Default New member looking for big turbo build information

Whats up guys! I'm new to mazdas not cars im just wrapping up my first performance oriented build on a 97' GTP too much stuff to list on here but basically jumped the compression up a point built trans stage 2 cam new heads blah blah.

I've tried to do some research on building a big turbo type setup on my 2007 mazda speed 3. I currently have a top mount and I will be switching to a front mount.

I cant seem to find bigger cams for the motor is it necessary since it has a VVT type setup on the intake camshaft? Also at what point horsepower wise are the stock injectors useless?
How much horsepower can the stock throttle body and intake manifold support? Also at what point are the values on the stock maf getting maxed out?

Im not much for tuning so would like to learn all I can especially since my GTP is gonna have to get retuned when I get the bigger injectors for it. Id like to stop having to pay other companies to continue to retune my cars everytime I change somethingm thanks in advance.

Poke around on the forum a bit before asking questions or people will flame the hell out of you.

1. Stock intake manifold flows well enough with some minor port work to 550+
2. Cams aren't needed even in some of the highest power builds as VVT helps a ton and are not marketed. You would need custom grind.
3. The MAF is able to be scaled via a larger MAF housing and tuning. I would suggest a 3" intake on a stock turbo or a 3.5" on a larger turbo.
4. Injectors are not available on the market currently and supply fueling on pump gas to around 400whp give or take. After that you will either need to supply fueling with an aux methanol setup, port fuel rail, or a 5th/6th port fueling setup.

Holy Moly! I had thought about running an extra set of injectors on my GTP that opened with an RPM switch above 5500. Never actually considered it though... That kind of blows I was hoping making big power would be easy with a turbo car but I have never considered until I wrote this how difficult it may actually be.

People can flame if they want I guess. I'm digging around in the forums to find general information but I figured id ask the few specific questions i had at the moment. After all thats what ive always came to forums for was to learn, share, and meet like minded individuals.

Thanks for the help though! I certainly appreciate it.

The block will need to be built as well. I would suggest getting an intake, intercooler, hpfp, accessport, and downpipe and tuning for a 50/50 e85 mix. This car is a blast to drive at around 300-330whp.

How much power are expecting your Speed to make?

How much power does your GTP make?

I guess I shouldve already mentioned that when I bought it came with a catless downpipe a cold air intake a bigger top mount intercooler and a full exhaust from the downpipe. It has some kind of tune but the intercooler was installed shodddoly and occasionally the stock turbo will blow the charge piping off . Ive put so much energy and money into building the GTP that I was tired of fighting it by the time it ran I give up on converting to a big turbo! This is my daily driver and the other car will be registered and have an exhaust welded onto the headers soon so itll be streetable atleast reasonably streetable while im putting this together.
The gtp should run reasonably well in the 1/4 I have front drag radials, I am actually going to try to make this thing faster than the GTP. I would most certainly rebuild the block with forged components it already has 120K on it. I want another project and the GTP ive had enough of. To get more power I have to do a big turbo or a bigger supercharger. Turbo is easier but ive built the car with my dad that refuses to use a turbo for whatever reason. So if I bought a big turbo kit for it id be on my own and it would kill the fun for me. The reason I work on cars is to spend time with my dad and with my son when he feels like watching hes only 2.

I shouldve also probably listed the entire GTP Build just so people know I dont short on stuff. So here it goes.

ZZP built shortblock
Forged Crank, 9.5:1 JE pistons and forged connecting rods, block has been balanced
stock oil pum idling @ 43 PSI
Built trans
3.29 gears, 7/8 chain, hardened input shaft, Higher stall converter somewhere in the 2500 range I believe, some other random upgrades the stock trans is a terd so my dad and I got a built one
Ported supercharger housing
ported intake manifold
stage 3 heads 105# valve springs shimmed to 110#
Stage 2 cam LS7 roller lifters
Stock pushrods and rocker arms
new timing gears and chain
42 lb/hr injectors
upgraded fuel pump
40000 V coils
10.5 MM wires with 1800 degree boots
2.5" liquiid to air intercooler core with 39 gallon/min pump and front mount heat exchanger
3" supercharger pulley
voltage booster
alternator rewire kit
zzp tune need it retuned for the 3.29 gear
strut tower bars
2.5" full exhaust getting ready to get put on from the headers back
EGR Delete
cold air intake

I Know making cars fast AND reliable takes time and money. I'm not willing to sacrifice reasonable reliability just to pick up power. So I definitely am not interested in shortcuts.

Also I cant find any information on the stock trans for the speed3 anywhere I could read up on it?

Sorry to quote this post but LMFAO!

