I thought that the thread ended up more or less at the consensus that a 3" intake was kind of a waste if you had no plans for BT?

I agree that it will not hurt to have one, but will the full effects of such a part really show on the stock turbo? I myself happen to be in the camp that says "no it wont". But im hardly any authority on the topic.
I do not know if i will go BT, i would most deffently like to but funds gota be there. So to me the 3" is worth it, it wont hurt and if i ever do go BT i wont need to spend another 200+ on a big intake

I do agree that if you havent bought an intake yet and you can get a 3" for the same price, then why not.

It just seems that an ms3 with a k04 really makes the most of its power through tuning the timing. So trying to flow more air through the stock turbo than you would with a 2.5 inch intake, is just kind of unneeded imo

Well, I just bought the 3 inch and put it in last night. It is a tightfit but it will work. I did widen the holes on the battery box to move to over about 1/4 of an inch but that's the only modification I had to do.

I am sticking with the k04 and ill post some before and after logs while on the same tune, and I think I will over boost by about ~1.5 psi. Ill get back later today or tommorrow and show a before and after.

How ever, it will be a huge improvement over stock tip, and it still have the pcv breather on the tip and not on the intake, which I like.

Well, thanks for bumping this thread.

Because of this, I just cancelled my order through CS and went with HTP for the TIP.

CS has been back ordered for weeks and now they're out of silicone couplers.

Just talked to HTP, I'll have my TIP this week. So far so good.

Yes, tight fit but fits for sure...and I also modified the battery tray holes. I can confirm this was the only modification necessary.

I don't understand how you guys managed to fit it in there just by adjusting the mounting holes.

Gen2 must have more space?

Anyway you can get some pics up of how you did it?

On the topic if benefit for stock turbo, here's my $.02.

Stock intake/tip will still result in significant vacuum under higher air flows. This vacuum plays directly into the operating pressure ratio across the compressor, and makes it that much more difficult for the lil flame thrower to hold boost.

Reduce this vacuum (as a bigger intake/tip will do), and you'll see an improvement in turbo efficiency.

I'd be curious to see if anybody has actually measured the vac present at the tip under wot... Would be pretty simple to do I think.

I bought a HTP 3" TIP, and mated it to a OE K04. I had a CS TIP originally, felt like doing something different, so went with a SURE Sidewinder. Didn't like how loud it made the BPV, so went back to aluminum. Right now I have:

Stock K04 -> HTP 3" -> Random 45 degree silicone coupler -> SURE Aeros MAF housing -> air filter

Ahhh...sounds much better again.

Pictures wouldn't help really. It simply went in place of where my previous 2.5" HTP went. After it was in place, I put the battery box on...holes were off a tad, so I took a drill bit and enlarged the hole so I could line the bolts up for battery box. That's all there was to it.

Definitely worth it...if you haven't already upgraded the TIP, and are planning on it, then there is no reason not to go with a 3"

I'd be curious to see if anybody has actually measured the vac present at the tip under wot... Would be pretty simple to do I think.

Sent from my weiner antenna using Tapa Talk 2
I still have stock tip/air box. I plan on going with a 3" intake when I buy one. Or maybe jbr 3.5. What the best way to measure vac in the tip

For anybody who has aftermarket boost gauge, just hook it up to the nipple that's normally for your EBCS line. It doesn't hurt anything to dump the air coming from your EBCS. Boost gauge will just read vacuum while you're in boost. As boost increases, vacuum in the TIP should increase.

Just installed 3" HTP TIP and treadstone MAF, I had to drill out the battery box holes AND remove the plastic ECU cover. Even then I really had to jam it in there.

Any thoughts on how low it would go. Mine is in HG and I think it only goes down to -30

Just to clarify, I went with the 2.5" TIP. Not the 3".

I don't plan on going BT and having a whale penis intake is an instant red flag for California smog shit if a cop decides he wants to see your motor.

I'm all about going fast while deceiving the authorities.

Who knows... hahaha. Someone should hook up their boost gauge and see

Like bmylez suggested, just use your oem ebcs nipple and vent that line off the ebcs. Then get a go-pro or video camera, and film the vac gauge while doing a 4th gear pull. If possible, try to get rpm and MAF g/s in the shot too, so we can see how the vac increases with airflow

I wouldn't be surprised to see 1 or 2 psi of vac (2-4 inHg) on the stock tip with somewhat significant airflow (275-300 g/s).

Interestingly, my car hasn't smoked since I installed the 3"...
Isn't more vac on the valve cover breather one of Mazda's smoking turbo fixes?

Ok. So I will try to get vacuum readings for a 3" intake. No gopro though, because poor. Will do my best.

Now we need someone to do it with a stock and/or 2.5 inch system.

I will try and do it on the stock intake. I should have time to maybe Sunday if I can get some one to video. Don't have a go pro but gnex video should be good enough. All I have is a boost gauge but I will have the AP monitor GS and have it in the frame as well.

Will also log so I can post that. I do have a full 3" exhaust so I would assume that I would have different results than someone completely stock

@djuosnteisn how will all my gt30 affect vacuum readings compared to k04? Any idea?

Just wondering if these results will be able to be treated as "apples to apples" or not.

Edit: @Deldran I have a full 3" exhaust too, so assuming that my turbo doesnt significantly effect my results, we should be able to directly compare our results I would think.

More airflow the better IMO, gives us more data on the vacuum present at different airflows. Who cares if it's not apples to apples... we just want to see some data at this point. We can get more accurate later on if need be.

Other things that will affect the results will be elevation, temperature, etc etc. So to do real apples to apples, someone would have to do an A-B comparison on the same day with both intakes.

@djuosnteisn so in spirit of keeping everything as scientific as possible, i"m gonna do both the 3" intake and the 2.5" using my car.

What would you suggest scaling the maf by when I step down to the 2.5"? 20%?

Thought I'd let you guys know of my recent experience with HTP.

Ordered a 2.5" TIP from them on Monday 5/14 and received the part today 5/17. Everything was perfect. Great communication on their behalf with timely shipping and instant email invoices and tracking numbers.

The piece is excellent. Pipe finish is perfect and the welds are flawless.

Overall, I couldn't be more pleased. I highly recommend them.

None if the intake is staying the same (e.g. if your only changing the tip). You may see some drift of the fuel trims, but most likely won't require a change in tune unless they're really off (which is fairly unlikely).

Once you swap it out, just do the usual 20-40 mile cruise "break in" period. Then do a maf cal from ~10-100g/s. See if the trims have changed much, and if so... use the higher g/s trims as a best guess for wot. For instance if the LTFT + STFT around 100 g/s is +8% or something, scale the whole maf curve from that point on up by 8%.

I would be swapping out the whole intake, MAF housing and all.

I would like to just swap out the TIP buy I don't have any way to reduce down from a 3" MAF to a 2.5" tip.

Actually, swapping out everything is probably best. Dropping from a 3" to 2.5" diameter intake will be roughly a 30% reduction in area, so if you multiplied the entire maf curve by about 0.7, it should get you in the ball park.

I'd do the 30% maf scale, throw on the 2.5" intake/tip, and do a proper maf cal to make sure things are "wot-safe". Then do the log / video stuff and get the vac measurement. After that, go back to your old map, and throw the 3" intake/tip back on.

Thanks DJ. Will do.

Really looking forward to seeing some real numbers relating to this all of the sudden "hot topic". Will be interesting to see how it effects my turbos ability to move air too.

With the way they hand out gear head status, you'll probably get it for doing this simple test.
