Default Frankin-turbo (hx35)

Alright so I figure now is a great time to make this thread.

when I decided to go bt, I orginally wanted to go with the gtx3076 or gtx35 (who knows maybe I will still to it). But for now since I am trying to get a house, I would go for a cheaper route. So I ended up on the HX35w, it is just bearly smaller then a gt35r. The 35r flows 61lbs/min and the HX is 60.80lbs/min (kind of weird I know).

Now on to the important thing, here is a list of what is going with the turbo with prices

Hx35w-$250 shipped
ATP turbine housing with ewg & mazdaspeed flang-$350 shipped with 8% discount
TAIL 38mm wastegate (I already have one from my last car)-they go for about $250 shipped
custom 4" intake-$80 shipped
AEM dry flow air filter 4"x9"- $20 shipped
miscellaneous parts-$30

=$980

The turbo came with an aftermarket wastegate that I can resell for about $100, and I am going to sell my intake and turbo inlet pipe for 210.

I will post pictures of everything as I get it and when it is made/installed

As in all of my threads feel free to post thoughts

Before I polish the turbine inlet

Middle of pnp

All done with pnping

If you do this you will need to get the clamp ring to hold the turbo to the turbine housing, I just happend to have one laying around.

Where the wastegate goes on the turbine housing it looks like I will need to port it to help with boost creap. Their are some big ledges blocking flow the the wastegate.

Really dirty turbo before I clean it and repaint it. This turbo is in really good shap though, zero shaft play in or out, or side to side and the blades on it are all perfect.

after cleaning ready to go in

loop for the coolant lines (didn't need them oil only turbo)

I had to cut the exhaust manifold stud by the EGR, about 3/4 of an inch

the wastegate doesnt fit like this

so i got a 90* and a o2 dump

this is what the tial looks like with a 21.50 psi springs in it (three springs).

Wastegate from the top of the motor

I cut the end of this so that it is flush with the bottom of the car, I didn't get a picture of it though. As you can see in the picture it hung down about a 1/4 of an inch.

Flow chart for 500hp
06Speed6, memin, jracer and 1 others like this.

what'd you end up doing for the oil return line, doesn't look like you needed to use the factory one fabbed up like most others did.

This is the same turbine housing as the ATP GT35 series housing I assume?

I see you have an 8 blade compressor. IIRC, the 7 blade compressors are billet (the 6 blade might be as well) but a little more expensive and harder to find.

This is a journal bearing turbo correct? Looks great. Any vdyno charts yet? I want to see how fast this spools, or slow.

this was the 3076 atp housing, I put it on a lath and took out almost a 1/4 of an inch in material so the blade would fit.

Great job machining out the exhaust housing to fit the larger exhaust wheel on the HX35

I'd been considering this as an option to run a BW S259 myself

big motherfucking turbo on small turbine housing, and stock exhaust manifold?

heloooooo lag.

I'd do 3 things.
1) build the motor
2) upgrade to a t3 flanged manifold with ewg
3) get twinscroll turbine housing

I do like your creativity with it though and that you did the work yourself.

You took out most of the hump on the inlet portion of the turbine housing, were you nervous about piercing into the machined portion where the IWG flapper normally goes?

I wanted to port mine more but I'm nervous about it.

I'm looking to build it soon, I am looking at houses rights now. That kind of why I went the way I did. I will be
going twin scroll and bigger hotside. One thing thay is really hurting spool is I'm still running the htp inlet with the cobb sri I need 3" or bigger.

With the hump I took out enough to make it almost perfectly round. Didnt really make me nervous it still had more material then the thinnest spot on the housing.

Very nice, no doubt the smaller a/r turbine housing helps that guy spool.

I am getting a WMI kit, and a 3 bar map this next week, So we will see where boost goes from there.

Here is a log I have a heat shield that is vibrating thats what all of the noise is coming from, this is a third gear pull and it just spun. I will get some 4th gear pulls tomorrow.

My vd isn't working so when the nator dyno in a couple weeks I will post the dyno sheet

Just out of curiousity, if you dont have a 3bar installed yet, what made you think that a 21psi spring was a good idea?

Not knocking your creativity here, but be smart about it. We dont use gt40r's for a reason, they are too much.

I tried to run a 14psi spring but my factory ebs wasn't working, and I wanted to get the turbo close to its compressor map. Why it is okay is because I live at 4500 ft above sea level, its not going to run the same cfm as it would at lower altitude.

