we still have another year or two more in the dark... that is the one thing that they have to do better is ADVERTISE, I mean lots of folks out there don't even know what a mazdaspeed is even after 7 years in production, I bet that if they advertised it better from the beginning this car would've sold a lot more.

I found out about this car when i was car shopping a bit more than a year ago, searching in google... That sucks, the need to create expectations and get people excited even before the release their performance series car.

Lots of rumors circulating here in Irvine. FWD, AWD, Skyactive Turbo, twin turbo diesel, etc.

The prevailing rumor is that Mazda has got the power they want for the MS platform(s). But they want to lower emissions even further to ensure long term compliance over 100K+ miles.

Yes, as I stated before. Having a inside line at mazda helps.

So far I've heard

-TT diesel 6 AWD
-Skyactiv Turbo being ran at laguna (gas)
-Single turbo Diesel 3 (poss. AWD)


This is another rumor aswell. The subbie STI may have a competitor. The Honduh civic type R (if it gets imported) rumors of a 300hp awd platform.

Give something Mazda...

Also, with Mitsu out of the picture, there is room for another AWD player in the 26-34K range. Not a lot of competition for Subaru at the moment...

Moreso considering subbys dropped the HATCH this year, so there definitely is potential... I dunno for you guys but the GOLF R doesnt cut it for me.

There is a video on Youtube of a Mazda "prototype" that was being driven around a race track. The video description didn't explicitly say what model it was, but the video shows the interior and it looked like a production vehicle with regular looking seats. It seemed pretty fast too! Maybe that is the next Mazdaspeed they are testing?

Here you go. Watching the video for the 2nd time, it seems I misunderstood what he referred to as the Mazda "prototype". The driver must have been talking about their race car. Still I think there is something different about that car he was driving. Has a normal looking interior but it seems to run much faster than say the regular Mazda6.

The only thing I believe and which makes sense for the future of MS cars is the 2.5L turbo'd gasser they 100% HAVE to make for the CX9.

Diesel is still a niche market here so they have to offer a gasser option for CX9 and no way no how is it going to be the 2.0L or 2.5L. I find it unlikely they will offer a V6 because then it's just a pilot/highlander wannabe with low 20s mpg and that goes against the Skyactiv mission.

I think you are right. The diesels will have a strong group of small loyalists, but many people will not want to adopt it. A lot of guys looking at STIs wont even consider a speed that is Diesel I bet.

Lets just hope the bean counters don't get in the way. A lot of K04's have been replaced on Mazda's dime, I'm sure - and Mitsu decided to put the NA V6 in their Eclipse, effectively killing it as an alternative for the budget enthusiast vehicle following the awesome yet unreliable AWD turbo models.

Mazda is currently working on the next generation of Sky Activ power plans and Mazda's philosophy, is that they sell what they race...so go figure! Since the MS3 had a long run, I would hope they would go with Mazda 6 Coupe........Would ove the diesel......A Mazda with Torque, no that's an oxymoron!

There is no way they'll do a diesel speed 3 here - no way. As others have said, the diesel segment is niche enough, let alone a performance version (which is always niche).

Mazda will be looking to expand their customer base, not shrink it...

If anything, this will be a Euro-only offering.

All I know is, I have money waiting for the next turbo car Mazda releases...I'm sure we all will get close to knowing what Mazda will do next with the mazdaspeed line up once the new Miata is released (please be another turbo Miata!!!)

Let's look at it this way. As I stated previously, Mazda races what it sells, period! Did the they use the Rotary in their production cars, yes. Did they use a version of the DISI in race car, yes. It stands to reason that Mazda Motorsports is not going to develop and put resources in the Sky Active D motor and not use it. I am fortunate enough to have a long time relationship with Mazda Motorsports and SpeedSource. I know for a fact that they're working on the next generation if Sky Activ powerplants and that they are not going away from the Mazdaspeed Platform!

I have some info for you guys.

Apparently the US market is getting a redeveloped skyactiv D. In order to pass emissions mazda had to take away alot of pep to the vehicle, as stated in the article.

The original rumor was to shoe horn a diesel in a 3, and call it a speed, but thats out/nil for the US as of right now.

Another thing, I don't see AWD coming out anymore. I spoke with my source today and the speed6 was a huge failure in Mazda's eyes. A great idea that was released, but they didn't make enough coin to see a re-release (reasoning for such a small production run). Plus, it didn't gain enough attraction. The 3 wasn't huge either, apparently. We are the heart of the speed group.

My biggest fear is Mazda gets too caught up in $$ selling the new(er) cx-5, 3, and the 6. Just decide to discontinue the speed line all together because it doesn't bring in enough revenue. Sure, they can throw a diesel in a car and not label it a speed of course.

The rotary is a different animal, and that will be the closest to a performance based sports car in the future.

The speeds didn't make much of an impact on the market either apparently. They just swung their dicks to show they are a race team first, car manufacturer second.

In my eyes, Mazda has always been a race team, but they are having a different outlook on this new gen diesel/gas skyactiv engines coming out. MPG and treehuggin comes to mind.

If anything it will be up to the aftermarket world to make it right.

On another note, my source told me that he will keep me updated with info. He has a meeting in September with some big dogs @Mazda. So hopefully we will hear some good new next month.

As far as I know, enthusiast models rarely make money - they exist for brand image and variety IMHO.

Sales for their bread-and-butter Mazda 3 aren't doing as well as they want and it's not for lack of a good product...they need to find a way to convert brand loyalists to get OUT of just leasing another Civic or Corolla and try something different.

The automotive press may rave about everything Mazda, but let's be honest...only enthusiasts read the magazines or care about the reviews. The average 30 something or even aging baby boomers will continue to get what is familiar because, for the most part, it's hard to find a BAD car these days.

From my understanding this just isn't true. I've read several articles on how well they are selling. Also, in July Mazda posted their best sales in 1993!

This is true, we can't keep 3's or 6's or even cx-5's on the lot. Our dealer is located smack dab in the heart of Big 3 territory too.

For this year the 3 and 6 are the highest rated/highest safety economy cars money can get. Any consumer report, C&D, ect. helps big time. This is where I see mazda forgetting about the speed line though. They go where money is made. I don't blame them, they're a business.

I just can't believe the rotary is coming back again. You would think that had less popularity than the speed group.

Plus, you have the average consumer buy the car. Bye Bye apex seals.

Kinda like my CX7 will be when I complete the mods. No manual option in the turbo CX7 was the only downside and difficult to retrofit a manual from another AWD version.

Or they are going balls deep and releasing all of the rumored models in the next three years.

Just put the performance motor whatever it may be in the 3 6 cx5 and miata. And pray to god the minivan.

I hope that obvious turbo noise is a turbo and not some baffle in the intake to make a woosh noise in the cabin.

Still. We have seen a Turbo Miata already, so there is hope of some turbos.
