GTX3071 build

Well after not making any power on the dyno in MO at the STL meet a couple weeks ago, it was generaly decided that my turbo was done putting up with the abuse and is now giving me the cold shoulder. So I'm moving on to a turbo with a little more curves and that can handle a little excitement from time to time.


This past thursday, a box arrived at my back door.



And inside that box was another box...





And inside that box was a little beasty.



The plan is to install this little fella next saturday along with my CNT catless dp and a corksport TMIC that @Nataphen is letting me borrow until I can get a FMIC put on in a few months. Also, if my ported/polished/vtcs delete intake manifold shows up before then, we will be installing that as well.



And as you can see, I will be using a puppeh injection system as it involves less maintenance than @djuosnteisn's kitteh injection (with all the hair balls and everything).

I would also like to go ahead and thank @DingoDave, @16-driver, and @Nataphen for volunteering to help with the install next weekend, and @djuosnteisn for providing his tuning expertise.

gtx win. I've been thinking I'd do the gtx3076r if/when I do BT.

That thing should flow a bit better AND spool quicker!

Yeah I had a hard time deciding between the two but when it came down to it, I decided that I wasn't going for any records and that the quicker spool would be better use to me with the autox/road racing that I want to do.

And I believe it flows 54-56 lbs/min which is about the same as a GT3076. So GT3076 power with GT3071 spool FTW!

Bolt on is the start. I'll add exhaust mani later and I'd like to go twinscroll/vband later if I can get that hotside for the 71. But for now simplicity and keeping cost down is key.

Yeah I bought it used from a member here. I want to run 22-24psi if I can (the lesser until I upgrade map sensors).

With VIP member discount from streetunit, I got it for about 1650. I know you can get cheaper turbos, but I wanted a drop in turbo to minimize downtime on install and to minimize cost of having custom parts made. I will be getting a big MAF intake soon to go with it but for now, the only expense to me is the turbo, bpv (got for 180 shipped) and the CPE 4" TIP. I'll be able to recoupe most of the costs of the supporting mods by selling the ones I have that I won't be using anymore (Cobb SRI/TIP, and the corksport racepipe along with a couple of gutted stock downpipes).

Shouldn't the gtx turbo spool faster than standard? So your gtx3071 should be closer to a GT28 spool wise. A gtx3076 will spool like a gt3071.

No, I believe that the GTX3071 spools like the GT3071 but flows as much air as the step above which is the GT3076. So essentially, it is a 3076 that spools like a 3071...

The main difference is they have a billet compressor wheel. As others have said, I don't think it speeds up spool, but it increases compressor efficiency.

I'm not really sure what it will do but I guess we will find out. I imagine it will be similar in numbers to a gt3076 though with a bit more area under the curve.

From my understanding, you should spool faster then a regular GT3071r, because of the extra blades.

I guess we will see. I'm gonna try and get on a dyno by the end of august/begining of september. There is one an hour from my house that usually gives pretty good deals to the local car club guys. On dyno days they do $30 for 3 pulls. Can't beat that...

Hey Allan I would have posted earlier but I was too jealous. I think you made the right call on turbos. Instaspool equals instant torque which equals instafun. How has the AC been acting? Maybe the KO4 sacrificed itself for the AC unit. Looking forward to seeing the results.

AC acts like it wants to go out from time to time but hasn't yet since I was in Oklahoma on the way back from MO where it went out again but came on after I got gas. It will be good if it can wait till it cools off a little to go out then I can save and have it replaced next spring. lol!

I'm very excited about this and I can't wait to see some results myself!