To start-
-Voltage boosters do nothing in gtp's.
-You are outflowing your cai already. You need to go wide sri or just straight filter on the housing
-The stock coils outperform aftermarket
-Shouldn't have messed with the stall
-1' gmr or gtfo
-ported m90's with ported lim are just louder, maybe 1 hp diff

You spent stupid money to have a 13 sec car.
On top of that You shelf tuned it.

Good luck with everything on this forum.

I am expecting to make less because they had time to play with their tune and had a pound of boost or so on me. Ill also be running a full exhaust and im pretty sure they dynoed on open headers. I took my build a little further in terms of upgrades, but I havent taken it to they dyno place to run it and then have it retuned if necessary. I need to have an exhaust welded on first and I dont know how to weld unfortunately.
I want to say that was a swiss cheese car if I remember correctly....

Well, I appreciate the input, but it's going to have a custom tune when I take it to the dyno shop. I dont know anything about tuning, I will also happily post whatever horsepower and 1/4 or 1/8 time the car makes when I get around to it. Even if it does run a 13 which is doubtful. So what? I'll have to change my build around use the stock 8.5:1s and buy a turbo kit and install it by myself. The good news is I have the luxury of doing that.

I'm already aware of the stock coil issue mine dont fire. When I get around to goin g to autozone ill buy some new ones.

How can you put just a straight conical filter on the throttlebody? Where would the IAT go?

Slit the silicone on the filter.

I'm glad you have the luxury.

If you read more you will save more.
That goes for your gtp and the ms3.

Im aware of that. TRUST ME, if it wasnt a project car between myself and my dad I wouldve just bought the big turbo, he was giving me alot of static about ditching the m90 then he wanted to buy a bigger supercharger which wouldve made life even harder. The guy at intense racing told me I could pick up extra horsepower by getting 9.5:1 pistons so when a shortblock came up for sale I snagged it up. Hell, if I had a choice idve stuck the 429 and the c-6 I have sitting around in the car but thats way out of the scope of what im currently capable of.

It could've been, their website doesnt list the weeight reduction they did if any atleast not that I remember. I haven't been on grandprix forums for long or very much at all. I went on there long enough to buy my parts ask questions and figure out problems. How hamks for the help again, and ill look at trying to figure out a way to get the IAT directly in the cone.

Post pictures of your car and engine bay.

Did the car come with an AP?

Did you or the previous owner install Fuel Pump Internals?

No I wish I had an access port. I also wish I knew how to tune. I doubt the fuel pump has been upgraded in any way. I can take pictures of it within the next few days. I havent done any work to it other than putting on a new head when the chain snapped at around 100 K I have the spare head sitting around it has 4 or 6 bent valves

The gtp Should make around 380-400 WHP maybe a little more or less. ZZP made 410 to the wheels and ran an 11.2 1/4 with an almost identical build but with a 2.8 pulley.

I bought the majority of the parts on the grandprixforums.com a few on clubgp Ive asked a few questions on gpforums and got some good help when I ran into some snags but I had a major electrical problem I had to call intense racing for help on.I also tried to part out my stock L67 motor trans and top end but im pretty sure my post got closed due to not having any pictures.

Here are the steps you need to follow to make power on the MS3 safely.

1. Stop for a moment before asking more questions.

2. Read your Welcome PM, and each of the links it contains.

3. DO NOT BUY ANY HARD PARTS YET!!!

4. Figure out if there are any hard parts on your car that aren't stock.

5. Get a Cobb AccessPort or Versatuner.

6. Get HPFP internals

7. Don't worry about upgraded cams. They aren't necessary to make serious power on the MS3/6.

8. There are no upgraded injectors for our DIRECT INJECTED engine. There are auxiliary fueling systems that have been developed to help with increased performance needs. Anything over about 350whp and you'll need to start looking into supplementary fueling.

9. There's not much need for an upgraded throttle body/intake manifold until you're well on your way to 500whp.

10. An upgraded TMIC will do quite well for most people's horsepower/performance goals. If, however, you're drag racing and sitting at idle for a long time, then there's definitely some heat-soak with which to contend.

11. Read a metric fuck-ton before you do anything to your car. There are good things to do which can get you cheap, safe horsepower. There are also expensive things to do that will get you a blown engine.

Check the big turbo build diaries and I guarantee you will have a pretty solid inspiration point in those. You should find there mild builds going up to like 330-350whp and also 700+whp builds. http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/forum/f658/ Enjoy!

I figured I should update you Doodz. I bought a big turbo and a turbo kit for the GTP. I'm already so far into the build I just want to get this one right before I start playing with the grocery acquisition device. Can post pics/vids of the turbo install. If anyone is interested.
