Did coolant bypass today. Took 1 minute lol

Also decided to check my catch cans. The catch can that routes back to the manifold seems to be doing it's job; the catch can routed to the intake is bone dry. Didn't catch a bunch so it has me mildly concerned that the position of at least the intake routed catch can is sitting too high. It seems like the larger the intake, the less sufficient the vacuum gets (could be just me...). I'm thinking there is an accumulation of oil at the lowest part of the pcv hose(s) but this could also be subject to how much blow by there is.

Can anyone add to this?

Indeed the larger intakes see less vacuum. However the intake can should be dry if you don't have blowby and the engine is running well.

So I'm hitting a wall here for the winter I believe. Just did a fancy oil change yesterday....wooo

And this is today FML @Lex;

This thread will be boring till spring now. I'll see if I can find a clear road to take the last logs of the season in freezing temps lol.

Next up will be meth, real dyno, and a 1/4 mile. after that, who knows....

I started this thread for a few reasons, to reflect back on what I've done and learned (and burned my money on), and so everyone else could learn about a mediocre sized BT because that seems to be the most popular turbo(s) for a stock motor (beaner s3, gt2871r, gtx2867). I'm in the same boat as everyone else in that respect so I understand.

I think we are very close to a final tune for this current setup ... take your time with this last set of logs and be safe!

Ok I found a nice (warm-ish) day to do probably my last WOT logs of the season. I did 3x 4th gear WOT logs and entered them into vdyno to see a nice consistency with all of them and numbers did not drop much from smoothing 1 through 6. These are UNCORRECTED numbers.
v1.60 WOT 4th - A.csv
v1.60 WOT 4th - B.csv
v1.60 WOT 4th - C.csv

Final VDyno plot of the season.jpg

It's been a good summer and I'm happy with the numbers I've made (so far...)

@Lex; I think we're good but I'll let you be the judge.

Why are the arf's so lean in the low end?

I'll look at the logs more closely when I get a chance, but we we're trying to improve low end response/spool to build up boost better.

initially boost was hard to produce because of the porting on the IWG I did. 3 full turns tighter of pre load and a lot of wastegate duty (80% give or take which is a lot typically for an IWG and stock motors).

On the plus side, the boost is quite stable.

Did you find leaner afr's to produce better spool?

Not sure if the lean AFR's are directly attributed to helping spool so I'm not sure at this point, it hasnt been an issue thus far, it would be a logical explanation but also increasing wastegate duty would help too...

Thats what my limited knowledge would tell me at least...
@Lex; is the man to talk to on this one really.

I recall discussing such things on a thread before. But it was in regards to richer afrs to promote spool because they would contain more exhaust gas enthalpy. My car seems to do this naturally so i've never really experimented with it. When i got WOT during a log it goes rich during spool, then lean for a split sec post spool then targeted.

Afr doesn't look that bad IMO, 12:1 afr on a DI isn't horrible. I'm sure Lex has his reasons. If the OP is running pump gas and that afr was too lean, he'd experience knock for sure.

Pump gas yes, certainly not my target AFR though.

During spool it is normal to see afrs run a bit leaner than target. However this doesn't last long enough to cause any issues. The biggest thing holding this car back is fuel octane at the moment.

dead thread by now but waiting on the spring for WMI. So during the winter, I've been catching some frothy thick ahit in my catch can that looks kinda like bacon fat and mixed with water it looks like coffee. The hoses on my PCV system is a standard heater hose and not rated for oil/fuel so this is my first guest that the inside of the hose is being eaten away but still not sure. My car is running fine otherwise. Here's some pics of the poop in the can and what I scraped out of one of the hoses. any insight is appreciated.

The oil seems healthy checking the dipstick and looking other the oil fill cap. For those of you that don't know my PCV set up, I have the PERM plate w/dual catch cans. One for under vacuum and one for boost. My boost can and hoses attached are completely dry indicating good motor health. all the shit collects on the vacuum side.

and I also stuck on a heating pad for my catch can to take care of condensation and -40 weather haha.

I have seen the same here in Texas on a buddy's car...2 weeks ago. Stock PCV plate, single non vented catch can. Looked exactly like coffee with cream when it came out.

at first sight some people may think its coolant getting into the oil but I would have smelt that and my compression is fine.

Also remember that with cold temps you will get a lot more condensation and that will change what the stuff coming out of the catch can looks like.

good to know. I'm changing the hoses anyways because we've actually had a chinook roll in this week so it has felt like spring time which lets me work in my driveway It's like Vancouver's winter lol.

Some shitty; s300sx fmw turbo, home made fmic setup, home made 4" Intake, 3.5 blowthrough maf, home made downpipe, poorly self tuned. More motor mounts then necessary.

Gay and coated white enkei rpf1s with stupid 245/45 tires. Pointless drilled and slotted rotors. Clunky coilovers. Ricer lips and lights.

just reading through this thread now and i saw your post and it seems no one really answered you. The answer to your question is No, rich AFR's lead to better spool as turbo's spool time increases with heat. When you have a richer AFR, there is more fuel to burn, therefore longer burn, therefore higher exhaust temperature. Another way to increase spool is to have relatively low ignition values (in the spool range) to allow the combustion to take place at a later time, once again creating more heat in the exhaust gases. The GTX28 really has no issues with spool time. In my case, i purposely slow down the spool up to avoid high torque numbers.

Edit: i thought he was on a GTX, im sure the GT28 spool times are not much slower than the GTX
