(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score My question is, does the head need to be resurfaced before going on the new block? The car/head has 83k miles on it. The reason I'm asking is because we swapped the shortblocks/new head gasket over and have been having nothing but problems ever since without milling the head. Overheating, air in the cooling system, and now exhaust gases in the cooling system (Surely due to a leaking head gasket) with only 45 miles on the car. ![]() I just wanted to know if this is mandatory/common sense or practice or if my problem lies elsewhere. Thanks in advance, Alpha

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Having a leaking head gasket with only 45 unboosted miles on it definitely makes me think it wasn't square. Damn : (

| Not Ranked : 0 score Seconded. They're aluminum heads, take no chances. You should have the deck checked when you pull the head off this time, too.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Should always be checked, what kind of head gasket / bolts/studs were used? You likely know, but don't run it, if exhaust/air is getting into the coolant, you might/will have coolant in oil or coolant sufficient to hydro your shiny built block. But it isn't respectable. It's mildly terrifying. And that actually makes it quite appealing. - Mazda 3 MPS review, Matthew Jones, Top Gear.
