(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score A few months ago I put a catless downpipe on my speed6. I knew about the smoking turbo problem so I bought a new oil restrictor bolt. Thankfully, there was no smoking turbo when the install was done. About a month ago, I installed a Magnaflow exhaust and did a mild port on my intake manifold. That held up for a while, but starting a couple weeks ago, I was getting oil spots on my garage floor, so I looked underneath. I thought it could be the transfer case so I changed the fluid and tightened down the filler and drain bolts. I then decided to open the hood. Well, the turbo was covered in oil and apparently it was draining down all over the transmission and transfer case. And, on cold start, it blows smoke. I was eventually planning this, just not this soon. I call Brian this morning and bought a BNRS3. I have a DO meth kit that has been sitting in my garage for a while, and I got a 3Bar from Edge as well. I am debating on tuning though. I was originally going to tune it myself, but I am too lazy and I am worried that I won't get the tuning done. I like the idea of a Perm tune, but I don't know if I want to spend the money. I know there are many that have self tuned with great success. I am also debating buying a gaurdian angel. Wouldn't a good tune negate the need for one? Is it really worth the $200? I am planning on getting the boost dial as that seems to be the easiest and best option for a BNR. Have to see how this install goes. I definitely was not expecting to have to change that turbo this soon. I figured it was good. Oh well. More fun for me!!! |

| Not Ranked : 0 score sounds like the bolt is leaking. do you get a lot of smoke out the exhaust when you get on it? idling? mine will smoke on 5/30 but not on 5/40 the etune just gets you the most "safe" power you can get. I tuned mine for the first year but saw improvements and peace of mind when I got my tune from @atvfreek;

| Not Ranked : 0 score I will chime in here based on my experience. 1. The GA is great insurance. No matter what tune you have, if you blow a WG line off the turbo it will boost as high as it will go and most likely damage the motor. Anytime you modify the boost control system, I recommend putting something in place like the GA. 2. The Boost Dial allows you to keep your 2 port, I can help with the install if you have any issues. 3. The tune is very important in making sure you're both safe, performing well, and have great driveability. You can of course tune yourself but I would start BEFORE going BT. Changing the turbo adds another level of complexity and if you've never tuned before you have to be prepared for the learning curve and a lot of reading. Take it slow and make sure you understand the concepts behind boost, timing, boost control, temperatures, knock etc. Good luck on the build, the S3 is a great turbo and if we can be of help send me a PM.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Ok. That is great. Yeah I thought about the fact that I've never really tuned before. You have me pretty much convinced that I need a tune from you @Lex; I'll see if I've got the funds because I know it would be a really good investment. Stewsrt |

| Not Ranked : 0 score @Lex; is my tuner with my K04 and now my GtX3071R that I am finishing up the install (as I type this with greasy hands). Couldn't be happier! No matter who tunes you it is worth every penny. Why spend over $1000 on a turbo and not a little more for a safe and powerful tune.
