Redneck russian engine build

[UPDATE] Waiting for GTX3071R 0.60a/r + Tial full v-band SS 0.63 a/r turbine housing...

Let me share you the story of my motor.

The bad thing is in Russia we have no such a big market of parts. Let me say, we have no market at all. We had to get it from your side. So everything you buy - we must add the shipping quote.
Also excuse the photos - almost every phot was made by the phone.

Okey, at the point of this winter I had almost fully bolted MPS (the MS3 name on our market), excepth for fmic, and my stockish K04 started to smoke a little bit. I was stupid a year ago, and I decided getting PG reworked. Yes, I know. And yes, I know. But as I just said - I was stupid.

I put it on, give it 200 miles to break-in and get into the full boost. Without the tune. Yes, I know The result - bent rods.

Well, the plus is that I was going to force my engine, so I started getting some shit over the sea... Rods, pistons, studs, flywheel....

Then I took the crankshaft to dynamic balancing machine-shop, with new flywheel and old stock pressure plate... Was hard to lift this almost 90lbs...

Measured the walls - they were fine, no ellipse, hone was nice. So we put stock bore pistons. Main and rod bearing were also got new. For the reason of future shit, I decided to took some gauges to monitor AFR and EGT, so took also tubular mani.

As last thing, when had nothing to do and was waiting for the pistons - bypassed TB coolant. And rewelded also extra-O2 sensor stub to make it fit with exhaust manifold. Also rednecked a bit

The oil I decided to use is Mobil1 5w50 PeakLife. No regrets so far.
After 3 weeks we finally started it. From the first time by the way Don't look at the lowering - after it was properly set...

In a mean time fabbed full 3-inch aluminium intake, w/o battery relocation. Only ECU needs to be swapped. Check it, guys

No, I was targeting only 1.2 bar (about 17-18psi). I was also impressed by the result with the rods. No knocking were detected. I floored the pedal at 3K rpm on 4th gear.

About the turbo - I am still thinking what to do. Ideally I would prefer GTX3071 with twinscroll housing, or if I don't find money for the new mani, so I will be getting simple 2871. I need spooling at 3K, and I really need full boost not later then 3.5K. And I don't like to spin it till 7K, I used to switch at around 6K. So I really think 2871/3071 is a way to go.

TRex, yes, it is Ingalls Stiffy ETD. Def FTW thing I started as everybody with SU rear mount, then Hardrace right mount, then I took Ingalls.. Now I put STOCK(!!!) rear and right mounts back. Damper is really enough, and now I don't feel vibes, whic became much worser after BSD removal.

Richie, racecar hahahahah )) Is it this places joke? )) I am a noob here ans my english is poor... I got baby 2 years ago so I started making it more comfortable... When fall comes, I will be making sound and vibe isolation for the whole car body. Will post pictures here. Racecar is cool but when you have small baby - she wants to sleep and it is hard with vibes and exhaust roaring.

If you keep the stock manifold and go with a regular GT series i suggest the 3076r. I am at high altitude and it spools up reasonably well and makes great power. A 2871 still makes decent power but you may end up wanting more. Better to overshoot a bit with the turbocharger because you can always dial down boost but if you start too small with the turbocharger you are kinda stuck. You could always try a turbo blanket to decrease spool time on a 30 series.

I wonder why your engine gave out?

It is depressing that Russia, and by default, Europe have no real market for aftermarket parts, and also no real way of tuning. I've been tossing the idea of possibly moving to Poland down the line, and the idea that I'd be screwed on both fronts with the MS3 (MPS) is sad. Though, swapping out an EU ECU for a US ECU is possible, and seems to pass inspections...so, tuning at least would be a possibility

Thanks for an input. Now I am using tubular manifold with stock turbo flange, so the most "reliable" option is ATP housing... Is it good enough for such a goals? Or better throw this shit out and get T4 twinscroll manifold for GTX series?
Actually, that is still the open question for me - why the rods were bent. Too much of torque for stock rods?
Well, didn't want to ask much, but now I had to make crucial decision - just take ATP-flanged turbo, or to get "right" manifold and downpipe. Second is better, but almost twice the price. That is depressing My wife will kill me after I go that route

zatara, yes, aftermarket parts market is simply absent. Everything we could do - look at you guys and just repeat the things you are making.

Okay, through a lot of readings...

I decided to go that one route:
1) GTX3071 turbo standard trim with 0.6 a/r coldside
2) Hot side - tial housing 0.63 a/r, all flanges are v-band, wastegate is external forsure
3) Steedspeed manifold for this setup, or handmade, whatever option will be cheaper

JacksonMS30 setup made me fall in love, so I believe with proper hot side I will spool very fast

Steedspeed doesn't make a Tial flanged manifold and I'm not sure if he's willing to make a custom one. It would change the design a fair amount. Might want to just get a custom made manifold.

decided to go 0.63 a/r for fastest spool. All flanges are v/band for simplicity and flow.
The turbo is GTX3071 with 0.60 coldside a/r, 58 trim TurboByGarrett.com - Catalog

Downpipe and dumppipe will be welded by ourself when putting it on. Right on the car. Manifold will be the copy of that one, also shall do it ourself - turbogarage13 :: .


Will update this thread when turbo and all housing arrives. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to get to me overseas.

I was blackdragon0731 over there, man my taste in usernames has changed a lot since 2008 lol! I was one of the ones going through the options and pros/cons between the BNR and PG reworked turbo when you were deciding on that, and I'm sure I've seen/interacted with you in several other threads too.

Joining up over here is definitely the BEST option for Mazdaspeed owners. While I don't particularly miss the money I spent on the Mazda, it was really a fun car and really got me into the modding scene.

Top mount... Makes it way easier in the long run. The hard part is having to fab up all the new lines and manifold and shit, but it's still easier

Joel, you missed an important detail: he haz MS3.

Jackis, it is A LOT harder to make a top mount turbo fit on an MS3. The MS6 has a lot more room around the valve cover area. If you are willing to maybe cut into your cowl and heat shield a little bit, you can fit it, but it's very hard to fit. A couple of people have done it, but stock location is easy unless you are planning on fiddling with the turbo a lot.

I know that... If the man is willing to attempt a top mount, he should. If I had the skills to fab up my own shit, I'd definitely be doing top mount.

Thanks all guys for an input. To trim the panel and heatshield is not a big problem. Just have time to think a little bit now, while the turbo is on its way.

I will just put it here and there upon receiving and see, how much of work would it spend for me if I go topmount.
