Well I have been around awhile. Some of you might remember the pain that I endured with the MS3 from 07-09. I am not about to re-live that experience, just know it was bad, not covered by Mazda and during the dark days of zero tuning even with the AP.

So after a few years off I decided to get back into the platform. I am coming back over from the Subaru community so I was getting real used to the AWD platforms and wanted to find myself a MS6 in the price range that allowed for modding in the end. I knew that the engines were being pushed in the stock form quite hard. There was proof that tuning owns all so my hopes were high. I found a MS6 out of Ohio for 4,700. Blown engine, some surface rust (that is a whole different thread) and it came with some additional parts. After I brought her home I began the tear down. My intent was to focus mainly on suspension, exterior and some engine mods. The car came with a BNR S1, ACT Streetlite, and some other random parts. After it was all said and done selling off what I could I started with 3,500 into the car.

I sourced an engine from SPEED6 KILLAH and threw it in the car with basic additions. The engine was in the car for close to 800 miles and everything appeared normal enough to do my first datalogs. Going WOT for me is scary due to my previous experiences so I did not take this lightly. I went out and did my first pull, nothing looked crazy, 2.3KR was highest I saw....not horrible, not great. I came back home, loaded up the log and posted it for all to see. The consensus was to go do another pull. I should have done back to back but I wanted to get a good idea of how things looked first. So I went back out, about 700 ft from my place, cruuing at 25mph, in a 25 I felt the engine just die. Definitely heard a few noises and knew it wasn't the boom boom. I pulled over, checked a few things and noticed the timing chain was very loose.

Towed home

After posting online what issues I had I got into contact with SPEED6 KILLAH(Pablo). He has been very helpful from the beginning, through troubleshooting and the build. Once we checked every simple item I ran a compression test which turned up 0's across the board. We all know that this means timing has jumped and that bent valves are likely. So here I was, broken engine and nowhere to turn. Pablo proposed a few ideas and we settled on building the engine from basically the ground up. Two days after the breakdown the engine was on the way to him in NJ for the work.

Pablo has been great throughout the whole process, I admit that I can be one of those "need it now" types and he has been very helpful with this. As of today the engine is complete and will be back on the way to me very soon. I am looking to have this thing back on the road by the evening of the 30th....hopefully sooner.

Sounds like quite the road to get here man. But in the end you are gonna have a Leggy GT and a built MS6 so I think as you say WINNING. I love my 6 but I was really looking for a legacy GT instead when I got it. Just couldn't find one cheap enough with as low miles as the Speed. Anyway, GL with the new engine. Hopefully this 3rd one works out better for you.

Wow man, that's one hell of a mazdaspeed journey. Good luck with the rest of your build and hopefully you get lots of enjoyable miles out of it.

Wow... If this is your third engine i am glad you got the turbo kit, because you definetly need a break.
Sounds like a good combo with the k1/cp pistons. Not sure you planned for it but you will need
A 3 or 3.5 bar MAF sensor!

Really looking forward to tuning this beast Scott. As was mentioned just above, if we're going over ~21psi (and we should eventually) you will want to consider the 3 bar map sensor.

And no amount of seafoam is going to help that, huh? I bet my valves are like that, not fully seating, with my luck.

Well today was awesome and exhausting. I will have pictures tomorrow of the progress that I have made so far. I slept for around 2 hours last night and woke up at 1am to head to NJ from a bit North of Pittsburgh. The drive there wasnt too bad. The rain was a pain because my wifes car needs tires and I managed to hydroplane in 1/8" of water. I arrived around 745 and met a few other members that were there at Sansone to see Pablo. Small world! We loaded the engine into the back of the Civic and I was on my way again. On the way back I stopped twice to take 30 minute naps. The total trip time was 15 hours and 18 minutes, 791 miles. I was driving for close to 12.5 of that time.

Good to meet everyone today. Thanks again Pablo!

More work tomorrow once I sleep.......uughhhhhh!

Helped scott unload the motor as soon as he got home and proceeded to throw about half of his new parts on it. He was obviously very tired, and needed a shower, but i didn't tell him that...
Anyways, on to the big turbo goodness

@SPEED6 KILLAH Doing that Saturday!

@Everyone else, engine is bolted in, suspension on, DP, etc. Still waiting on the FMIC to button this baby up. Doing some work to the valver cover and IM tomorrow so I should be able to get most of the items back in place by the end of the weekend.

Getting closer.

Still some work to do. Firing it up Sunday. Monday I am taking to a shop, replacing the pipes from just right of the BOV all the way to the TB. Also replacing the BOV with a TIAL Q. The BOV will be moved to the left of the hot pipe so it doesnt hit.

Downmented likes this.

Why don't you want GS EBCS? You planning on 25psi like I am, eventually?

Well I guess I will see how it works out as I am committed to it at this point. I have heard mostly positive things about the BOV. Thanks for the heads up though, if something isnt right I will remember your post.

BTW what issues have you been hearing about them?

I like the idea of the GS MBC and the simplicity. Being able to adjust boost without having to go in and mess with the any tables is great. I will be aiming for 25-26psi once the first 1k are complete. I did install a 3 bar MAP, are you going to throw one in now?

Yeah not having a simple twist adjustment sucks. What spring did you end up with? I am starting out with the 11psi spring.

MAF is in there, about 6.5" away from the inlet. So just outside of the OK zone. Here is an updated picture with the TIAL Q. I need to shim it a bit.

The car is doing well, I did pop a P0335 twice. After the first time I checked the sensor, adjusted it and then 75 miles later it popped up again. I am now ordering a new one. Hoping that solves the issue.

The kind words of Pablo are true! It was too bad I already made the purchase and committed to the change first. We will see how it works out.

the Tial does work, but it's not universal fitment out of the box without some testing...

I'm really sad to see this Scott! This was a used turbo correct? Is it just the bearing making noise or is it contacting the housing?

wtf brother. its stuff like this that makes me think about not going built and bt. good luck man and i wonder if the turbo was starved for oil on start up. i know my ol man used to build chevy small blocks back in the day for a hobby and he would use a drill to spin the oil pump to get the pressure up before he started the engine. just wondering if the car had the oil pressure at spec before start up.

it's definitely contacting the compressor cover, axial play is out of the world. all the compressor blades look fine, so i would venture to say the bearings went out, and not a that a foreign object was ingested. will find out more once we pull the turbo off the rest of the way.

We are currently unsure of what happened. I know the turbo was flowing plenty of oil based on the leak that I had from the return on the first test drive. The car was turned over numerous times prior to start up so we know oil was in there prior to it actually firing.

I am throwing this idea out there with a blind guess. Maybe this was the cause of my AFR issues? Blind guess?

Honestly no clue. The turbo spun freely with zero play when it was installed. Might have just taken a dump....manufacturer type defect.

I know it isn't the greatest turbo, but when I swap out my K04, you are more than welcome to it.

Low miles and has seen 18-19 psi only.