Were you using the gt40 as a reference, because this is close to the gt35. I would run something that big on this car it would be pointless

That makes perfect sense then, as long as you did it for a reason rather than just " i want more power" And no i was not using it as a reference to your turbo, just the fact that its pointless thats all

LOL I know im brown, but I understand things. I like that you tried to question my 21psi move unlike other people who just said "thanks for trying to improve out community". I will though be moving up to 25-26 psi here in the next couple weeks. And the gt40 is over kill on this platfrom.

Anyone wondering I am running 50/50 E85/91 mix right now, and next week I will have my WMI and 3 bar map sensor. ALOT mor logs to come and videos

P.S. one reason I wanted to do the 35 series turbo is that I wanted to run higher boost, so looking at flow charts I decided with this one for my build

Can you explain why a GT40 is too much? honest inquiry.

And thanks @Captain KR for the post.

well, unless you want something like 700whp, a GT40 is going to be way overkill. Very laggy, not a very big powerband.

Just look at the HP ratings for the turbo.

this setup looks promising. just a heads up i would keep an eye on your IDC's especially if you start getting spark blowout.

Sorry if i missed it but how large of a meth nozzle are you planning on running? IMO you're going to need quite a bit of meth to keep your fuel system at a managable level.

this is all assuming that you will still be running that much e85 on top of meth.

^^i believe a large frame turbo like a gt40 would be beneficial if we could rev our motors higher and reliably. tuning up past 7500 is sketchy and is almost non-existant at 8k afaik. Evos do great with large turbos when they rev to 10k and have a huge power band.

I do think the large turbos will make great power but for area under the curve it would be hard to be faster than a slightly smaller unit.

@sleepyspeed6 do you think a internal gate (welded flapper) atp hotside can be machined for a hx35 wheel also? I dont think there would be an issue but since you have done extensive research i'm hoping to get the simple answer.
@superskaterxes can you post a picture of a 3076 hotside for reference

Yes it can be, But the problem IWG with this big of a turbo really suck. I don't know how big the flapper is on the 76 hotside, but you would want it something close to at least a 38mm or you will be fighting boost creep all of the time.

Simple answer, can it be done? Yes.

As for meth, I am going to be running a DO7 or a DO8 nozzle. Two nights ago it dipped into the high 60's, and I hit 100 idc's with the 50/50 mix. So for right now the more meth I can get in there the better

oh ok that I knew I thought there was some actual limitation on the our platform I wasn't aware of. I know SUmark had one on his MS6 a long time ago.
@Captain KR these boys aren't ready yet lol

limitation? yeah. The block.

Do you know the work done to Erich's motor to get the power he has?

SU Mark had one on his car, and it never ran.

Yes, there is a limitation on this platform. Unless you want to slap a GT40R on the stock motor and run it way below it's efficiency range to make 400whp, and lag like a motherfucker.

You need some education on turbos. "Just because you can doesn't mean you should"

BTW: Captain KR ain't gonna pierce 550whp, let alone 700. He's on a ATP housing 3076. He's not going to be pushing any major boundaries. His motor is built the same as mine; pistons, rods, headstuds, headgasket.

Captain KR likes this.

Easy man I know this is MSF but don't get defensive so quick. I'm not out to make anyone look like a fool. And not a Will groupie either. I know who you are and the comment wasn't directed towards you so chill out some. Will and I have been discussing some holset plans for quite some time if you must know. FWIW I do follow your build with much respect. Can we pleez haz mutual friendz status again?

I believe he is planning on using an ewg just wondering if the iwg housing would fit. i am guessing he already has a housing that he can use for the project.

wtf happened here lol

ANYWAYS...... I will not be using a iwg but the housing I have is iwg and I welded the flapper shut then welded a ewg arm on my manifold...... that being said my question was directed towards space contraints of the different atp hotsides. iwg vs ewg i notices that you cut toward the flange but i was making sure you didnt have to enlarge towards the flapper hole..... @sleepyspeed6

HNIC OUT! lol @BobtailedSnail

btw mike doesnt realize how determined i am to hit 500whp (not 550 JERK) on this atp hotside so he can EAD! (eat a dick)

500 is super doable, Will. Ginger Joel hit 465+ with your same turbo, and that was before a lot of AP updates.

I guess the best way to figure it out would be to see which Holset and Garrett share similiar turbine dimensions. But I'm eager to get my hx-30 on my car, just need meth and a FMIC

this is a very interesting build and great alternative to the stock flange turbos that are available right now. the turbo and housing is half the price of a bnrs3 or atp upgrade, and its upgradable! think about it, all you need is the stock exhaust housing (which you should already have) and a custom twin scroll mani to go to the next step. i absolutely love this idea, and i may try this route with a hx30. thanks for the inspiration!
