Default jdeves 3071 build

I've been living with a smokey stock turbo for too many months now and after trying all the different "fixes" I could find I decided to give up and just put in a 3071 ;-) So I bought a new turbo from forzda here on the forums, a cxracing front mount, and rmm. Already had a downpipe and cold air. HPFP is on its way...way delayed. I'm running VersaTuner for tuning.

I gave myself this entire week to get it done and boy did I need it. All the tear down went pretty quickly but getting those oil and coolant lines right for the new turbo was a huge PITA.

Everything is hooked up now and I just went for my first test drive. Didn't got on it at all ie no boost the whole time and I'm seeing coolant temps all over the place. The needle on the dash will almost hit the top then drop all the way back down to half. I let the car sit and idle for like 15 minutes and it just sat at half. My temps seem to creep up while I coast. I haven't grabbed a log yet so I'm not sure what the exact temps were but I'll do that in just a minute here. I wondering if there is still air in the coolant? Seem likely?

Looks good. That intercooler is begging to get owned by a bump though. If i were you, I would cut that crash bar and tuck the intercooler up higher, or get a smaller intercooler. Either way, I'm sure you're liking your new set up

Yeah I really do want to do that, but at the same time I am super nervous about cutting apart my car. Also I don't think my piping would fit up properly with the intercooler moved up like 3 or 4 inches.

ok so it was just more air in the coolant. let it idle for forever with the coolant cap off and it burped a bunch and now temps are normal! Yay! Also after everything seemed to be in the clear I floored it up to 16psi. That was sweet

Now I just need my hpfp and a tune... It never ends.

You ARE gonna curb something or run over something with the FMIC sitting that low, and when you do, you're gonna be fucked, new FMIC, drive home gonna be essentially impossible. Do yourself a favor as said and cut the crash bar, or get a top mount intercooler. Running it like that is, frankly, foolish.

Dude...you CANNOT drive your car like that. You're gonna post back on here in prolly 3 days and say "Had to get towed home 'cause I got pwned by a small rock in the road."

I wouldn't floor it anymore on stock HPFP internals. You're flowing a lot more air with that turbo.

Lastly...why did you wrap the stock manifold? The stock heat shield does a superior job and looks better.

Good job on turbo choice, though. You'll like it.

I just had the heat wrap laying around so I figured I might as well make use of it while the manifold was off. I agree that it is fugly, thats why I left the heatshield mount points open, so I could put it back on and cover that shit up!

I definitely know its a no no to be boosting much before my internals come. But come on the install was a success I had to try it at least once!

I'm going to mess with the front mount today and see what I can do to raise it up.

holy wack front mount! save yourself the risk and get a smaller core like the tradstone tr8 i think it is if you position it correctly youll have bats that are just as low running it that way is hella risky and imo looks ghetto rigged. nice setup though! ha btw nice setup with that oil return i had to reuse my stocker for my 3076 setup

That line was the biggest pain ever. AND its freakin leaking oil. I'm not sure what to do about it. I really dont want to take everything out to mess with it but I think I might have to. These are pics of it from beneath the car.

Is 16 psi on a 3071 the same as 16 psi on a K04?

Front mount has been moved. Need a new pipe for the drivers side now. Went pretty smoothly overall though. Here is a crappy pic of the new setup.

Yeah I basically cut out the front and bottom of the crash bar and then drilled the top and used that to bolt up the intercooler.

I did use new gaskets on my line and tightened them way down. I'm fairly certain its actually leaking from the back of the fitting where the 90 degree bend meets the nut that you tighten down. I think I'm going to try to run a bead of RTV silicone sealant around the back of the nut and see if that will seal it up... Kind of ghetto but I can't come up with any other options.

Dude, you can actually overtighten -AN fittings. You want it snug, but not like ZOMG-my-arm-hurts-and-the-fitting-is-making-weird-noises tight. There was a guy who had a couple oil feed leaks because his fittings were too tight.

I doubt I over tightened it with so little room to work I was using a wrench like 6 inches long.

If that's the case, it might not be tight enough, haha.

i used treadstone 10an flange fittings and had to cut the 10an line about 2 inches because it was bending too much and deforming.

I had the same leaking problem, dont overtighten it and make sure you cut the hose so it isnt all bent fucking retarded. I ended up stripping the block threads cause it didn't go in right and had to pay for someone to fix my mistake.

It was only like $300(thought i was fucked for a few weeks), but atleast it's done correctly

It may not be leaking from the threads, but there is a little pin sized hole on the nut that it's leaking from, check it out for yourself.

Well I appear to no longer be leaking oil after RVTing the back of that fitting. I drove around for like 20 miles and my dipstick is looking like its right at the same level. And there isn't a big puddle of oil under my car in my garage! ;-)

Looking good man. You are one of the few people I have seen on here that is actually in MPLS. Definitely the only BT around that I have seen on the forum. Wouldn't mind seeing this thing in person some time. I have thrown around the BT idea a few times and decided its gt(x)3071 if I do.

Thanks! It would be sweet if I was the first BT build in MN. You ever go on the MNMazda forums? I have hardly looked at them but if they do meet ups I think I'm going to check one out.

I actually never planned on going BT but my k04 was blasting smoke out of it at almost every stop light so something had to be done. The gtx would be so so awesome to have but I really wanted to keep the price of my build as low as possible.

So I have a super noob tuning question. My idle is pretty rough after the turbo install and I'd say its pretty clear its from needing to calibrate my maf to the new airflow levels. So my question is whats a good starting point?
Can I just add 5% to the whole range? (from stock) And then go through the standard maf cal process?

so sitting at idle with the engine warmed up it switches back and forth between a higher and lower idle. at the low idle i see maf voltage of about 1.1 with stfts around 8% and at the high idle maf voltage is at 1.25 with stfts at dead 0. so I'm think of maybe added 5% at voltages below 1.2 Seem to make sense?

You should invest in a perm.
You'll be buying peace of mind.

If you are having a bouncing idle like that, you may have other problems like a leak somewhere. I'm thinkin you might have a slight vacuum leak. Do you have an air compressor?

I absolutely want to perm. There is no way I trust myself to do the tuning on this and the prices are amazing compared to going to a local dyno shop.

I fairly certain its normal for it to idle up and down. Its a solid switch from like 700 rpm to 750 it will sit at either one for a bit and switch back. Might be when the fan kicks on or something.

I do still need to check for small leaks though. I don't have an air compressor though. Used a bike pump once in the past ;-)

I was originally idling much higher, a little over 1k, but that was to help with the smoking k04. It was still rough in that range so I figured I'd drop it down to stock levels to see what that did to it. I will follow your advice and move it up to 850. 700 makes me a little nervous, seems like its on the verge of dying sometimes when I drop it into neutral to coast/stop.
