So to paint the picture for you, a good friend of mine with probably one of the first 07 MS3's to hit the US soil back in 06', fully built his bottom end just over a year ago, and he decided to go with PTP's tubular manifold for the build, using a GT2871R. He got the car built and put together and ended up putting a total of 7k miles on it within the year before parking it. had an issue with an exhuast leak he thought was at one of the V Band fittings at the wastegate. After fighting it for a few days total, we finally got the turbo seperated from the manifold and both parts out of the car. Not only was there a minor exhuast leak at the wastegate flanges, but what we found after only 7k miles was stunning, but thinking on it, not a huge suprise knowing PTP's quality history. Not only a full crack all the way around cyl 1's tube, but around cyl 3's as well. The Bracket supporting the wastegate flange was cracked as well. Sorry, but no where near acceptable from a $700 manifold.

So, my buddy ordered a CP-E complete 3076 kit we are in the process of shoving back in the car. pictures of that to come, but heres the star product of this thread.

If that mani is ancient, I can believe the fail. Most did back in the day, and they learned. Although PTP is banned here for shit pumps/service back in the day, i would make contact to see if warranty applies.

Also, i might suggest that when you make initial contact, you do it with kind words initially. John is a bit temper mental and if you contact him and decide to be an ass, then he will most likely tell you to fuck off. lol

Can't really blame the manifold without seeing the rest of the exhaust. If he cheaped out and had a dp without a decent flex section it could have caused the failure.

If I'm not mistaken John had those manifolds made by ETS. If they were I'm surprised it cracked, their welds are usually very good.

Manifold is less then a year old (Use wise). If I recall, when we initailly got it for the build, it had some noticable fitment issues, so it went back to john to be corrected. Down pipe was a properly modified CS DP with a flex wastegate dump pipe attached. Turbo was also supported. Theres just no call for it.

Never once treated any vender of a failed part like an ass, Ive learned that years ago if you want a positive outcome of the situation. John will be contacted to try and get it fixed. But the nice this is the CP-E kit comes with a new cast manifold with V bands and should be much nicer for this set up. Well, for $6k it should.

Not surprised it cracked bc the Cs DP doesn't have a flex section and I doubt he had a 6" flex in his tp bc nobody makes a tp with a 6" flex for the car. A manifold cracking under these conditions has nothing to do with the welds but everything to do with the downstream exhaust.

IIRC, only long downpipes tend to have flex sections.

There should be a 6" flex section before the cat back exhaust bc we do have a long dp and the manifold is not cast. Those cracks are likely due to fatigue from heat. Either lower grade stainless or improper welding/purging techniques most likely. This is why EMs like the CP-E are nice.

Did he have any way of monitoring EGTs? Can you post a picture of the inside of the runner? If he didn't back purge and then just ground down the sugaring on the backside, that could cause issues like this. Stainless can very sensitive to heat input during welding and can lose it's strength if it is overheated excessively. Same can happen with extremely high EGTs. If the welds become weakened by excessive heat due to EGTs, even small stresses could then crack it.

1) John designed his manifold, only did the first 2 himself, one of which he sent to ETS for them to duplicate. Every other manifold John has sold has been his design fabricated by ETS.
2) John really has no desire to be on MSF at this point. He is happy to work with anybody in the Mazda community that asks, but realized it was in the best interest of his sanity and stress level just to stay away from here. Beyond that, he really doesn't have time. I can guarantee he isn't creating accounts to browse or troll here.
3) As mentioned by somebody else, give him a call and be respectful when talking to him. You are likely to get the same attitude in return and also warranty service on the manifold (if it is still in warranty, don't remember what the warranty is on the manifolds.) I know of one other one that cracked. The weld failed on the support going from a runner to the waste gate runner and then the waste gate runner cracked.
4) TripleJumper should probably go back to SpeedForums where his cocksucking at least got him a moderator position. Oh wait.... never mind.
