Corksport's NewOil Catch Can

I finally got around to installing Corksport's new catch can they released a few months back. I figured I would share my experience with this contraption.

The new design of the can looks great, and I thought the built in dip stick was a neat idea. I was a little sceptical of how the hoses were routed with the IM being plugged and using the Intake as vacuum source for the PCV & Valve cover Breather. I ignored any doubts that were building up in my brain and preceded with the installation. Corksport's instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I liked how this catch can bolted directly to the frame utilizing unused factory nuts. Installation took about an hr or so.


After the installation I started my car and drove home. I pulled out my AP and monitored my fuel trims, they were normal. When I got home I let my car idle for a few minutes as I looked at my AP and I noticed that my car was idling incredibly smooth. My car has always had a rough idle, and I have been trying everything in the book to smooth it out. I guess the CS catch can was the fix my car needed.

After a few hundred miles my car started smelling of fuel which means its time to empty. so I emptied my catch can like so... and got this

I am amazed of how much crap was going into my IM. I could not be more satisfied with the results of this catch can. I recommend this to anyone who do not already have a CC.

Most of that most likely formed in the can and not the crankcase. Accumulation is influenced by temperature vs. dew point and by how a particular car is driven. Even just a few short trips of the oil not rising to full operating temperature can cause condensation.

you should put your catch can contents in a different container. This is what happened when a plastic cup was used on a locals catch can

What kind of oil is he running? That's a lot of fuel dillution to make it eat plastic.

This was @Rokusek;s built motor ms3. iirc he was running penzoil platinum or ultra i can never remember which one.

Penzoil Platinum, partial cause of this was the way we routed the can lines. I had been running JBR's vented OCC at this time. However it was not efficient enough for the motor, causing excess moisture into the lines. after returning to a standard closed loop setup this never happened again.

Exactly this, I am in the Midwest and have this same oil can, during the summer I could go thousands of miles with very little accumulation in the can. Now in the winter I have to empty it about once a week due to hot/cold cycle condensation.

If it's really cold make sure to drain it often before the frozen contents can interfere with the PCV system when cold starting.

Thats my main concern with a Catch Can. Its been on average a high of -10 here the last 10 days.
Plus I'm lazy and i work form home and drive my car maybe at the most 300-500 miles a month. Probably less...

Thanks, Ripon is near Modesto. I run Pennzoil ultra. Been sending oil reports to Blackstone, oil holds up fine. I will send what it catches to find out what it is, most likely just condensation. I am going to install a 12volt solenoid on the can instead of a ball valve. I will be able to dump whenever and wherever, with a push of a button.

Why do so many people insist in dumping their catch can where they shouldn't? I just put it in my oil collector and then when I do my oil change, I take the oil to get recycled with the catch can shit inside of it.

Don't worry, its usually in a bottle or my Girlfriend's Tupperware. The main reason for the solenoid is because I am back on the stock intake, and it is too much of a PITA to empty.
Then again a dump to ground would be fun too. But don't worry I'll only pull a Herbie in front any rice and/or Prius.

I drain mine into a water bottle so I can see how much it collected and what it looks like and then dump it into the container of used oil waiting for recycling. I though everyone bumped theirs in with the used oil.

+1 on emptying often when cold. I had mine freeze solid last week and couldn't drive the car because when the contents froze they blocked off the lines. Luckily I noticed immediately when i started it that it wasn't running right and only drove about 300 FT before turning around and parking it.

I remember back when i first started researching OCCs and came across a few threads about ways to heat the catch cans for those in sub-freezing climates. They have engine block heaters, why not OCC heaters?

The market for just an OCC heater is very limited. I can understand making engine block heaters because everyone has an engine. Not everyone is going to have a OCC. Besides, wouldn't an engine block heater keep the bay warm enough to keep OCC lines from freezing?

I personally do not have to worry about occ contents freezing but a simple electric heater could be pretty easy to manufacturer. The only downside would be managing the electrical draw for long periods so to not drain the battery.

I was thinking something along the lines of a small heating pad or if you are from the north heat tape for pipes, that you could flip a switch to allow it to warm up a bit before starting your car on cold days.

Are you running a check valve anywhere?

I basically have a similar set up except my breather is not routed to the can, I put a small filter on it,and I get very little amount of fluid in the occ every 1000 kms almost.

I also live in the northpole so temperatures do go to -40 every once in a while, but I haven't had any issues with the oil freezing in the occ.

The oil shouldn't freeze, it's the condensation and water that will.

I read somewhere on here (link is eluding me) that wrapping the catch can in a coolant line would help thaw it/keep it unfrozen.

My commute is only a few miles. After driving only 1000 miles on fresh oil, I noticed my dipstick was above full. I then drove a 40 mile trip and checked it again and it was well below the full mark... Before this, I was about to pull the trigger on a catch can, but now I believe that all that needs to be done is make a 30 mile trip once a week... I read this same practice is recommended on Mobil1's site too, for normally short trip use.
I'm sure the OCC can benefit by keeping more crap out but I'm not convinced that it's critical, especially if you do long drives regularly and keep the oil clean.

Ha ha, yeah no kidding. It also helps keep the nasty fumes from going directly to the IM causing rough idles. Bottom line is a oil catch can is a must for this platform. If you chose not to run one, you will have a bad time.

True, I haven't checked the valves. I don't have any idle issues YET...
I almost bought the CS OCC a few months ago but changed my mind (if it aint broke don't fix it) but now you guys have me thinking about it again... ha ha... i just dont know how much it actually helps to prevent gunk buildup, I've read that the valves will gunk up either way. Are there any cars that have factory OCCs?

An OCC is very beneficial on any DI engine, even N/A ones, due to the absence of fuel washing over the valve tops. The air vented from the crankcase is laden with oil vapor. Without the OCC, this oily air enters your intake tract and WILL gunk up your intake manifold and valves. It's a slow process, but it will affect performance over time.

Just get an OCC, because racecar.

Has the quality of the hoses improved? That's the only gripe I hear about. curious about the vta on the jbr setup. i was really kinda looking forward to maybe doing hat setup. what problems did you have?

The include reinforced silicone hoses now. We made a change a ways back on the type of hose supplied with the kit

Yeah the new hoses are fine. The only problem I have is that my TIP has a lot of oil in it from the OCC connection to the inlet of the turbo. Now I am wondering if I should try to stuff some steel wool into the can to see if it will catch more oil. Mostly I just get loads of water (condensation) out of the can and not much else.
