Default BNR S3: got a defective unit.

I am trying to determine what I should do. Because the defective BNR S3 might have screwed up a lot of parts on my car, and wasted a bunch of money.

The issue with the S3 was that it shot oil all through my exhaust side and intake side of my car when the shop turned it on. I don't mean like a little oil, It was a gout of oil shooting all through my intercooler and intake manifold. It also may have messed up the upper sensor on my downpipe, the readings from it look way off. After paying the garage to put back in the old turbo and cleaning up as much of stuff as they could, I am out 1200 bucks in labor at the garage. Not to mention when I send off the S3 to BNR to have them redo the seals I will have to pay to have it put back in.

FML.

Any suggestions on how I should clean out this oil? Engine still seems a little rough since the oil rocketing through it.

UPDATE 1: Got rid of the oil inside the pistons using seafoam, this seams to have cleared up the rough idle. The Idle too lean code that was going off I fixed by removing the uper O2 sensor and cleaning with a lint free cloth and compressed air. BNR turbo I sent off to BNR today and will update with what they say. If nothing is wrong with it, I might post the garage that did the install as well as some photos of the shitty job they did putting everything back together.

This is your 9th post and you're instantly blaming BNR for bad turbo on start up?! It's rare for something like this to happen, but not impossible. If you're looking for someone to replace or cover all your fees and replacements parts that's not going to happen and I don't mean to sound like a dick. Don't be a vag and install the turbo yourself it's not that hard, why would you fucking waste over a 1k dollars for someone else to work on your car? It's about a 6-10hr job depending on your mechanical abilities.

Oil rocketing through your engine has now made it rough huh?! Didn't know oil going through your engine was anything bad or something that shouldn't be happening haha!

Agreed! When you start to modify the car more heavily its best to learn to work on it yourself especially when troubles arise such as this. The shop that worked on your car, did they tell you how much experience they have with the speed platform? Maybe you were one of their first customers and they screwed up install and caused this to happen due to improper installation. The turbo itself is probably fine. I'm voting the shop screwed up and they are looking for a copout by blaming the turbo. Installing the turbo is fairly easy as its just a bolt on item. I call up some friends, get some beers and learn to wrench on your car.

When you send the BNR back, he's going to inspect it and say there is nothing wrong with it. Just my guess.

Yeah this is what I was more worried about. The only reason why I went with them is that They listed some MS6 and MS3 cars they worked on. They also said they have done some BNR upgrades and had an AWD Dyno in the shop. So I was like "sweet, I will just pop in my boost controller before I take it to them, and have them install the turbo and dyno tune it." I was really thinking they fucked it up hardcore, and that the turbo may not have anything wrong with it. So I put on an oil line and ran some oil through it, and it kinda poured in and then seeped out both sides of the turbo.

I am thinking I will just have to arrange some time off and enlist a few friends to do it. It wouldn't have been more than 400 bucks if the install went well at the shop. But I am feeling a bit jaded about the shop right now.

Just saying this is expensive, I took it to the garage because I didn't want to run into problems. Not to mention the time frame I needed it. I don't think BNR or the Garage liable for any of the cost, just it is kinda fucked up. I went back and bench tested the turbo, and it is totally leaking everywhere.

I think the thing to learn from this is, if you have a garage install a new turbo for you. ask them to bench test the turbo before they do it.

You should have waited until you had time to install yourself. I trust no one to work on my car but myself and people who own the same platform.

By the sounds of it, it sounds like you need to read more.

I still would not trust a shop because "they said they have worked on speeds before" Pfff they might just mean they did an oil change on one... Should have hit up your local Nator.

Also because they have a dyno, DOES NOT mean they know how to tune your car. I wouldn't trush them with that either. For future reference, after you get things sorted out and do some more reading, you should hit up one of the Tuners on here, and get an Etune.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea, the shop is known for good tunes though. But they wanted 500 bucks to tune the car... So I am thinking I will just have to suck it up and install the BNR myself, and then yeah, asked for a tune some one has and just adjust it. Sadly I have mostly lazy friends, so I will have to do the turbo myself. I think I could do it, but my first time taking out my intake manifold and doing the intake valve cleaning took me 2 days to do it. And that was even with some damn good instructions.

Hes asking how he should clean the oil out now how he can get free labor bryce. Yes people should READ before posting.

My advice is to not pay money for someone to instal your turbo again. But then again its your money so u can do what you want with it bro. And id complain to the shop who did the work not just to bnr. Learn from your mistakes and dont do the same shit again.

And yes having a shit load of oil shot into your intercooler pipping and whatnot is going to make your car run funny.

Didn't know he needed to ask a question on how to clean oil off. It's called grab a fucking rag, simple green and some engine de-greaser and get to fucking scrubbing pretty self explanatory. I guess that might require READING before posting then again, yes? He needs to learn how to re word his post so it makes sense.

Probably should have said I already used shop rags and some ammonia based cleaner... some one just told me to let the rest of it burn off.

