, I was online looking for a motor, and allllmost decided to drive to Chicago (~6hrs) to pick up a used longblock... but then I decided to go a different route.

I pm'd Pablo about a motor and soon after, made the really easy decision to have him build my shortblock.

Soooo the setup when everything is done (hopefully in the not so distant future ) will be:

EDIT: 7/22/12 - Final Build Details

Built Shortblock (Wiseco/Eagle)
Ported head with stock valvetrain
Ported Stock Intake Mani

ACT 6 Puck Sprung w/ Streetlite Flywheel
Precision 6466 CEA with .82 Vband Turbine Housing
CPE Turbo Mani w/ V-band turbo flange
Precision PW46 EWG
Hallman Pro MBC
4" Custom intake

Battery relocate to trunk

RMR Dual Injector Assembly for PI
Split Second injector controller, also for PI
Full, secondary return-style fuel system with 4gal tank

This is the short list of new stuff going on the car lol. Looking to run ~450 again on the street because that's about all I care to do with street tires, but I'll easily have the potential to go 550+, and knowing myself, I probably will sooner than later lol.

So right now I've just been finishing up the fuel system, tearing down the head, cleaning valves, porting intake mani's, and ordering parts. All the parts are pretty much ordered at this point, with the exception of some of the OEM Mazda stuff which I'll grab from my dealer friend right down the street from our shop.

Now I just gotta wait for parts to arrive so I can get this thing back on the road!!!

Some more pics for your viewing pleasure...

Can you tell which one hit the piston???

CLEAN Valves! (Took 3.5 hrs but well worth it!)

And a couple teasers...

So in summary for the tl;dnr crowd...
dougefresh_ and rfinkle2 like this.

Yeah it's starting to show that yes, these motors can "Hold" the power, but for how long...maybe less time than we thought at the 400+hp levels.

I've always been one to try every experiment on Earth with this car and push it to it's absolute limits, so I knew the day would come at some point, apparently that point was now lol.

EDIT: I was at ~450hp/400tq for the last 15k or so and EVERYTHING looked perfect in the motor...except for that one cylinder of course...

And you are planning on DD'ing this thing? Shit's gonna smell bad whenever you fill up the auxiliary fuel tank. Looks badass, though.

Yes I will be DD'ing this. I've thought about the fumes and, well corn just smells so sweeet! haha Really though I'm still considering tweaks to the tank mounting and stuff depending on how bad it gets in the car. All an experiment and worse case scenario I just ditch the 2nd tank and run the secondary injectors off the stock fuel line. No biggie

I'll keep you posted. Parts should all be here by the end of the week, aside from the bottom end, and I'm not sure when that will get finished yet. Pablo said a week + a couple days, so we'll see.

Yeah, I suppose if you just run e85, the smell might be bearable. If it were straight gas, it would be obnoxious.

Yup, this is what I'm seeing. 400+whp is borrowed time on stock block. GL with the build ... not a fan of fuel in the passenger compartment ... but it's your car

OEM. Had 43k on that motor. 20k >400, 10-12k ~450hp. No knock or any other clue this was going to happen...just did while I was cruising.

Quick update...

Things are moving along. Fuel system is set up other than thecontroller, head has been ported and ckeaned, valves finished being cleaned and polished. 99% of parts have arrived. Just waiting on head studs, vvt actuator and...well... the bottom end lol.

Can't wait to get this thing back on the road!

Oh and I'm HOPEFULLY switching to a GTX3582R...

Pablo's magical mystery rods... jk

Eagle rods
Wiseco std bore 9.5:1 pistons
Coated bearings
Arp mains

The head is where I'm a littttle concerned ...
stock polished valves ground to be perfectly equal weight
Stock valvesprings (holding my breath on this one)
Stock cams
Ptp vvt actuator
Ptp custom ARP head studs. (Again holding my breath)

Should all be good though but we'll see!

Man, Pablo's been hookin the whole board up it seems. I may have to see how backed up he is. Hmm...

With that 35R and more RPM, I'd rock some good single valvesprings just for good measure.

This will also allow you to easily toss some cams in (When they've been proven/tested more) down the line to take better advantage of that turbo up top.

JMHO. As for the bearings, WPC > Even Calico for the long haul.

Every moving part that has friction in my new motor will be WPC treated. Great stuff, check it out!

If you have the funds for upgraded valve springs, why not get the extra insurance? You're already going with other "extreme" parts. Another $300-400 maybe?

Honestly it's not a money thing at all. I've heard as much bad as I have good with upgrading springs.
If you can all convince me I won't risk timing chain issues with upgraded springs and 7500 rpm then I'll be uograde, but I heard as many or more arguments saying to stick with the stockers...

You don't need an aggressive spring rate... A mild upgrade would be all you'd need. Supertech has quite a few spring options for us. WIN/WIN

You can get all new valves, guides, locks, seals, AND springs from Supertech for about the same price as just Cosworth Single valvesprings.

Just FYI.

PM @SFWD 1934 he's the wiz with Supertech parts.

SuperTechPerformance.com

You could use the 60 lbs behives.
But as mentioned before.
Keep in mind the chain will be stressed much higher.
The Oscar winning friction washer design on these engines to secure the sprockets for both cams and crank might not like the additional load of the higher springs.
Using a non dual mass flywheel and a more aggressive clutch disc material will shock the valve train more on gear changes.

Having said that I hope you go for it as it'd be interesting to see if it works ok in spite of the crap I just wrote.

Bahahaha I love this post. 100% honest lol

Alright so it looks like I'll be down another week. Pablo has had some issues getting the internals, but I'll survive.

Question for everyone though... So I sold the GTX3076 because I knew I'd be pushing it to the limit and wanted something that spooled a little slower and was capable of making more power.

My initial thought was just go with the GTX3582 but have also thought about getting a PTE 6262 which has been my favorite turbo for a loooong time before the GTX's started coming out.

Which of these would you guys rather see, or is there another one not listed, you'd like to see even more?

The ONLY stipulation is it has to be available with a v-band turbine housing!

You could look into some of the bigger Borg Warner turbos. Their extended tip technorogy sounds badass...and Erich put down 708 with the S366.

Alright, so @SPEED6 KILLAH has had some trouble getting the internals in from the vendor, so it looks like another week until I get the bottom end here.

NBD

In the mean time I've made a couple decisions...
1. Decided on the tubro...which you will all probably tear me apart for, but it will be secret for now...
2. Sticking with the stock valvetrain. After talking with @Erich I feel pretty comfortable with keeping the stock springs in there

One decision that I'm actually looking at right now though is the possibility of switching to Versatuner... I've been tuning with the AP since it first came out for this car, but Versatuner looks like a great interface AND now has the ability to tune for up to 8000rpm and 4.0 load... which I will be needing.

Anyone know if this ability may be coming in an ATR update anytime soon? And what is everyone's overall thought on switching to VersaTuner?

Mine has been out to 8000 and runs daily at 7500. The ECU takes a shit at around 7800, hopefully versatuner has a handle on that. John had the stock components tested and they should be good to something in the 8200-8500 range (don't remember the exact number that he said.)
