Default GTX3071R w/stock flange turbine housing?

Ok, so I've been looking at 3071Rs a *lot* lately, and I heard about the new GTX line from garrett...supposedly they have ultra-gucci compressors that will pwn noobs, pay off your mortgage, cure herpes, etc etc...

I found this on ATP's site:

Garrett GTX3071R Dual Ball Bearing Turbo : atpturbo.com It's a GTX3071R compressor side with NO turbine housing.

I couldn't find a Mazdafail flange standalone turbine housing on their site, only their pre-built kits.

I'm extremely n00b when it comes to turbo construction, so here's my question.

The stock flange turbine housings exist. We know this because many people, including lenny, are sputtering along with one.

The GTX3071R compressor side exists.

Let's just stick them together! Shouldn't it be possible to get JUST the stock flange turbine housing and attach it to a GTX3071R compressor??

1+1=2 right? Or am I just wrong and full of fail??

I'm sure ATP could supply you with a Mazda hot side. The exhaust wheel of a Mazda-specific 3071 is the same size as a regular 3071.

Yeah, you could do that, assuming you could get a housing alone. ATP's customer service blows, so I'd contact Mark or another Garrett vendor and see if they can get through faster, thats what I did a few times and it worked out much better.

Personally, I think thats a heeeeeeeell of a lot of money for a turbo. I mean, I know its a sick turbo, I do. But the gtx3071 is a faster spooling, better top end gt3071, am I right? With the stock sized exhaust housing, spool is quick enough on both the 3071 and 3076. I think someone posted compressor maps of the gtx3071 vs the regular 3076 and the top ends were almost identical.

I'm not saying you should be a jew and go buy a $800 turbo like I did, all I'm saying is I really don't think that it'd be worth the extra money to go for the gtx model. Yes, you're getting quicker spool.. but why? The 3076 with stock exhaust housing spools to FULL boost by just after 3000 (if I remember correctly).. shit, SSinstaller is seeing 25psi by 3500 on a t3 gt35!!!!. You could probably hit full boost on a 3076 sooner if you really loaded it up, but personally I'm not going to use the power then anyways. Even in the few hundred RPMS between, you're going to have some boost (5-10psi) or whatever and you'll be moving just fine. But were splitting hairs now.

Its a sick turbo for sure, but I think you could utilize the extra money elsewhere to help the car progress once you've got the turbo on. You'll be eating tires. You'll need motor mounts. You'll need to tune it. Shit will break - god knows shit will break.

Motor mounts I've got

Yeah I was just spitballing ideas...I want to go BT in the near future when I have more monies, but I haven't decided exactly what I want. I was just tossing around some ideas, and this possibility occurred to me. Worth keeping in mind for the future I suppose.

Werd. Hey I won't hate, I'd love to see someone get one of those turbos. If I had the money I would too.

Yeah that was part of it...kinda wanted to blaze a new(ish) trail for msf...custom made ATP turbo etc etc...maybe create my own fail legend when it all goes horribly wrong

That's exactly what I want to do. I want to call up ATP (or Garrett I guess) and tell them to slap a mazdafail turbine housing on a GTX3071R compressor. Then I'll slap said turbo on my fail motor and watch the fireworks

He said HX as in a Holset turbo. I plan to run a Borg-Warner and there are others with differet ideas as well. Your idea just happens to cost more lol.

The problem I have with the GTX line of turbos is that they're saying they've increased the prussure ratios by a certain percentile. But I'm willing to bet you'd need to run 25+psi to actually make a difference between a GTX and a regular GT series turbo. This isn't like Garrett just came up with this idea though...BW has been doing it for about 5 years now with their ET technology, they just happen to be a JB turbo...

It's definitely a cool idea, and if you're comfortable fronting that kind of money for a turbo then by all means have at it. Either way good luck!

Brian's got a ATP 76 Mazda Specific hotside for sale...... I would make sure its compatible before u go any further

That actually a good deal for anyone, that wants to go BT 3076. Buy a generic one(GT 3076) and switch out hotsides for the mazda specific one if u dont want to go the full custom route

Also: the ATP GT3071R kit for MS3s costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $1900...maybe a couple hundred cheaper if you shop around...the GTX3071R compressor side is $1400, add in 300-400 for the turbine housing...that's $1800...so it doesn't seem to be much different than the ATP GT3071R kit already is...

ATP sells bolt-on Ewg exhaust sides for our cars. So no, he wouldn't need an iwg