Definitely don't let the rest burn off man, that's not a good way to do it, it will take forever to burn off. If you have the time, pull all the piping off use some good de-greaser or simple green let it soak wipe it down, repeat and even rinse with hose to thoroughly clean everything out and blast dry with some air if you can.

Can I clean my upper 02 sensor? I read that this could cause damage, but others seem to have been able to do it.

Also Looking at the downpipe, It looks like there was plenty of oil going down through out the pipe, will it damage the cat to use green clean on it?

Yeah, not going back to that shop. And I really can't complain yet unless when BNR gets the turbo it turns out they were doing something stupid with it and fucked it up. If that happens, or it turns out nothing was wrong with the BNR. The I will have to figure out something in regards to the shop.

The cold side is mostly clean, there was a puddle of oil on top of my pistons that they could see with a scope though....

Ehhh.... that doesn't sound good, it's hard to see a turbo causing a puddle of oil on top of your piston, I understand a lot of oil went through, but holy shit thats insane if it's from the turbo... might wanna check other things as well.

I'm not an S3 expert, so I'm going to ask this with flame suit at the ready:

Does the S3 require an oil restrictor? Is it possible that the shop either omitted said restrictor (if it's even required) or used the wrong oil inlet tubing/pipe (that may have already had a built in restrictor)?

Stock banjo bolt is perfect.

One of the nice things about transitioning from a K04 to the BNR is that you can get rid of the bnoon and go back to the stock bolt for a touch more oil.

Are you sure the oil and coolant weren't mixed up? Or the oil feed or return tightened all the way? I wouldn't tell not to go a shop, if you feel you can't do it or just don't want to that's fine. Don't let these guys tell you anything. I would admit that not all shops do great work, but if you know one that does and trust them, then let them do it. See what bnr has to say, if it was the turbos fault then you shouldn't have to pay. But it sounds odd for it to spit oil like that.

10mm, 12mm, 14mm sockets, extensions, swivels. 6-10hra of time (like mentioned before) and new turbo is in. Pretty simple just time consuming.

A lot of cool ppl post these how ots for folks like you and the best part is it comes with a shit ton of pics!!! Moral of the story is if you feel you can't remember "righty tighty, lefty loosey" then just keep taking it to a shop. Don't let these cars intimidate ya soo much man. They aren't that difficult. How could you forget about those evil 8mm bolts holding in the oil drain line?! Ha

6-10 hours is probably optimistic though, especially if OP would be doing it alone. Took me and a friend about 16 hours to install my beaner, though admittedly we had around 12 beers each and also installed a new intake, boost dial, and map sensor.

OP, your car doesn't want more power. It rejected the BNR S3 the way kidney or heart transplant patients reject the donor organs. Best to send the BNR S3 to me and wash your hands of this whole mess.

I know. Though I figured out an "easier" way to get them back in: duck tape them to a deepwell 8mm socket, put the socket on a 3 inch extension, reach up under and hunt for the hole to thread them in. You won't have to worry about the bolt falling out of the socket, your reach is extended, and once you've got them screwed in a little you can reach up under with the socket wrench to connect to the extension and torque them down. Then just pull on the socket when you're done to rip the duck tape off the bolt.

Yeah I checked that out before I grabbed the turbo, Figured it would be a lot of work outside of what I would be comfortable with. But now I am thinking It would be better to give it a shot, maybe bribe some friends over and make a day of it.

Do it, nothing about it is hard (as in "can't figure out what to do next or how to do it"). Parts of it are just frustrating - mainly, bolts you can feel with your fingertips but can't quite get a socket on. Having a friend help was big for me, when I'd get frustrated he'd take over, and vice versa. Plus drinking alone isn't as much fun.

Yeah some one Posted a workshop manual a while back for the MS6, I have it and I can say they need better schematics... If I manage to do it myself I think I will make some new Schematics.

MS3 guys need to reevaluate the ease of a turbo swap on an MS6. Getting that oil drain line hooked up without being able to access it from the bottom due to the transfer case is a cruel joke.

I found it easiest to drop the downpipe out of the way and approach the bottom of the turbo from the passenger side. Way too much stuff in the way from the battery side. I was going to remove the cowling from the bottom of the windshield like TiGraySpeed6 suggested, but found that I had enough room once the down pipe was out of the way.

It's more of an "approach it from anywhere you can" kind of thing. The only good way to get there is from below, but the speed6 has a bunch of transfer case and drive shaft in the way.

Honestly, the hot setup is to pull the cowling from bottom of the windshield. That opens up damn near a foot of extra space to the firewall and makes life much easier. Dustin did a great how-to for pulling the cowling which is in the, go figure, How-To section.

OP its very important to follow the instructions if you had the shop do it did you at least print out instructions in the how to thread this may of helped. But yeah like others have said I don't trust any shop tuning my speed 3 or working on it unless they understand it but this site has great people and TONS of info on how to do things your self just read. Can't just take anyone's word most shops will prey on people like you all they want is your money. It took about 9 hours for my BNRS3 install but it turned out great.Just take your time you dont want to rush anything

Either way you do it you need an infinate amount of patience for that oil drain haha. especially if you disconnect it from the block.
