Default Still learning.....

So I`ve just spent the last 2 hrs reading about what I will be facing when I`m ready to do my own turbo build. Here is what I`m looking for: My power goals are 375-400 whp, Some 1/4 mile fun but mostly street, I would like a ball bearing, twin scroll, ETW turbo. What are my turbo options and is the RR mani and downpipe my only options for mounting said turbo?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of EWG.... I read on ATP's site that the ETW flows better?

Thanks for the help!

That is not true.... If tuned properly, move the power curve up slightly, and TUNE PROPERLY this motor can and will hold 400 WHP. Don't believe the hype... stupidity is abundant; good info is scarce.

That's not to say that I will not have a built block and cosworth head! Eventually!

Turbo suggestions please!!

what do you mean by cosworth head? meaning port jobs?...cuz as far as everyone that is knowledgeable on this forum knows that there are only one set of cams made for this car which are offered by PT-P...otherwise you can get the head ported out and polished but there are no aftermarket componants for our motor as far as valvetrain..that is why i would like to know by what you mean by a "COSWORTH HEAD"

as far as what turbo will get you 375-400 HP...depends on which hotside flange u wanna go with

Stock Flange: ATP "Fail Flange" Turbos - their GT3076R can get you those numbers with a good tuner

T3: lots of T3s will get you this power plus they are cheaper vs ATP fail flange turbos

"I would like a ball bearing, twin scroll, ETW turbo" These are the specs I would like the turbo to have.... What turbo's meet this critiria to make 375-400WHP. I searched turbonetics turbos and garret turbos and have not found the turbo I am looking for. I was hoping the forum members could point me in the right directions.

The cosworth head I am talking about is ported and polished and has oversized valves:

Mazda MZR Cylinder head - Cosworth USA

They also make a few other valve train upgrade products.

best wishes.
going to cost a lot of money.. custom everything.
why would you want the twin scroll if your moving the power/torque higher up anyways?

external wastegates are better for all types of boost control.
they suck cause they are loud as fuck an expensive.

I know it's going to cost a pretty penny but why not spend the money were it counts. Also I want a twin scroll because once the block is built I`ll be moving the power curve back down. This way I don't have to buy two different turbo's to meet my needs.

So this would have to be a custom built turbo? That's going to be a headache

Thanks danems6, know we are getting somewhere!!!

Like I said there is no COSWORTH HEAD for the 2.3L MZR DISI motor....the head that you are looking at is the 2.3L MZR (duratec motor) which is found in most commonly the regular mazda3's..if u have ever taken your valve cover off u can tell the difference easily...one thing our motor has a lobe made for the cam driven high pressure fuel pump...and if you look closely you will see that the cosworth head doesn't have it...i am not trying to sound like a dick...i am trying to give you advice and i wouldn't want you to waste your money on something that isn't going to bolt up...shit if ur gonna waste the money just send it over my ways...lol...there is a thread somewhere around here recently about it...try to search for it...I have both a Mazdaspeed3 and a Mazda3 HB 2.3L I know what i am talking about i can go out to my garage and can just pop the hood and be able to tell the difference

But

I am not saying that COSWORTH can't do a custom job on our motor...it's just that everybody thinks that the duratec head will bolt up to ours...oh and how about a couple thanks for typing all this shit..fingers hurt

2.3L MZR DISI (our motor)

2.3L MZR (ford's duratec motor) found in mazda3 2.3L

i guess shit...i am on a little rant today...tell me why the fuck would you wanna pay 4K on a Cosworth Head (even if it were to bolt up, which it won't) when you are only looking for 375-400HP???...fuck that...forged the bottom end for that much and still have some left over...the stock 2.3L MZR DISI head can flow way past 375-400HP

here is the thread i was talking about the COSWORTH HEAD.... ---> Getting ready for the worst!

only way that the COSWORTH big head will work is if you switch over from Direct Injection to Port Injection...and good luck with that...don't get your hopes too high up

AH YES I AM A TOOL.... Thank you for pointing that out to me about the head. I hope your fingers are going to b ok.

FUCK COSWORTH FOR NOT MAKING THAT CLEAR!!!

I will look into this further to see if the cosworth oversized valves used int the regular 3 head will work with the DISI version then it'`ll be just a matter of having a machine shop work the head. And your not being a dick your being a helpful dick Thanks for the link!

holeinmypocket:

I come from a turbo honda that I had extensive head work done to and it made a very noticable difference in how the engine flowed (is that a word?) air with the turbo. I would have to assume that some extensive head work would greatly improve effeiciancy all around and not make the turbo work so hard. I notice that guys want to just through boost at these motors and are not concerned with effeciency at all. I want to build this motor right even if it costs more money.

But the head is not a concern to me right now ... right now I want to focus on the turbo and build the motor around that.

you will save yourself more money by just taking the motor that you have now and building that...if you can afford the downtime...i blew up last july and still am not running yet...when i am done with the t3 setup and forged motor..i will be near 10K....hence why my username is what it is...if ur only looking for 375-400hp (based on ur no mods in ur signature) if i were you i would build the motor...leave the head how it is...get a bigger turbo...ptp injector seals...some sort of tuning device, mani, full intake w/ inlet pipe...fmic...downpipe...test pipe...meth...motor mounts and upgraded fuel pump...then you will have the supporting mods to go with ur bigger turbo to safely make 375-400hp

you will save yourself more money by just taking the motor that you have now and building that...if you can afford the downtime...i blew up last july and still am not running yet...when i am done with the t3 setup and forged motor..i will be near 10K....hence why my username is what it is...if ur only looking for 375-400hp (based on ur no mods in ur signature) if i were you i would build the motor...leave the head how it is...get a bigger turbo...ptp injector seals...some sort of tuning device, mani, full intake w/ inlet pipe...fmic...downpipe...test pipe...meth...motor mounts and upgraded fuel pump...then you will have the supporting mods to go with ur bigger turbo to safely make 375-400hp
Sorry to hear you blowed the motor... Those hp numbers are my short term goals.... when this car is no longer my DD, I will build the motor to support my 600WHP DRAG car project.

So after much reading and research, the turbo specs I`m looking for is looking to be unrealistic. I will have to stick with some type of T3/T4 setup with ball bearings (this is a must for spooling) and ETW. I`ll just have to buy a different turbo for my future drag car setup. My goal was to buy a turbo that I can use now for my 375-400WHP and later for my 600WHP future project car. Basically I didn't want to by two turbos.

Thanks for the input guys!
